Guitar Center was once a real destination for musicians. Unfortunately, now they no longer have a functioning sales staff. Today after flagging down three people to simply get a pedal out of a case I gave up after half an hour. On two previous occasions things they listed as having in stock they couldn't find. This is why companies like Sweetwater will continue to take over more of the market... All my orders have arrived within 36 hours from Sweetwater. They've been great with returns and you can get a sales person to notice you exist on the phone. It's too bad what's happened to Guitar Center? read more

I would have spared Guitar Center this Yelp review but since I can not get a manager on the phone, I'm doing it here. After considering buying a new guitar at a modest price point, I talked to a very friendly young guy at the repair center and told him about my old Epiphone. He agreed that probably a simple adjustment of the neck for under $100 bucks would do the trick. Today, when I walked back into the store, there was an incredibly sour, rude, and dismissive older guy -- I didn't catch his name, but his accent told me he was of Eastern European origin like me. When he first saw me, he started heading for the back door. But I said hi. So he stopped and turned around. He did not say hi back. I told him what I needed and about my conversation with his colleague the day before.. He gruffly told me to take my guitar out of the case and then mildly barked at me when I pointed it in the wrong direction because he hadn't told me to rest the neck on a rubber stand I didn't see. He poked around for a couple of seconds. Then asked me what the value of the guitar was. I told him it was a 1970s Epiphone, nothing special, but the label was also in the guitar so he could have seen for himself. Then he announced it would be AT LEAST $1200 to fix because of all the work he'd have to do. There was no, "Sorry to tell you," or "You might want to consider..." Just a get the f- out of here kind of attitude. I said, "Well, that's ridiculous," as he turned his back and I left. I mentioned it to the security guy at the door who had signed me in (because I walked in with a guitar in case) and he said, "You're not the first person to say that {the guy is a jerk and a poor representative for the company.) And he told me to come back tomorrow. That, frankly, is doubtful. And normally, I don't rag on people online. I like to point out who is doing a GREAT job. This time, though. I made the mistake of ordering a guitar from the Manhattan guitar Center here in New York City. It was a used fender telecaster listed in great condition. I paid for two day shipping and receive it. Two days later the guitar was packed recklessly I've never seen a guitar packed so sloppy as I unwrapped the guitar from the bubble wrap as I'm taking it out of the box I see two very noticeable dings on the front of my guitar that was not listed on guitar centers website. I paid a little extra because this guitar was listening in great condition. Meanwhile, it came all beat up not only that the toggle knob was missing the barrel tip and the guitar was filthy dirty I couldn't believe that a reputable company would send a guitar out like this. I'll never use guitar center again ever and I highly advise you do the same. Don't try calling them. You'll never get them on the line. They got my money I ain't getting it back. They make it hard for you to get a refund. I'm done with this company. I don't even know why I bothered using them again. Definitely have buyers remorse. read more

GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. I'VE NEVER SUGGESTED TOU AVOID ANY PLACE MORE WHEN IT COMES TO TRUSTING SOMEONE WITH YOUR INSTRUMENTS. I left my acoustic in their care for a full setup for a few weeks. The bridge needed some work, specifically. When I got my guitar back, I was shocked. In worse shape than I brought it in. They got glue aaaall around the bridge - it's noticeable, and ugly, you made my guitar ugly! Wtf! When I told the guy at checkout he "didn't see it" til I pointed it out, then suggested I leave it (really? leave my guitar another few weeks, maybe it's fixed, when it should have never been presented to me in such an unprofessional way to begin with) or I fix it myself with sandpaper. I wasn't trusting them with my guitar again. So I left. This was a real waste of $200+ In addition to the careless aesthetics, I have to get work done on a dead fret and saddle, which may be another $100-$200. I can't even play it it sounds so bad. Infuriating. When I initially went to drop the guitar off, no one was at the shop. They were gone for lunch. No one could let me know when they'd be back. I was sitting there for a long time. Other employees saw me waiting and no one helped me. Met me with an attitude. No urgency in offering assistance. Bummed by this experience all around. The more I look at this horrible work they did on my guitar which was a gift from my father, the angrier I am they even charged me for this crap. Or pretended NOT TO NOTICE. Do better. read more

