My first 2 pots after learning the pottery wheel and clay forming techniques!

Was looking for a place to learn some of the basics of pottery and came across this place that has very affordable private classes. The instructor, Maite, was extremely friendly and accommodating to any skill level. I took my sister and we both learned so much from a fantastic Demo from Maite on working the pottery wheel, centering the clay and finally getting creative with our designs and shapes. We each created 2 different pots, and had time to paint and use a variety of stamps to really customize our work to our liking. Maite did an incredible job of helping guide us through the process, explaining the fundamentals, while really giving us the freedom to make mistakes and learn. I couldn't recommend this place enough for anyone looking to learn any stage of pottery making (wheel work & sculpting included). I'll be coming back with more family and friends, and really dive deeper into the 5 week course that helps give more insight into techniques and exposure to working with the kiln. Also, there's a ton of just beautiful pots and sculptures for sale that make it worth peeking into the shop.

Highly recommend this studio! It has a great environment for anyone--from those just starting out to those with years of experience. I did a workshop and Maite had everything planned out perfectly. I have zero pottery experience but that didn't matter--the instructor was incredible and everyone was super helpful. I learned a ton and had a great time. Will be back soon!

Highly recommend. My best friend and I took a class about a month ago. Pros: it's an appropriately priced class that provides you with a unique creative experience guided by the very knowledgeable and kind teacher, Maite. The studio is quite small but functions perfectly well as is. The private class worked great as a gift, and we love what we created! Cons: Hours are very limited, and location was a little out of the way for me, making pick-up a little bit difficult (but Maite was very flexible, which I greatly appreciated). Also I think we could've used and extra 10 minutes or so. Nonetheless, I would totally go again!

I took my 9 year old and her best friend to Gumbo Limbo last night. She's been begging to try her hand at a pottery wheel. I couldn't say enough about how amazing Maite was with the girls. She was patient, informative, professional and kind. She made their first experience great.

My boyfriend and I randomly stumbled upon Gumbo Limbo Pottery about a month ago when we had breakfast at the Chuck Wagon next door and noticed the sign. We were both interested in trying our hand at the pottery wheel so a few days ago, I looked it up on Yelp but there was no listing so I added it myself. Luckily a quick Google search led me to their website where I signed us up for a couples clay date. The registration process was quick and simple. We arrived a few minutes early for our clay date and had a chance to look around at all of the cool pottery designs in the storefront. When it was our turn at the wheel, the owner, Maite, introduced herself and got us set up with aprons. She then sat down at one of the pottery wheels and walked us through a demonstration of what we would be doing. It was awesome to see her manipulate the clay in a variety of ways by simply shifting the pressure in her hands. When she finished going through each of the steps, we each sat at our own wheel and she handed us a ball of clay to work with. The first round was definitely the trickiest, which of course is to be expected when trying something new. Maite was extremely helpful and patient with us as we stumbled through the steps. We tried it a total of four times and opted to use slightly larger pieces of clay each time, which made it more challenging but I was able to get the hang of it a bit better with each round. After we were done with the wheel, Maite set us up to decorate our creations. She had a wide assortment of colors, stamps, and accessories to choose from. We decorated our pieces and labeled each one for pick up, which we were told would be after they are put through the kiln. It takes approximately 10 days for the finished product to be ready for pick up. Overall this was an awesome date night experience. We had a great time and enjoyed learning something new and creating something together. It was harder than it looks but a lot of fun to do. I can't wait to see what our final products will look like and definitely plan to try it again sometime soon.

Maites studio is an artisan nook in the Miami area-- a hidden gem! I highly recommend for a private birthday party or date night experience. Her prices are very reasonable and the class is well worth it. I had my birthday party here and it was great fun! Maite was patient as most of us were experiencing spinning pottery for the first time. Everyone had an unforgettable time! I am looking forward to picking up the pieces that went into the fire for us to keep and remember. Best, J

Six weeks later, I can finally write this review…read more Woohoo! For those not aware, my latest endeavor was signing up for a six-week pottery course with one of my best friends who also happens to be my work husband. What motivated this endeavor? I am a bored and crazy soul. That, and admittedly, this was on my bucket list for years. You see, my mother used to do ceramics and she would never stop talking about how I needed to try it as well. Turns out that while my mother had talent for pottery, I am abysmal at it. The only real competition I have is my dear friend. We cannot seem to decide whose pottery is worse. Semantics aside, the Ceramic League of Miami can be located in the village of Pinecrest. It essentially is an open-spaced garage full of pottery wheels, bookshelves, and clay galore. They have an area for parking, and on the off chance it's packed, there's plenty of businesses around where you can park. Everything in this area is pretty relaxed. Classes can either be daytime or nighttime Monday through Saturday. We signed up for the 2:30 PM Saturday class for the pottery wheel and soda kiln with James. The signing up process was relatively simple. We did everything online. When we began the class, we were given the option of purchasing a tool set. You needed to bring exact change for this. $14 to be specific. If you didn't get this for whatever reason (usually the school running out of them), you could share with the instructor and/or other students. This is what ended up happening to me. This six-week pottery course cost $155 and it included two and a half hours of instruction every Saturday, as well as what I refer to as that horribly heavy 20+ lb of clay bag. The class is over and I have leftover clay. What the heck am I supposed to do with it? I have clay in places I never thought I would. Cough; I am referencing my box of art supplies in my car. Yes, I can effectively now say I've become an artist. If you become a member of this non-profit organization, the class will cost you $145 instead. Overall, I thought the prices fair for what we did. We received a lot of personal instruction and got to get our hands down and dirty. Unfortunately the movie Ghost sets up unrealistic expectations when it comes to clay. Noting that, if you go in with an open mind, this is a blast; a frustrating blast but a blast nevertheless. I found James to be an efficient and kind instructor. I just wish there had been more organization on his part. We never really got to mark our pieces properly, but oh well. I would probably do this again in the future. For now though, this girl is off to her next venture: aerial yoga!

I'm sad they took away the canvas painting options as that was the reason we drove 30 min just to come to this specific location. My fault as I should have called first to double check if they still offered the canvas painting. This is the only location I knew of that did that. Oh well. There is a huge selection of pottery pieces to choose from. Prices vary pending on your selection. Came here with my daughter and she selected the cute little tea set. I almost had a heart attack when I saw the price at $54! But this is what she wanted so I cannot deny her happiness. Haha. I mean I can but I didn't know want to. It took me a while to find what I wanted to paint that was practical. We have so many pottery pieces the kids make that are just for decoration. Love when we make plates, mugs, bowls or any kitchen pieces as they are most practical. I chose the geometric vase! The vase was $37. There is also an additional $8/per person studio fee to use everything (brushes, paint, materials). This stuff can add up quickly. Our total was $117! Ouch. But fun and you can't put a price on fun experiences. Lol. Once you pick your piece, the staff will bring you a bowl of water and a paint palette. All brushes located at the tables. The you select the colors you want and put onto your palette and bring back to the table to start painting. We took our time and was here for 2 hours. But our pieces were meticulous. Ha. They also offer coffee here which is a nice bonus. Once you're done painting your piece, you can use the blow dryer to dry the paint, this prevents smearing. Give the finished pieces to the staff and they will label it for the final touch of glazing and thus completing the process. It takes about 7 days and they will call you when it's done so you can come back and pick up the finished product. Can't wait to see ours!
