Came in a few weeks ago with my son who wanted to get a guitar to learn to play with. Staff was all friendly and helpful, and prices were pretty decent. But WOW is it cramped in here! They don't have a huge selection at all, but you can barely walk around and you feel like you are in constant danger of tripping over something. Basic accessories like cables have a poor selection. Will it get better? Towards the end of 2025, the whole guitar/bass/amp section shifted. It feels less cluttered and somewhat more organized...however, it is very difficult to find a cable that's more than a foot long or permanently affixed to something preventing you from playing comfortably. Half of the actual playing space is consumed with gear to the point where 95% of people playing have to move to allow people to browse. It's like they make it difficult to play in-store on purpose. Not to mention, the gear on the ground is beat up from years of being in the exact spot - still sold for full price. Knicks, scuffs everywhere, knobs falling off, actual pieces missing from the gear, etc - go online to their store page - "great condition" - maybe during intake 2 years ago. Pedals are neatly fashioned to a board for a nice display with all of them powered - just can't actually use any of them? Kind of pointless to have them powered then right? Was playing an electric in the used section and enjoyed it, took it up to the front to take it home with me and was denied. Someone had bought it online a few hours before and it hadn't been removed from the floor yet. Wasn't too upset as I'm sure it happens, but why put online models on the floor anyway?? Acoustic section is the cream of the crop of online used section catfishing. Was browsing the website for a particular model and found the exact one in Charleston's inventory, great condition, decent price - I was genuinely shocked as this never happens due to the size of the store and their limited inventory. Got to the store and went straight for the guitar, just to realize - the entire thing was borderline unplayable. Action through the roof high, finish separation cracks from humidity (A Charleston given I suppose) and rusty strings that barely carried a note. Immediately put it back. While I was there I began to notice a common trend...a lot of the acoustics in this section were the same way. I tried roughly 12-15 different models. All rusty strings, all out of tune. Wasn't too surprised as many hands probably play these everyday, but the action on at least 10 of them were either unplayable or uncomfortable. For an acoustic...that's a big issue. This wasn't just some cheap brand from the 80's, this was the highest of high end Martin's and Taylors (still priced 2K+ btw). The only decent playing model there, was their J-45 and Hummingbird's hanging behind a padlock. Don't even get me started on the multiple physically broken classicals that were hanging for months... If you've been to this store, it's pretty easy to see this is a try it before you buy it store - and by "buy", I mean buy it elsewhere or online and have it shipped. Every GC I've been to outside of CHS feel premium and an experience. This feels like GC slapped their logo on a pawn shop back in the early 2000's. I have a personal rule for this place, small gear like strings and picks sure, absolutely nothing off the wall unless it's dirty cheap. No rules for the gear typically results in mismanagement of the gear. Kids playing multi grand instruments and leaving them on the ground, people relying on amp tuners and popping strings right and left, guitars and basses literally stacked on top of each other in a gear rack in the corner, etc., etc. Then there's the in-store performers. Not really joking either. Multiple trips, I've noticed the same people perform for everyone in the store at incredibly loud volumes. If it happened once or twice, no biggie; however, they are known to come in and do this pretty much every weekend. Typically, everyone trying to play at this moment gets up and leaves. Even went late one evening and one of them was shooting a music video with an iPhone while everyone else could barely hear at the checkout counter. It seems like it bothers the employees just a much as the customers, but yet, it continues. I have hopes for this store, considering it is one of the only places to try gear in CHS. Maybe with GC's new CEO, things will change, however, the in-store experience at CHS is just not what it needs to be. Especially compared to other GC's across the country. read more

While we recognize that this is the one of the only "guitar and musical instruments" shops in the Charleston County, we were disappointed that not one of the employees stopped to ask, "May I help you?" We made a dedicated, long drive just to visit the store and make a large purchase, but left after it became obvious that this was not how the staff operated. I'm from Louisiana so when i travel i like to get a nice practice bass amp and. i bought a p bass a few weeks back from this store. and lemme tell you, the manager joe is one solid cat. This is not about him at all as a matter of fact he is the only reason id go back. So I walk in and say im gonna play a bass amp a little loud to make sure i like the tone.i bought my 5k warwick from louisiana to try it out... that's how much i need to hear the tone... im jamming and people are saying how awesome it sounds when a long-haired 22-year-old with tits comes and tells me he cant hear the phones, im too loud and turns me down.If you can't handle sound brah you in the wrong spot..... Now,.... i'm there to spend money. i don't know what people on the phone are doing, that's why im there though. im in a music store where real musicians wanna hear equipment they will invest money in. so if you work in a music store id imagine the last thing you wanna do is tell someone to turn it down..... it wasn't even loud. if i do go back, i just wanna deal with Joe, the manager He's an actual musician and he would understand where I'm coming from. Let me start by saying, I have not purchased anything from this location but have been in quite few GC stores in various places in America. I've now been twice, the first visit was dissapointing, the store was poorly stocked, poorly laid out, and understaffed. I left because they didn't have what I was looking for in stock. That was towards the end of Covid though so I didn't really think much of it. Now I recently went back in search of a couple of different accoustic guitars, one of which I was planning to purchase. This is my take. The store is neglected, it's genuinely dirty. There is crap everywhere. The selection is embarrassing for a G.C. location. I've never seen such a poorly stocked store. They have $3k dollar guitars of floor stands, and $900 ones hanging on the highest racks with locks on them. I found multiple damaged guitars hanging at full price in the accoustic room. Overall, unless you know they have exactly what youre looking for, skip this place. Its a sad reminder of what retail in America looks like now, with a staff that clearly doesnt care about what they do. read more

