Met at Macy's. Saw a sleek young woman standing there, but no it wasn't her. Hippie-looking woman, long tangled hair, maxi skirt, complaining about menstrual cramps...that's her! Went to Macy's clearance racks (did I look poor?) and tried on some clothes. Not really my style but that's the point right? She was able to get me a discount which was nice. Didn't go to any other stores. Bummed because I have a Macy's at home. I wanted the San Francisco experience. Next was a salon (friend of hers) where I got basically the same highlights and cut/style that I get from my own stylist for 3 times the price. Wrapped it up with makeup, actually from Macy's make-up counter which they do for free. It was strongly suggested I buy some of the products. Underwhelmed. Then she mentioned most people tip so of course I did. When my husband picked me up he was surprised I didn't look much different. Back at our hotel I tried everything on for him. We both decided most of it was too young for me or just not practical. Think club wear. I kept 2 or 3 pieces, and returned everything else the next day. The same salesgirl was there. I explained the situation, and she said she could help me look. We found several nice outfits. She was very kind and helpful. So would i recommend? Absolutely not. Horrible experience. Long story short: my husband paid $800 and I all got was a major runaround including a phone call emphasizing how limited clothing options were for plus sizes. Yes, I know-this is why my husband was contacting a professional! For Christmas one year, my husband gave me a gift certificate for Guerrilla Makeovers. For over a year, I kept reaching out to schedule this service. I'd send an email asking for a date, and I'd get a response saying something like "let me know when you are available." I'd respond saying I was completely open and then get ghosted. This repeated every couple months for over a year, when I finally asked for a refund. That got Beth's attention, and evidently there was some organizational change where one of the sylists left the business, yadda, yadda, yadda. Finally, after several re-schedules, there was a mandatory "phone meeting." I expected this to just be setting an appointment, but no. For over an hour she insisted "there MUST be some reason that you felt you needed my services" and she would not accept that my husband wanted a nice pick-me-up for me. She wanted to get into skin care, eyeglasses and a bunch of things I didn't want. I really just would have liked some new clothes. In addition to that, I was going to have to go to San Francisco because she felt there was a "better selection of plus size clothing." Oh, god I HATE the size thing, which is why I don't go clothes shopping for fun. Then, there were a series of dates made and cancelled at the last minute. And sure, she got sick and that's sad, but the reality is that this thing was dragging out. Almost 2 years of trying to redeem a gift certificate. It was falling FAR FAR afield from the positive experience my husband was trying to give. Then the day finally came the we were supposed to meet at a shopping center. I myself was under the weather but trying to just get this thing done because I wanted SOME sort of value for hubby's investment and it was becoming a chore. And then I was the one that screwed up for the first time in this bad experience that was dragging on for 2 years. Being under the weather I fell asleep and slept through our meeting. To Beth's credit, she did try calling to confirm as she was traveling to the city. But the screw up was that when I didn't confirm she neither pulled the plug (isn't that why we confirm?) nor called my husband, who was the person who was the purchaser. Just 3 calls to my cell phone which did not wake me. When I got up I got her messages, realized what happened and felt bad. I called her and apologized. I told her I'd make it right for the wasted time. At that point, she informs me that the value of my gift certificate was completely used up and that her time was worth $100 per hour. She did a quick accounting of time, including the painful phone call (which was drawn out by her insistence that I needed more than just some new clothes,) her travel time to and from the city (which was a location SHE chose, when we both live in the East Bay) as well as her time selecting clothes and waiting. Honestly, I was expecting that maybe a typical living wage rate times the 3 hours she spent that day, but she said I owed her hundreds. Not having realized what hubby spent at that point I asked, "So how much did my husband give you?" And she danced around a bit and I found out it was nearly a grand that my husband had invested in this fiasco. I was shocked and asked if that included some clothes, too? Oh, no. She seemed even offended and said, "You have to buy your OWN clothes, I provide a SERVICE." After 2 years of being jerked around as a customer, there was no understanding? Her side was that her sicknesses were REAL and somehow mine wasn't because I didn't call her in advance and re-schedule. No comprehension that 2 years of ghosting and re-scheduling were part of the problem. Those other dates when I was feeling great and ready and cleared my