If you want to have a good shopping experience, stay away from the Guitar Center store at the Brooklyn location, especially from the salesperson and store manager named Nico. If you can't trust the manager's word, the store is not trustworthy. I've been a Guitar Center customer for many years, and it's sad to see the decline in customer service. It would be better to close the store and sell online only because the in-person experience has been the worst possible. I was deceived in a dishonest way. My complaint has already been sent to the company's management, but nothing will erase the terrible experience I had at this store. read more

First the bad: I brought a a Squier strat in because it was playing sharp in the first 5 frets. I knew what they needed to do just file the nut. When it was supposedly done I went back to pick it up and they said they couldn't fix it. On top of that they charged me $70 for nothing. I am not sure I want to take any guitars there anymore even for a simple setup. The good: They did a good job setting up the Gibson bass I brought in. So WTF?? Why was I charged $70 for nothing? We all know what guitar center is. It's big, it's corporate, and employees range from knowledgeable saints to miserable slags who are constantly questioning what they did to deserve their lot in life. To be fair I'd be miserable too if I had to deal with the idiots that wander in to this place on an hourly basis, having to listen to dudes play butt rock blues riffs from sun up to sundown. However GC is good for picking up basic supplies, and great if you want a simple set up for your guitar. The repair team at this location is supremely helpful, and above all else accessible. Most experienced luthiers in the neighborhood act like you should kiss their feet for gracing you with their presence, only working three days a week (if they feel like it) and charging outrageous hourly fees. Guitar Center is affordable and always there. That's something I appreciate. read more

I tried to rent some speakers from this location. I called in advance and spoke to Miguel (manager), who confirmed they had speakers and I can come in and rent them. I told him I'd be there in an hour. A few issues I had: 1) They first wouldn't let me rent the speakers as I didn't have a NY drivers license. I offered to pay a deposit instead, and they agreed (he quoted $3500, not sure why so high for two JBL 10 inch speakers which should cost $1000) 2) When I got there, front desk person didn't know where the rentals department was (and pointed me downstairs) 3) After waiting at the rentals department for 15 mins, I find Miguel who told me that someone came within the hour and rented all remaining speakers, and the rest he had in stock are broken. He didn't seem apologetic at all. Ideally I wish he called me when the speakers were rented, as it took me a long time to get to Brooklyn. Most incompetent group of people I have ever witnessed. I dropped my bass off for repair, and they told me they would reach out in a few days to let me know the diagnosis... That was NINE (9) weeks ago, and I still have not heard anything back. I have had to keep calling them, and the response is always the same "we're getting to it! Yours is next! We just lost 2 other repair people so it's just me!" Maybe hire more repair people? Maybe stop spouting every time I call that you offer repairs? What a joke. I called twice to ask questions about bringing my guitar in for service. Got put on hold for 5 minutes and was then hung up on the 1st time. 2nd time I was transfered to service dept where I waited 10 minutes before giving up. I would love to give our local guitar center a fantastic review but sadly it doesn't deserve five stars. A three star review is actually being generous. We dropped off my husbands guitar on Wednesday to have a very minor repair done. He was assured it would be ready the next day. It is now five days and when I called, no one had a clue. I finally got someone on the phone who was more experienced and said they hadn't even looked at the guitar and they may need another week. They would "try" to get to it today. If by tomorrow nothing has been done, I will pick it up & take it elsewhere, He is shopping for a new guitar and we saw several that interested him. At this point, I think it may be best to spend our money somewhere else. read more