The staff is poorly trained in customer service. Not once has any employees ever approached me too see if I need any assistance. The only good person working there is the guitar tech. I started ordering on line because I don't want to go back in to the store and deal with there arrogance. They are lucky I gave the store one star. Then found out that they still charged me and nothing was transferred and on top of that got charged for the next 4 classes eventhough I went to only one of them. Went here on July 28, 2022. Terrible layout first of all. I find a guitar and start demoing it only to have an employee tap me on the shoulder and tell me to turn my volume down so that they could hear their phones. This was not a problem at all EXCEPT the following: 1) my volume was at 2 and nothing else was past 5 (if even). 2) there was a group of 4 grown gentlemen hitting basses at a volume so loud I couldn't even hear what I was playing through my own head, let alone through the amplifier I was using at the time. 3) Half of the group just so happened to be black (I'm white) and the aforementioned shoulder-tapping employee who had an afro did not tell them to turn their volume down at all. As a matter of fact, they kept plucking and hitting away AFTER I was told to turn my stuff down. All I felt I could do was unplug the cable, leave the amp on, put the guitar back where I found it (or close to that vicinity), and storm out because I knew I was targeted. The lessons guy looked at me like I had 8 heads when I told him what happened. I sent a complaint to GC's website and was told via email that I would get a response in no more than 24 hours. It has been crickets from all but 2 people, and they've been quiet. I even called the other number given to me in that email and was told nothing and not to worry. It's too late for that now as you have lost me as a customer for life. I've been a customer with you guys since I started playing 8 1/2 years ago and I never thought I'd be typing a review like this to a company I thought I could trust. Good job. Repent! I was willing until I saw at the end where she goes by "they/them" "pronouns." This is just another straw to break the camel's back. Drove 20 minutes to get here to look at some electric drum sets. The store is a mess and poorly laid out. Most of the kits, drums, etc either had no price listed or the wrong label on them. There was garbage on the floor, like a half-consumed bottle of soda next to one of the drum sets. Boxes lying around everywhere, hard to tell if it was stuff for sale or incoming shipments. No one greeted me when I came in, or asked if I needed help. Go elsewhere, this place is a mess. read more

I needed some new strings so I went to Guitar Center to get some. While I was there I checked out some of the merchandise they had; and it was a nice selection. The store was dead when I was there and this was the Saturday after Thanksgiving. I didn't really see any great sales happening in there, but there were like only 2 other customers. read more

