Although while in the past I used to frequent Guitar Center on a fairly regular basis, I don't usually go to Guitar Center anymore... when I do, though, it's usually to the Towson Guitar Center. However, in the past few weeks I've had to make multiple trips to the Glen Burnie one. It wasn't too bad and had a surprisingly decent selection (including some amps I were interested in that were not available in the Towson location according to the GC website).
The service here is hit or miss, like most Guitar Centers. If you need help, actively seek out a salesperson... they will not come to you. Oh and here's a tip: If you frequent Guitar Center a lot, make sure you seek out that same salesperson over and over again. It develops a relationship and they'll treat you better.
Anyways, I went looking to replace an amp that died on me. For some reason an entire section of amps (the Orange amp section) did not work. I asked the employees about it and I guess something with the electrical wiring fizzed out. They did offer to move the items I was interested in to another section of the store to try out though.
I bought an item that day but ended up going back to return it a few days later. I figured while I was there, I might as well bring a guitar pedal I was gonna sell on eBay or Craiglist and see what'd they'd offer me. Well to make things short, unless you are absolutely desperate, I'd avoid selling used gear to Guitar Center. I bought the pedal for almost $200 new and knew that the going rate was around $125 used now. Guitar Center offered me.... $40.
Pretty much, like all Guitar Centers, it's a convenient place to try out a lot of gear. However, you should definitely do some research beforehand. While the employees are supposed to have a good knowledge of things, sometimes I've found it to be lacking. Tip #2: sometimes I ask an employee a question with a not-so-obvious answer that I already know the answer to and see how they respond. Depending on their answer, I'd ask them more (real) questions I have.
Tip #3: You also should take a peek at the Guitar Center website beforehand... sometimes there are printable coupons there.
I'd rate this one a 2.5ish. There was a decent selection of instruments (not as much as some other GC though) and they all seemed to be in good condition. You'll find your standard companies (Fender, Gibson, Boss, Korg, etc). There are some and some boutique items as well (saw a used Catalinbread pedal there) but they're more of a rarity. If you want boutique, look elsewhere (Appalachian Bluegrass in Catonsville is great for higher-end acoustics, for electric guitar stuff I find online stores best). But if you're in a pinch for accessories, it's not a bad place to go. read more