I'm a fan of this location compare to the ones in Manhattan. It's not crowded and the customer service is excellent. I found my baby, a Fender acoustic/electric guitar, here. There is this room where they stored all the expensive guitars and it's soundproof. My friend and I were strumming a couple of guitars for 30 minutes until I finally decided on one. Can I first just say that Trev is the absolute GOAT. Wanted to get some advice before purchasing a secondhand guitar from someone so I stopped by. He was extremely helpful with what the usual pitfalls for a used guitar are, price ranges, and proactively offered estimated repair needs and so forth. I left feeling SO PUMPED and READY to CONQUER the craigslist / online marketplace of secondhand guitars!! That being said, I'm a rookie with mostly experience playing the ukulele so I came back with a guitar that was worth not much... he was really kind and helped me salvage as much of it as was possible, even setting up, restrung, cleaning, and some rudimentary repairs for free... I was there near the end of the workday so there weren't that many customers around, but he still didn't have to do all that. He was also just a great person to talk to; has so much experience playing, and so many cool life stories to tell. Some tips - I read some of the negative reviews post-experience, and just wanted to point out that there's A LOT of free space at the location to try out instruments! The staff will generally stay out of your way unless you actively seek help from them because they want to give you the space and time to jam / experience the magic!! And for people who mention employees standing idle - The way it works here is that there are "specialists" who are super passionate about the instruments they are mainly giving advice for - guitars / keys / drums etc but they also have some knowledge of adjacent instruments, though if you want a big job done and someone with your instrument came in first, you'd have to wait. I was so flustered and crestfallen when I came in with this guitar that I thought I'd paid a fair price for and realized wasn't worth much... and Trev was working with another customer; there was a new guy there who was a drums specialist but gave me some good advice and tried to make me feel better. I really wish I got his name, he was so sweet. I left the place feeling like I'd just had a meet-cute scene from a movie, a beautiful guitar, and more money in my pocket than I expected for all the fixes that were done to the instrument (I spent ~$30 for everything). No complaints; if I lived closer I would definitely go back for all my other music needs! read more

I have been following up about a job application I sent in for this location for the past week now...finally got ahold of a manger on the phone today. As I was mentioning that I applied and was about to ask to set up an interview, I was rudely interrupted by the "manager" to tell me he's not hiring till spring/summer. I proceeded to ask why there were a bunch of job listings online (for this specific location) and he said quote "we're always taking in applications" and then began to hang up on me. I found this EXTREMELY unprofessional... #1 to be posting that many job listings as "immediate job offers" and then #2 to say they "keep them on file" just in case. When you are hiring for a job, say what you mean or don't put the listing up. Seems like the type of manager to want free labor. read more

Hi, I would like to relay my experience at the Flatbush location because I believe it is important for the management to be informed of what's happening there. At around 4:45pm on Wednesday, Dec 22nd,  I was at the acoustic guitar department choosing guitar for my 10 y o student. The girl and her mom were with me and we settled on an almost $700 steel string acoustic guitar. I asked the guy who was handling the acoustic guitar department  (taller, short light brown  hair, white): if my student buys that guitar would it be possible to adjust the action of the neck because it was low and there was fret buzz? He grabbed the guitar from me, played a bunch and said that there is nothing wrong with the guitar and that it doesn't buzz. He said that they don't sell guitar that have "problems", that it was a normal sound and that's how guitars are supposed to sound . Being a session guitar player for the last 15 years  with a conservatory degree in guitar performance (I make my living as a performing/recording session musician and a teacher),  playing and owning multiple guitars throughout my career, I know what guitars with low action and fret buzz sound like. I mentioned to the guy again:" the neck  definitely needs to be adjusted and that it has a definite fret buzz. Would it be possible to adjust the truss rod at this location? ". This set him off yelling at me in the presence of my young student and her mom saying that I either buy that guitar or not. The mom stepped in for me asking him why he was so rude. This set him off even more and he left us saying that he doesn't have any time for us. The  level of sudden anger and hate in how he was treating us was surprising for someone who you just met. I especially didn't want a 10 y o girl who was so happy to come to a music store to choose a new guitar for herself witnessing a man 3 times her age treating a female guitar player like that and refusing her any assistance. Stale, old school misogyny is the last thing I want my young students to see and experience. It is unacceptable that a guitar seller would behave like this around a child. This should not be happening in a professional environment. This experience entirely ruined the mood for us; the girl didn't look as enthusiastic after that. We left without buying any guitar because the vibe was completely ruined. This semester I have 5 students who  need new 4/4 size guitars and I was planning to bring them to the Flatbush location. Not any more. I told my fellow musicians about this experience. I don't want my female students to experience the misogyny and  incompetence of guys who work there and have such a negative association with playing guitars.   If I was treated normally I would have brought in 5 more customers. Many new guitars need neck adjustments; not a big deal. There is no reason to yell at a customer who requests a slight truss rod adjustment.   I hope that the management at 139 Flatbush Ave, Brooklyn NY location will have a meeting and conversation with the guys that they employ (they don't employ any women ever). No child or woman should have such an experience at a music store and if no one cares about that, then, at least,  they should care about the damage they wreck on their sales commissions and on the business.  Women  buy equipment and guitars as well and some are teachers with multiple students who buy guitars. These should be good enough reasons to address the toxic environment at the Flatbush location. read more