schedule had NO BEARING on her view of what happened. At that point I was angry and just got off the phone with her and told my husband that as the purchaser he needed to do something. He asked for a refund and even 50% would have been fine. But no, absolutely no money possible. She GRUDGINGLY offered a re-schedule, but after having to pursue Guerrilla Makeovers for 2 years for a service when they felt I was legitimately owed the service, I couldn't imagine what the scheduling would be like when she felt it was a freebie. Plus, she'd been pretty mean over the whole thing. Why would I want to then spend a day shopping with her? This was a year ago and it still makes me want to cry. I have a really cool story to tell, to prove it! Things I've gained from my work with Beth have been: - Being able to navigate and find things that I like and that are a good fit with my body type, profession, lifestyle, etc. - Feeling confident wearing what I like - Feeling confident about how I look, no matter what I'm wearing There have been people, at times in my life, who have told me I don't know how to pick out clothes. One even told me I don't know how to match colors. In response, I've unfortunately questioned my senses of style and color. At other times of my life, I've worn what I wanted to wear but have believed that I was "being a rebel" by doing so and that I was stubbornly willing to "look dorky." In 2020, I've been training and preparing for months to help homeless kids with their homework, which will now, sadly, have to happen over video on my laptop. It dawned on me that when I was growing up, there were certain people who dressed in a way that made me unconsciously feel like they had worn something special because they were looking forward to seeing me: mostly my school teachers. It wasn't that they were wearing something especially formal, professional, or stylish; it was that they liked what they were wearing and they felt good about it. I decided I want to be able to give that unconscious gift to the kids with whom I'll be doing homework help. I discovered Guerilla Makeovers on Yelp. Beth had had me write down some things that I felt described me and my style, or that I wished were part of my style. I had given up on crazy-fun ideas like cowboy boots and biker jackets a long time prior, but I put them in my list anyway, along with things like "vivid colors." I figured that Beth could teach me about "other things;" it hadn't occurred to me that Beth could teach me how to use and enjoy my own "crazy-fun" ideas, no matter how casual, professional, or formal my dress would be. After the onset of shelter-in-place orders, we met via FaceTime. I showed Beth my closet. She asked me to show her my "favorite clothes." I showed her my Indigo Girls, Elton John, and Queen t-shirts with my faded jeans and my nondescript black boots. I showed her a floral-pattern short-sleeve men's shirt with a collar that was my favorite at the time. She said, "Let me show you some things with the Elton John shirt." She had me try different things with my clothes and with my hair which would never have occurred to me to try. I was very curious, and it was only the beginning of the process! Over the next couple of months, we met multiple times. She taught me things about the way clothes fit different bodies and about how to know more about what you're ordering online by the way the clothes and fit are described. We experimented and settled on a strategy. I started shopping online after she taught me some more things and suggested some websites. I sent her photos and screen shots and we continued to meet periodically. It was a very effective process. I've decided that I probably enjoy the laid-back, zero-immediacy nature of online shopping just as much as I would have enjoyed an exciting makeover day in San Francisco, but that's just me. I ended up with a plum-purple vegan leather jacket, skinny jeans, black biker boots, and vivid shirts, shoes, and even socks! My hair was still in its "quarantine cut," but after working with Beth, I understood what I wanted to do with it once the hair salons would open again. She also helped me to understand what I want to do the next time I order new glasses. I had so much fun! For my birthday, I found gorgeous blue paisley cords on eBay. It felt like I could happily wear and enjoy things for which I would have considered myself a "rebel" or "dork" before. Having confidence is a different thing from being a rebel. One night, I watched Rocketman--already one of my favorite movies. The scene came where Elton John and Bernie Taupin had just written "Your Song" and they were in the record producer's office. The producer was telling them that he had booked them a gig at the Troubadour in Los Angeles and that they were going to start recording an album. I noticed that I liked the funky late-60s clothes that Elton and Bernie were wearing. I looked a little closer at Elton John's pants... and discovered that HE WAS WEARING MY BLUE PAISLEY CORDS! In May this year, for my birthday, I decided I wanted a change. My style had not changed for years, I had the same type of clothes, the same haircut, the same attitude. Not all of it was bad, I was just bored by