I walked into the Guitar Center today. It was the first time I have ever been into one. I picked up a guitar last week and have had one " Youtube lesson", so I was afraid that they would treat me like some kind of "poser-idiot". What a nice suprise I got while shopoing for an acoustic guitar. A guy named Derek came in to the acoustic room and offered to help me and my hubby pick out something better than the second-hand model I had been practicing on for the past week. He must have spent a good 40 minutes of his valuable time showing me every model that we might be interested in. He was nice, very encouraging, and even gave me the business card of someone local that gives guitar lesons. I am so grateful that they gave me their time, advice, and excellent customer service! Before I get to this, I went to the N.Charleston Store on Feb 20th. The store had damaged stock on the racks (multiple Guitars, I took pics) and the store was very cluttered, not a clean environment. (I have been to other Guitar Centers, this is not how they should be) Here is the actual problem--BAIT and SWITCH is ILLEGAL--...I purchased a VOX Limited-Edition AC10C1 10W 1x10 Creamback Combo Guitar Amp Tan on Tan on Feb 20, 2024. I received an email directly stating: "Thank you for your recent order. We wanted to let you know that your gear is not available at our warehouse, but we have it in stock here at Guitar Center 774-LAKELAND. We can ship your order from here, with no further action required from you." It continued, "However, the item does not have its original packaging, but it is brand new and the full manufacturer's warranty applies. You have several options regarding your order. Proceed with the item as is Request the item new in box Contact me to discuss further Cancel the item Click here to provide a response" To which I responded with "Request the item new in box". I never recieved any response from Guitar Center indicating they had heard my response or anything related to the product. I called the Guitar Center in Lakeland on FEB 27th at the number provided (BTW I am in Charleston SC) and spoke with the mgr there. I asked him what the status was of my item and he said there were None at the warehouse (which is what the email said) and it was backordered and would BE AVAILABLE on March 31st/April 1st. I asked then about the "new" Vox Limited Amps he had there and he had 2, said they were new but not in the original box. I said, well, have they been on your sales floor for everyone to play, he said yes, then I said, those are not new then, thats not what NEW means. I said no thanks I would rather wait on the Item on the backordered date he provided. Then, I get this notification literally a few hours ago today, March 6th, 2024--" We're sorry, but the below gear is no longer available. We have canceled the order for you, and no further action is required. If you're looking for alternatives, please call us and we'll help you out." I am steaming about this. To make matters even worse, they still have the item on their website like you can actually still buy this Amp. They tried to use Bait and Switch by indicating a "used" item is the same as a "new " item, that is unacceptable. They failed to communicate to me in any way about there not being any way to purchase a New Vox Amp. Needless to say I will never shop with Guitar Center ever again. I hope this review helps someone who may shop or shops there. PS-I have my order #, screenshots, and all emails to prove what happened here. Guitar Center is rarely a pleasant experience, but this location is pretty bad. Tucked in the corner of a shopping center, you first must do battle with the 200 other cars in this lot. Seriously- is this place ever not busy?? With only one major entrance/exit, this center is a nightmare to get in and out of on the weekends. Guitar Center has a good product selection, the problem lies with the staffing. We have been here several times and had identical experiences. We quickly find what we're looking for and then wait anywhere from 20-60+ minutes for someone to help us. My dude is a pro musician, he doesn't need to chat about what to buy or get advice, we are literally just WAITING to check out, sometimes for more than an hour. If this happened once, I could maybe forgive. Unfortunately, this is the standard here. Prices are fine, products are there, but good luck trying to get in and out of here without wanting to rage smash something afterwards. In our most recent, and hopefully last, visit to this location, we visited to purchase bass strings. After waiting for 35 minutes to get to the counter, we left. Only giving two stars because they sell good stuff. The staff here,however, is awful. I picked an Ernie Ball Flex Tune tuner off the rack that was clearly marked on sale with a bright yellow tag for 19.99. Next came the checkout process. Went to one counter with three staff behind it and proceeded to stand there as they did, well, pretty much nothing. Moved to a different counter where at least one person had the wherewithal to notice me waiting. He then tells me the tuner is $32 and change. I asked him to check again because they were marked down. I walked with him over to the rack and showed him the price. I'm still angry about what he did next: stated to me that "it's wrong," then proceeded to remove yellow sale tag and point to the regular price tag underneath it. Note to all Guitar Center staff and management: If you clearly list a product at a specific price you should honor it mistake or not. The sale tag was not a handwritten note. It was printed complete with corresponding barcodes and model numbers. This was your error, not mine (even though the staff person tried to make it look like it was). I very rarely give a bad review And I do all my shopping online and I never have a problem but buying from guitar center was a freaking nightmare a joke I already use the studio monitors, five days after the day before the supposed to arrive I get the call saying that my American Express they cannot confirm my name and number against the Bank files,I told him that is a mistake and I use this card for the last five years and never had a problem,but they made me call my bank waste 55 minutes and the bank said that there was no problem with the card, so I end up giving them my Visa card, the next day I was double charging on both cards, When I order the product i have specifically asked that it will be shipped to a store not to my house I didn't wanted it to sit outside near unattended On the door, I driven to the store and they told me it was shipped to my house, i just spend a hours driving each way in about $20 in fuel for no reason , I get home and open the box and uncover the wrap and The whole my brain off the speaker just pouring outside in in powder The speaker is completely ravish it's burned out, I called them to. I went to Guitar Ctr. yesterday to ask them to check a microphone for me to see if it works at all. I just moved to this area, and my studio gear had been packed up in the moving van of a not so reputable company. I plugged in everything to get ready to record some voiceover work, and I had no sound. When I told the Guitar Ctr. employee that I just needed to get it checked out, he sent me right around the corner to another employee, who in turn, took my mic and hooked it up to a computer and interface, and there was sound! So I didn't need a mic...I needed a new interface. I bought one like my old one, just because I like that brand, and he checked out my purchase. It was not really crowded when we were there, so maybe that was why the treatment was so good, I don't know...but I know that they are very knowledgeable employees, and I will go there for all of my recording woes, even tho' it's 18 miles from my house. read more