I went into the Brooklyn store to sell a bass I barely used. The Pro Audio Associate (sounded like "Trey" or maybe "Trev") was haggling with a customer and visibly frustrated. When he offered assistance to me--before concluding his business with the previous customer--I had the GC product listing with all the relevant info about the bass ready for him, but he shrugged it off. He informed me I needed to provide ID to make the sale. I asked "oh, you need ID?" while reaching for my wallet--which contains several IDs--which prompted him to snarl "hey we don't have to buy anything from you, especially in this condition." What's with the attitude? The bass was basically new and on backorder, so they actually needed to buy it from me; I also received more money than I initially estimated. While I was waiting 20 minutes to get paid, the associates were making fun of another customer; very encouraging to newer players, guys. When GC first opened years ago, I pretty much lived there and worshipped all the employees. Everyone was welcoming, humble, knowledgable, and passionate, and I watched as they were removed from the store one by one because they failed to upsell. It was more important to say "buy something or get out" to us kids with stars in our eyes. As I stated, I went to SELL something. I haven't purchased anything from GC in years, mostly because of the sales associates and their poor customer service skills. It's not my fault that you're the gym teachers of the music world. Don't bother going in the store, as they don't want you there, and they won't even regard your safety by wearing masks. Maybe when they start losing commission things will be different. read more

This is the worst experience I've ever had. I was in the area recently, so I came here to purchase a wider leather strap for my beloved Les Paul. After finding what I needed, I went to checkout. The cashier sat around and answered questions for people who passed by when there was clearly a visible line forming. After waiting patiently, I asked if he was the cashier, and when he said yes, I politely asked if he could scan our items. The cashier rudely rolled his eyes and started setting up and packing a couple's guitar for 45 MINUTES. Who does that!??! After he was done with them, an employee brought him ANOTHER guitar to box which took ANOTHER 15 minutes before I asked if he could just scan my damn strap so I could leave. The attitude he gave me was disgusting. That's what I get for trying to support a brick and mortar store for a change. Do yourself a favor- save your money, time, and energy and shop online at Sweetwater. They're a hell lot cheaper and their customer service is phenomenal. Never coming back! read more

I have previously shopped at this location before with purchasing 2 guitars and everything the sales associate offered even yet protection plan. For some reason today everyone was busy doing nothing. They clearly seen me standing waiting to be helped. Two were standing talking to security and the other were standing by the computer maybe helping someone I wasn't sure. After standing there for about five minutes, I said excuse me and he might have been the put his finger up like he was so busy. The other person asked me what did I need I told him the item. He first points to were the items were and I asked For a specific brand. He then put another brand on the counter and walked away. Like seriously!!! Now I have to order from Amazon! Terrible experience! I went in excited to buy something i set my mind to. I come in, there's barely any customers, i was standing there making eye contact with every sales rep waiting to talk to them to ask for help they all pretended not to see me. Is my money not good enough? The "manager" with longer hair short/medium height was arrogant and dismissive when i approached him and brushed me off to some other sales worker who seemed bothered he had to help me (it was literally seeing to check a product in stock). I was furious and felt unwelcomed and so turned off. I then was approached by Jason who was very polite and helpful (hence to 1 star), he was very nice and smoothed out my frustration. Terrible Service. I brought a guitar in for warranty service. The tech could hear the problem and promised to deal with the manufacturer. Two weeks later I got a call telling me there was nothing wrong with the guitar that anybody could find and that Epiphone would not authorize a repair. When the problem got worse, I called Epiphone directly. The person diagnosed the problem immediately and put the needed part into the mail. Obviously the tech person at Guitar Center had done nothing. I wrote to Guitar Center HQ to complain and was told that the Brooklyn store would reach out to me. Finally someone did, at 5:15 p.m. on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend, just as I was heading out (you think that was deliberate?). The person promised to call back Tuesday but never did. I wrote to HQ again and they just blew me off, giving me a web address with other warranty repair centers. And of course the link was wrong and led nowhere. No apology, no follow-up, nothing. So while Guitar Center is sometimes the only game in town (except for Sam Ash and some specialty shops) avoid Brooklyn's service department. No one seems to care much about getting anything done or reaching out to customers. An update (two weeks later). Guitar Center saw my initial review and asked me to call, which I did. Someone then called from the store and apologized for forgetting to call me. He offered to get in touch with the 14th Street service manager and get my repair moved to the top of the list so when I brought the guitar in, I wouldn't have to wait for the repair. Almost needless to say, I never heard from anyone. Rather than let Guitar Center touch this, I'm going to have it done elsewhere. read more