it. You know when you put on this outfit that makes you feel like you own the world??? That's what I wanted to fill my closet with. I wanted something fresher, younger, suited for travel and versatility, and matching it to my needs at work as I am taking over leadership roles in a large software company. Now, of course, May 2020 is in the midst of COVID19 - perfect timing. But Beth was up for the challenge. We met via facetime & zoom, shared links via text message, and figured out my style. It is apparent that Beth has done this for a while and is an expert in this! 2hrs of zoom conversation and she has an image of your best look and closet to go with it in mind. We shopped online, I sent photos of the outfits, and then together we played with combining everything. I also got new glasses. Now here is the funny story - she picked them with the new haircut in mind. My COVID hair was completely different from it. I got the new glasses, and 1-2 people noticed. Finally, in August I was able to get an outdoor haircut. Same glasses, same clothes, but new haircut. Now EVERYONE commented on the new glasses. It just all magically came together and I have been getting compliments in every meeting for the new look. And it is all via zoom! Beth could see it all - many months in advance, via a video chat. I rarely write a review or complain however this experience was so bad I felt a need to. Based on the reviews here my friend & I signed up for makeovers. This was sold to us as something we could do together but when we got there Beth split us up. She didn't listen to what we wanted. At one point she was pushing me on why I didn't want to wear white pants and kept barking at me "why, why, why." She didn't listen to my answer the first time and instead humiliated me in Macy's. As I tried on clothes she kept barking at me when I didn't like something and yelled orders to the poor sales clerk who was trying to help her. I went back the next day and apologized to the woman. She also sat in an adjacent dressing room and breast fed her child all the while yelling and berating me for not liking what she choose for me. I respect any mother's right to breast feed their babies and I didn't mind that she brought her child. I just don't think that being exposed to the more graphic side of breast feeding was appropriate and was far from professional. Beth was pushy, disrespectful and rude to everyone in the stores. It was embarrassing and except for our haircuts (by excellent stylists not Beth) it was unprofessional. Her idea of a facial makeover is to barge her way into store makeup counters like she owned them. To have a makeover in the middle of a department store was not what we expected. We could have done that for free. This was a stressful experience and I cut it short because I had enough of her guerrilla style. I guess the name should have been a clue. This is not an experience for anyone who believes they deserve to be respected. And be sure to get your quote and understand the terms in writing. I booked my time with her and then my friend added hers and rather than bill us individually I had a double charge on my account. It was unprofessional at best and ridiculous at worst. It's Beth's way or the highway and I chose to walk away. A total waste of money and a ruined birthday experience. read more

Beth Alyse has been absolutely amazing - I was sceptical of the whole makeover idea but now I've had two sessions with her and it's been a splendid ride. I had so much fun with her that I promised her this epic of a review that has to be broken down into chapters. *** IF YOU INSIST, MUM *** I met Beth when my mother suggested a makeover as a Christmas present. I was mildly insulted at first because I know how to work a cocktail dress, but 1) Mum guilted me saying that she'd been wanting to go for a makeover with her daughter for YEARS but I'd been too busy / cheapskate before now, and 2) On second thought, I am a software engineer who wears a hoodie and jeans to work 4 out of 5 days. Maybe I could use a little help. Beth Alyse spent the first half-hour getting to know my mum and I. I insisted that I hated wearing jewellery on my hands, and just like schlubbing to work in a T-shirt and my Chucks. Little did I know she would change my mind. BA was so much fun to talk to, and came up with the following schedule for us: 1. picking out dresses for work + holiday parties 2. skincare and makeup 3. accessorizing * No time to do my hair but I came back for another session to tackle this. Beth Alyse picked out maybe 30 dresses for us to try on. She was charming and sincere, telling us what looked drop-dead gorgeous on us, what dress could be saved with a belt or other accessory, and what we should chuck in the "No" pile. I get debilitating decision fatigue when shopping so it was so nice to have an expert share the load. Beth is decisive, thinks sharp, and as another reviewer put it, will come up with a "fashion solution" to help make your outfit look good whatever your constraints may be. She has great interpersonal skills, reads people's personalities well and can help them take pride in their strengths. It was an incredibly fun day and gave me a solid grasp of fashion principles