There's something about trying a new takeout spot that can feel intimidating. Not all takeout is the same, and Gum Hoi stood out. I ordered Sunday dinner for the family, and since I had never tried it before, I decided to order in person. It's located on the end of the strip mall with lots of parking. I placed my order for boneless spare ribs combination with pork fried rice, a large order of sesame chicken with white rice, General Tso's chicken combination with chicken fried rice, and a large order of tostones. The total came to $46, and the wait was about 15 minutes. When my food was ready, I was asked what sauces I wanted. I said, "Give me all of them," and they delivered. The bag was so hot I could feel the warmth on the ride home. Once served, it was a feast! The star of the show was the rice fried and white. My mother enjoyed the white rice and her sesame chicken, while Jo savored her boneless spare ribs and rice--perfectly cooked and not overly sauced. I asked for extra spice in my General Tso's chicken, and they nailed it. The chicken was well-done, and the extra chili sauce I requested was clearly visible in the dish. I was sold. The egg roll was delicious on its own, and even better as the last bite with a dab of duck sauce. We all commented on how good the rice was--the veggies tasted fresh, and nothing lacked flavor. The tostones were lightly salted, which is rare, and this alone elevated the meal to another level. It was takeout so good that I can't wait for the leftovers--and yes, there were definitely leftovers. This is a 5/5 star takeout experience you need to try. I found this take-out spot while visiting my parents. I grew up out here, and since I moved to CA it's been extremely hard to find the Chinese food that I used to have in NY. I crave east coast style Chinese food. Especially the take-out which should be hot, fresh, full of flavor, made to order, and reasonably priced. (That is very different than what I find in SoCal.) Gum Hoi has become my go-to place when picking up or ordering delivery Chinese food when I go to my parents house for the last 2 years. We have had a number of items through the years, but these are some of our "go-to" items. Egg Roll - thick crispy skin. I've watched my brothers enjoy it warm or cold straight from the fridge Dim Sum - kind of like an Asian meatball shumai Boneless Spare Ribs - I love boneless spare ribs with its char siu flavor these little barbecued or roasted pork bits are so delicious. Surprisingly hard to find in Southern California. Wonton Soup - I love wonton soup. Another hard to find item on the west coast, at least with the same preparation. Just a wonton filled with a meat filling with broth and some pork strips. Simple and oh so delicious. Pork Fried Rice - good. On its own, it could have a little more flavor for the rice but as a base to all the other delicious flavors it does its job well while adding some veggie bits and pork deliciousness. Beef Lo Mein - also such a simple yet delicious dish that I crave and cannot find on the west coast easily. Beef w. Broccoli - has a good flavor and I love taking the excess sauce and adding it to rice and noodles to add flavor. Gum Hoi Special Roast Pork - this is described as "Chinese barbecued tenderloin pork, prepared from our chef's own recipe, served w. mixed Chinese veg., young corn, snow pea pods" on their menu. My brother almost melted in his seat when he tried it reminiscing of when he was younger and eating with older family members. Sauce was also a good extra to add to the rice and noodles. General Tso's Chicken - "Crispy golden tender chicken morsels" as per the menu with a one pepper spiciness level. The chicken did remain crispy even with the sauce glazed on it. Even on day 2 of leftovers, so that is a real accomplishment. The flavor is good and to me not very spicy at all. I did see a couple of the peppers in the dish, and avoiding eating those, but I would say don't be afraid if you don't like too spicy as this dish isn't very spicy (just avoid that pepper) read more

Worst Chinese food in North Rockland. Go literally anywhere else and the food will taste better. The pork fried rice is bland, the lo mein somehow tasted old. The egg rolls have a strange aftertaste. The boneless ribs have a strange chemical taste. Tung Fung, China King or Ocean Empire are all better choices. read more

Just had to bring back my daughters Boneless Spare Rib Combo, the Pork Fried Rice was DRY, and the Boneless Spare Ribs were dry and uneatable. Went back to get payment back, they offered a new combo plate, i asked why would I take the same product, it is the same food, the woman just stared at me, I asked for a refund on my CC, and I needed to send my daughter back with the Business card she used to get the food. This place is one of the last places in the area for Chinese Food, and it does not seem to be all that good lately. One of the better Chinese food spots in the area. It's a little on the pricey side. More expensive that's you'd expect for fast food Chinese food. Whenever my PIC (Partner In Crime) and I eat here, it's in a rush, we are 2 hangry redheads and it's at the time of day between ... should I wait for dinner & DINE or mad eat and DASH to be happy as we drive back to NJ. PIC gets chicken lo mein, chicken with cashew or chicken with string beans, She can't eat seafood or mushrooms, so if you have food allergies like she does, you know the fear of cross contamination, so far the crew here understand the fear and they have always been accommodating. Very sad to say that after anxiously awaiting to go there I was totally disappointed. The ribs were dry, tasteless and had a lot of small pieces. The chicken lo mein has no taste and soggy. This is the only Chinese place I want to order from again since we moved to the area 4 months ago. Everything is flavorful and light, the vegetables are delicious, and there's nothing heavy about their use of oil or sauces. Really one of the best places we've tried, and not just in Rockland County. Prices are reasonable and make it easy for us to try new things, too. Definitely the best Chinese food in North Rockland! I'm a definite Chinese food snob. I always order the same thing - sweet and sour chicken with pork fried rice. That's the ultimate judge of Chinese food in my opinion. The chicken needs to have a crispy breading without being overcooked and toast-like. The sauce can't be too sweet or too thick. And the pieces of pork in the rice need to be big enough that you can actually taste them. Gum hoi checks all these boxes and serves me the best sweet and sour chicken that I've had in this area. My boyfriend and I are definitely regulars here and this is now our go-to spot. Top picks: Sweet and sour chicken (obviously), BBQ spare ribs, and Sesame Chicken. They have, by far, top 5 sesame chicken that I've ever had. Ask for white meat only - there's no extra charge and it's beyond delicious. Can't speak to the delivery services because we always pick up. But we've never had a problem ordering on the phone and they've never messed up our order. Definitely delicious food and great service. I didn't learn my lesson the first 3 times I asked for delivery so I tried a 4th time. Sure enough l, on a Wednesday night they tell me 40 mins for delivery. Ok.