I've been on reviews good and bad because it helps us to pay more attention to the important things, I was probably the 30th person in line when this guitar center opened I have the T-shirt no pun intended, however the customer service is ridiculous anymore there was a level of customer attention back in the day that was totally different and I know society is changing tremendously and people really just do not care about whether you're a customer or not ... But it does not change the fact that this guitar center really could use an undercover boss visit. I am on several occasions have made a 30 minute trip into the store after calling a couple hours ahead and asking for a specific item granite not a pack of strings not a pig but some thing like a guitar processor that is only an average of $500 to $2000 and I was told yes we have this in stock and I would specifically say have you put your hand on this item so I don't waste the trip, the response yes I've put my hand on the item just to make the trip all the way into the store and after a one hour stand around the associate tell me they cannot find the product you cannot tell me that they sold in the hour that it took me to get there. One of my biggest complaints just the customer service they do have pretty good inventory although the store is a cluster mess... I would love to be the individual to own such a nice location with such a valued commodity because I would run that place tiptop shape if you did not want to work there for me at the level that I would require you could not work there. I have visited the Columbia store several times and totally different atmosphere so I do not think it's guitar center in general I just think the Charleston store has a problem getting quality employees... This is by far one of the worst guitar stores I have ever been in. I went in a few weeks ago to buy a guitar and they told me to come back later to get a brand new one in box. I came back to wait over an hour while the employees messed around to find that they no longer have those guitars. I then wanted to get a price estimate but then was rudely not waited on after another angry customer came back in so they left to deal with him. I would never recommend coming here because they have terrible work ethic and more than once they have lied to me about their coverage policies. read more

Went to trade in, and had done my homework. I had consulted the Guitar Center website, got their stock numbers and took 40% off. I had also called ahead and told them I was bringing a number of guitars and amps. I asked them when the most convenient time for them and showed up at that time. I was offered @ 45% of the value of the same guitars on their national website. When I asked them if they would review their national stock numbers, I was told no. When I asked to see "the manager" I was told, in effect, to leave. Suffice it to say they not only lost a customer who was going to buy a $2600 Gibson, but they created a former customer who will never do business with them again and will slam them at every opportunity. read more

I come here all the time and I've bought most of my items from them. As far as the staff is concerned they all seem really friendly to me and they try to make sure you buy the right item. I really like shopping at the guitar center. I play guitar and I've bought both acoustic and electrically there. My wife plays piano and we've bought a digital piano and other accessories from there for her. I always recommend shopping around but I really like the guitar center. As far as the lady complaining about she couldn't find acoustic guitars, you have to go to the back of the shopping area and they have a room filled with acoustic and electric-acoustic. read more

Dave Toohey and staff did everything they could to fix the wrong of GuitarCenter.com. I ordered a used guitar from GuitarCenter.com. An order confirmation email was sent to me. Two(2) days later, I received an email noting that the guitar is no longer available. I was pissed at this point. Two(2) days later, I received an email nothing that the order has been cancelled by Guitar Center. I did some research on this problem, and also called GuitarCenter.com. This is what a representative told me over the phone. Sometime between the time that the order confirmation email was sent to the time that I receive my guitar; my guitar was sold to someone else. In addition, after a customers order a guitar online, it is the responsibility of the customer to call the store themselves and let someone at the store knows that the they had just place an order for that particular guitar. So that that particular guitar is not sold to another customer. HOLY! Are you serious? Evidently, there is absolutely no communication between GuitarCenter.com and Guitar Center stores. They, GuitarCenter.com, take absolutely zero responsibility during this entire process, by putting the blame on the customer. If a customer is suppose to call the store to let the store know that they want to buy a particular guitar, then there's no point of even using GuitarCenter.com. I asked the representative that: "If I am suppose to call the store after I place an order online, then is GuitarCenter.com useless? Isn't it faster to just skip GuitarCenter.com and call the store directly in the first place?" There was a 30 seconds silence. I also asked them if this problem happens often. The answer is yes. Just wow. So that was the problem. Dave Toohey, and his staffs did everything they could to correct this wrong. Excellent communication through out the entire process. They finally cut a deal with me to get a new guitar of the same model for a discounted price. I hope my experience will help futures customers, and especially Guitar Center. There is a huge opportunity for improvement when it comes to synchronization between your online business and in-store business. I will continue to shop at Guitar Center stores, because most of the staff I met there are very cool, and down to earth people. But if I need to order someone online, I will not be visiting GuitarCenter.com any time soon. read more

I had ordered a Dean Guitar from them online and an amp through a different guitar center store. They emailed me today saying that they had already sold the guitar in store, then maybe they should start updating their online store so this doesn't happen cause now all I have coming is an amp and that's pretty useless without a guitar.