that I can apply to my life. E.g. Beth Alyse picked a really cute jersey dress that I *wanted* to wear to work but it was $200 so I didn't buy it but came up with top + pencil skirt combinations from my wardrobe to recreate the look. And Mum was glowing with her new skincare and looked about 30 yrs old (!!!). I wouldn't call the makeover a life-changing experience, because I am fortunate to have a lot of awesome things in my life. But I will say that the very next day, wearing my new signature cuff on my wrist and a hint of makeup on my walk to work, some guy said to me "Miss, you are very beautiful." Yes I get hollered at a lot (I live south of the Tenderloin) but this was one of the more eloquent ones and I've had an extra spring in my step ever since. *** THE GENTLEMAN'S STYLE GUIDE *** After that successful venture, I knew I wanted to put her through the REAL crash test - making over my engineer friend Z. He's a really good platonic friend of mine, one of the most brilliant engineers who has hand-built cars and laser pulse generators and somehow also thinks that socks with sandals, cargo pants and a free T-shirt are acceptable dinner attire. I knew too little about men's fashion to help him, and boy was Beth Alyse the perfect teacher. The biggest testament to Beth's abilities imo is that she managed to transform this stubborn dude's opinion from "This whole idea makes me uncomfortable, I'm backing out" to "Wow Letitia, that was actually really fun" (he bought most of the clothes we picked!) She was firm but did not patronize him, and got him practical clothes that fit his lifestyle (biking, messy garage work). While we were at Alex's hair salon, she picked out the perfect colours of shirts that matched Z's hair and eyes (lavender and navy), jeans that removed 30 lbs from his frame, and oh my god that blazer. Plus little tricks with buttons and sleeves that every man should know to turn an outfit from standard to SEXAYY. Useful, are her little mnemonics and mantras about style. A skilled teacher, Beth Alyse is. With the hairstyle Alex gave him, Z looked like a freaking celebrity afterwards! I knew Beth Alyse had big plans for my hair, and she and Alex (who is such a boss with cars and motorbikes btw) really hit a home run - big, sexy sixties curls that I had no idea how to obtain before this session. They even taught me the proper way to tie a ponytail (yep, been doing it wrong for 25 years) and put my hair up into a sleek chignon. I could not stop staring at myself in the mirror after they were done with me. The best part is Beth Alyse is just an absolute sweetheart. I would have no qualms about texting her if I'm getting ready for a party and need to know which dress to wear or how to do my hair. I have already recommended her to my coworkers who have been looking for style refreshes. I got a makeover with Guerrilla from Jack a few years ago after begging him to nominate me for TLC's What Not To Wear. omg - it was fantastic. My guy (John?) took me places I would have never thought to enter and had me try on clothes that I would've normally passed by for various reasons. He asked my budget and stuck with it. There was no pressure to buy anything at any time. He opened my eyes to see that you don't have to be a size 6 to be sexy, or cute, or whatever look you are going for. Honest too - I would put something on and he would say "uh, take that off right now." He opened my eyes as to what types of clothes I should wear that suit my shape and even my face (e.g no high round collars for my round-y face). I had a 6-hour shopping session with Beth Alyse. It started with her pushing me very very hard to tell her I believed that she could solve all my problems (not just style problems, but my skin problems and social anxiety as well). She refused to move on to talk about clothes until I assented. She brought me lots of clothes and helped me find things that fit, but largely ignored everything I told her about what kind of clothes I wanted and how I wanted to end up looking in an emotional / stylistic sense. (for example, I told her that I didn't want a lot of wool, because my wife has a contact allergy to it, and I ended up with a huge pile of wool sweaters.) I don't know much about clothes and didn't go in with a strong idea of my own "style." If you're a stronger type and you want someone with strong opinions of her own -- or if you have no opinions at all and want someone who will just tell you what to buy -- then she might work well for you. I did learn some very useful things about how to find well-fitting pants and shirts, and she played hardball with Macy's to get me some nice discounts. If I'd paid $100-200 for her services then this would be a 4-star review. But I paid $400 for someone who would help me craft a personal style, and that didn't happen. read more