Incompetent liars at best. Crooks at the worst. I brought in a banjo to replace a tuner. Simple work, but I didn't have the tools in my apartment. So I bring it in, and this portly neckbearded fellow named Kevin tells me they don't have the parts, but that he can send it to his other shop to do the work. It's a Saturday, and he says I should get a call with a time/cost estimate on Monday or Tuesday and that the repair should take a week and cost around $40. I agree and leave my banjo. I get a call on Thursday that week from the repair shop. They say it should be around $50, and then tell me that their delivery guy only makes trips to and from Guitar Center Brooklyn on Thursdays. I ask them where they're located in case I want to get the repair done elsewhere for faster/cheaper. Turns out they're in Freehold, New Jersey! So basically, the earliest I could get my banjo back is the following Thursday (when they do deliveries), which is two weeks after when I left it for a simple repair. And I can't get it back earlier because it's in a different state. So with my banjo held hostage, I agree to let them fix it. The next Thursday, I get a call saying it's done and that I can pick it back up at Guitar Center. Expecting around a $50 bill, I get rung up at $65 + tax. Ridiculous. It works fine, but if I knew it was going to cost $65, I would've ordered a tuner from StewMac.com (which I'm sure is what they did), gone to my parents house for tools and done the repair myself. Also, on my way out, there was a poor girl who needed her guitar restrung on the same day. They quoted her $40 + the cost of strings. Stay the hell away. edit: upon further examination, they also went into the zipper compartment of my gig bag and opened up strings I had in there to restring the banjo. They did not at all ask my permission to do this at all whatsoever. read more

There was no guitar technician on hand to help me with my guitar, or say he'd get a battery and install it. The salesman OBVIOUSLY looked down on me for having a question about the difference between microphones. They had no brochures in English about the insurance I bought on my microphone. I'm a beginner guitar player and was gifted an electric guitar that I had no clue what to do with lol. One of my strings broke so I took it in last month. I wanted a Technics 1200 turntable and was searching high and low. Tried craigslist and e-bay to no avail. I spent 3 days texting with a guy for a turntable for $450 and he told me I needed to bring four new $100 dollar bills and a new $50 dollar bill...like really get lost. So I searched the web page for Guitar Center and they had a crap load of turntables. Found one at 14th street Guitar Center and that turntable was over priced at $440.00 stiff pitch control, dirty and just no good. Then I went to this Guitar Center on Flatbush Ave and looked at the one they had there and it was in bad shape. So back home I returned and scoured Guitar Center used gear web page again and found a nice Technics 1200 mk2p for $369.00 which was quite reasonable. But the turntable was located in Paramus, New Jersey. Called and asked a few questions and ended up paying with tax and shipping $420.00. They shipped the turntable to the Brooklyn store which was quite reasonable shipping was like $21.00. Plus the salesman in NJ told me the cover was cleaned of all stickers but was in really good shape. The 1200 mk2p has the black matte finish and was only available for sale in USA. So checked the platter, magnet, turned it on checked speed light for pitch and all screws. Checked spindle made sure it wasnt loose and also checked feet. Dam dont want a reject and it passed inspection. I got it home and hooked it up, boy what a nice sound this turntable has. I plan to upgrade the stylus and shell head. But just by being patient and looking around I scored a great used turntable. Thanks Guitar Center you are a good store with decent used gear. Plus if I wasnt satisfied with the performance of the turntable I had 30 days to return it for full refund. read more