I have worked with Beth on two occasions for a personal make over and style consultation. She gave me a make up consultation and a reworking of my very tired routine. I don't know how she does it but she really got that I wanted it to look better but still be effortless. She is great at applying make up and really knows her color palettes and skin tones. I saw Beth Alyse a year ago for a head-to-toe makeover. I asked my family for it for my birthday present (a milestone birthday to be sure.) I have had so many compliments afterward and continue to get them from people I only see about once a year or more. This makeover was one of the best things I've ever done for myself. I tell everyone they should do it. Since the makeover, I've had friends tell me I "look like a model" and "your skin is so beautiful it's like it's glowing." For the first time ever (sad but true) women ask me where I bought my shoes. Beth got me into some clothes that I would NEVER have picked out on my own but somehow really suit me. She understood my goals and carefully checked with each piece and didn't push me to try anything I was completely uncomfortable with but prompted me to stretch my comfort zone. When I was trying on clothes, outside the dressing room I overheard the seamstress say, "she has a really great figure." Wow. She found me shoes - with heels - that I can wear comfortably. I haven't worn heels in years due to sore feet from running. She taught me how to walk correctly in them and we only bought shoes I could wear while running to catch a bus. Really, we tried it in the store. I described to Gib the issues I have had with my hair styles in the past and he did such a wonderful job - I cried afterward. It looked *that* good. I went from blonde to brunette at Beth's suggestion and it really suits my complexion and made my eyes totally stand out. I went in with pretty low self-esteem and self-image in my looks and dress and came out feeling like a beautiful, shapely, and stylish woman. I've kept it up for a year and still love how I look. This is my first ever online review on anything. It was absolutely a great experience working with Beth. She is truly a master in makeover and very very sweet person. We instantly connected over the first phone conversation. I had been wanting to do something like this for years! I finally did, and it was worth the cost. I am willing to spend $400 on a fancy dinner, and there is nothing left the next day except for memories. With this, you get clothes that really work for your body and lifestyle and advice on style that will last forever. Beth Alyse is extremely professional and an excellent communicator. She talks to you to understand your lifestyle needs and personality. We spent about 6 hours together and I came out with tons of clothes that are way more interesting/sexy/professional looking than the black pants/black crew neck sweater that I had been wearing. The experience was also super efficient because she is so knowledgeable and attuned to your needs. If I had gone shopping by myself, I would have ended up getting overwhelmed, buying the same old things or buying things that I don't really like/don't look good on me. Beth Alyse is so nice and so fun, but when it comes to your makeover, she does not play! YOU feel like you're playing when you are with her -- and you are; you're playing with your style -- but she is totally serious about taking your natural qualities and enhancing/magnifying/accentuating and over-all beautifying you. GM's policy is top notch **customized** customer service. One can see from all these reviews that Beth can make over pretty much any aspect of your style, so all you have to do is let her know what you'd like to make your focus. I spent my session with her in the hair and make-up department of my life, but I'll definitely be going back for wardrobe/accessory help! The session started with Beth's amazingly effective (while concise) get-to-know-you. She wants to know why your style is what it is when you approach her, and she wants to know what is important to you, and what might be holding your style back... She is remarkably perceptive, sensitive, and respectful of how your style needs to be a reflection of your lifestyle and values -- it needs to fit --and she is very conscientious to not impose anything on you. But at the same time, she is there to push you like a style fitness trainer and bring out (show you!) your best. It is really a tremendous service and a total bargain for what you get in your time. Finally, there is no pressure to make any purchases. I did end up buying some of the make-up products that were shown to me, but I did so at my own leisure after my session. There was no "salesmanship" taking time from my session and it was clear that Beth was very discerning throughout the process--not willing to wait for make-up artists who were dragging their feet, and asserting herself to make sure I was getting to see as many different options as possible for my skin and my hair cut/style. After (and during) the application/experimentation process with make-up, we discussed my skin, and the qualities and uses of products available/suitable for what I wanted. Beth had literally encyclopedic knowledge about each line of products we tried and she had such great ideas for my hair and styling. Other reviews cover how great Beth is to work with (and I heartily concur), so I'll focus on the economics of it, since that was my big hesitation in hiring a stylist. (1) After Beth helped me rid my closet of dated/unflattering clothes, I'm sure I ended up donating around $2,000 in clothes to Valencia Thrift. Lesson: Don't waste your money buying things that don't look good on you. Instead, pay someone to tell you what works and what doesn't and you'll come out ahead. (2) I had several pieces in my closet that I loved but which didn't quite look right on me, so they sat around gathering dust. Beth showed me how to style them (remove the belt, button the top, wear a cardigan, etc) so they can enter frequent rotation. Bam, free new clothes! (3) On our final shopping jaunt, Beth discovered Bloomingdales was having this thing called a "presale." As someone who hates shopping, this meant nothing to me. But to a pro like Beth, it was gold. She showed me the ropes, and in the end I saved $1,000 on clothes/shoes we'd already bought. That more than covered her fees. I don't get on yelp to write reviews that often, but Beth Alyse merits a huge whopping absolutely positive review. And this is long review - but choosing a stylist is personal, and can be scary and I think so many people can benefit from consulting with Beth that I want to share the love.... Recently, Beth and I went through four different closets in my house and now I feel like I can go in grab anything, put it on, and work it. (As opposed to going in, seeing piles and piles of clothes and feeling like I have nothing to wear). It's a revelation. But let's start at the beginning: I'm not new to fashion - I'm a former model, and I still work in the design industry. But about 5 years ago, I moved out of the downtown area to the beach, got a mortgage, got a dog, got distracted. I was starting to feel out of touch with the latest fashion trends, and not as confident in my own choices. So I started searching for a style consultant. And I immediately thought of Beth. She has no artifice, and no filter - something you absolutely need in a stylist. I love to dig into how creative people think, and I got into Beth's head and heard all about what makes her feel really successful. I got a makeover with Beth before I started a new job in the beauty industry and it was amazing! Beth Alyse was so great. Her comments really helped me to feel great about myself and I really enjoyed spending the day with her. A friend of mine wanted to start dating, but had no idea what to do. (Not that I did, either.) After looking around, I booked both of us for a makeover with Beth Alyse of Guerrilla Makeovers. Beth was amazing. After a few difficult years dealing with lots on my plate, and twenty years removed from "dating", I needed both a confidence boost and a style update. I didn't think I was TOO far gone, but just didn't know. Beth was amazing in both aspects. My style wasn't bad, but the few tweaks Beth suggested made a huge difference, the biggest I think was updating my shoes. I can't tell you how many dates noticed and commented on my stylish shoes. The second item was a needed boost to my confidence. Beth spent as much time as needed listening to my story and getting to know me well enough that she could both make me over and make me feel confident in my updated look. I first did this makeover with Beth and my best friend for her 50th birthday - changed my life (8 yrs ago). I have kept in touch and met with Beth again on May 17th. She arranged a hair cut with Alec, another major change in my life. Short short hair which I have had more compliments on than I can count. I did the 6 hour private intensive with Beth - 2 times. I thought I'd only use her once, but I was wrong. I would actually recommend the Private Series - commit to at least 2 sessions. The first session is a lot of intro and is a bit intimidating. Also, I got a new hair cut and color... so that took time. The first time it was so new and the things she was having me wear was such a departure from anything I thought I could/should wear, I was hesitant to trust her. She spent a lot of time making me feel comfortable, figuring out my issues - explaining to me what would look good and why. As I bought the clothes I was thinking "I'm going to look ridiculous...." Then, I wore the clothes in real life all over Australia (vacation) - and felt really confident and got positive feedback. And I went back for more. The second trip was a lot easier and more FUN. She knew me already. I told her what I needed (more wintery stuff such as jeans and sweaters, accessories) and we did it. This time with the clothes, I just took her word that they looked good and went with it. I barely looked in the mirror. I can't recommend Beth's wedding stylist services highly enough. We started with an afternoon of dress shopping. She simplified the whole process and could tell before I even tried them on which dresses would work and which ones wouldn't, and had lots of tips for my bridesmaids too. Later, she did hair and makeup for a bridal portrait session. The pictures turned out great thanks to the wonderful styling. She listened to exactly what I wanted, put her own unique spin on it and left me with the natural radiance I'd hoped for. She was even on hand to do last minute touch ups on my wedding day. Brought my two children 7 and 17 for two days of Make-overs with Sarah (who is the absolute best!) They both got "Rock-Star" make-overs! Sara is amazing.