I am always dressed nice, but either way it's a mall so why does it matter?? Oh yeah, I'm brown. Overall, Terrible customer service. When her employees were helping me, she looked me up and down and asked if I needed anything then kept checking me out like I stole something. I had other bad experiences here. The black ppl who actually work here don't even think their black because again, I can never mention hip hop or artists of color. They look at me like I have two heads. I look much younger than my age and I usually wear a backpack so maybe they thought i was one of the black high school kids coming in to play around on the pianos. Asked a sales associate for a guitar and he never came back. i went to look for him and saw him playing around on midi keyboards and chatting with his coworkers. even when there was a line of customers waiting to pay, he would be talking to the cashier instead of taking the next customer on a different computer. read more

I've only received fantastic service at this Guitar Center so I don't really understand the negative reviews. Fun fact, I don't play the guitar. Unless you want me to play you twinkle twinkle, I don't play the guitar. But I do play the violin and in more regularly starting to play again I've needed to get some things quickly. They don't keep much inside any of their stores but their online selection for violin products is surprisingly extensive. But why did I choose to order from Guitar Center? There's a huge explanation for this. Several items are marked slightly cheaper than a typical violin shoppe would sell the same product at. Even prices were cheaper than amazon. Also, free shipping if you go and pick it up at the store yourself after ordering it online. Hotdog. I needed a mute that literally costs like $2 for a tiny piece of rubbery plastic. Mission accomplished. I needed to get a new bridge also recently and realized the one I ordered online wasn't good enough quality and just didn't sound good with my instrument because typically they have to be carved down with knives and sanding tools. So I returned it and it was an easy smooth transaction. To be honest, I'm probably going to continue ordering things and picking them up if it's like strings and rosin and basic necessities because it's just so easy and there are so many in the city and Brooklyn. They also send me in my inbox coupons literally every week for like 15% off of stuff and I sit there thinking 'but DO I need anything?' But the workers here were always friendly and super helpful. read more

I was just going to let this slide, but then I figured, if I don't complain about the service at this particular Guitar Center then you may, just like me, unnecessarily experience horrible customer service. And to be clear, customer service over the phone for Guitar Center (the 855- number...) they are phenomenal. I spoke to a Robyn S. and a Jordan G. and they were courteous and went above and beyond to try to assist me. Today however, the cashier (not sure if his name was Marc F., Jonathan P. or something else. He gave me two receipts and they each had a different name on it) was beyond unapproachable. It took him longer to assist me than it should have because he had to keep changing his music... he had to stop and give some potential customers a dirty look because they were testing equipment and Marc/Jonathan couldn't hear his music over theirs... and of course he had to stop assisting me to go turn his music up... I waited. What else could I do but wait, he had my money & my items. The last straw, he messed up & didn't not give me the correct change and although he said "my bad" upon hearing of this, he felt that (1) saying sorry was optional because he never apologized and (2) felt that saying he "made a mistake" was different than saying he "messed up." In fact, when my friend and I looked at each other incredulously because he corrected me when I said he messed up, he then said "you say tomato, I say squash." WHAT?!?! I'm not sure how he got a job in customer service when he's just so ornery & I'm not sure why he stayed once he realized he hates people. If it weren't for my son, I would have taken my money & went elsewhere but, I was under a time constraint. It goes without saying that this location will have to make MANY changes before I return. Starting with getting rid of the (I hate to say it) angry black guy (with locs... in the DJ section) maybe change his hours to... umm... whenever you're closed! read more

Their return policy is ridiculous. First, the workers didn't even acknowledge me in line and left the counter before saying a word to me. I stood there for 5 minutes. When they came back, they were working with customers (supposedly), and sent me upstairs to the DJ department to make my return. That. Is. RIDICULOUS. I leave the store, take the elevator up (stroller), and walk to the DJ section of the store. There was a counter right in front of the door, so I begin getting the item to return. "Uh ma'am, can you walk around to here." He wanted me to push my stroller and this box around the peninsula of the counter to the cash wrap - which was literally 2 feet away. So you mean to tell me you couldn't just take the box the 2 feet to scan it? I can't.....your customer service is on a pre-k level, not even elementary. read more
