The grunion run is a natural phenomenon in Southern California, in which these little, silvery fish wash themselves up on shore to partake in one giant orgy when the moon enters certain phases in the spring and summer months. Everyone should see it at least once, if only to partake in a bit of fishy voyeurism. It's a real marvel right here on our shores. The females come up on shore, burrow tail-first into the sand, and proceed to lay their eggs. It's the males' jobs to wrap around them and squirt their milt into the hole and fertilize the roe. During open season, barring that you're a minor or have obtained the proper fishing permit, you're allowed to take what grunion you catch solely with your bare hands. Using any sort of implement is illegal. The nearby Cabrillo Marine Aquarium hosts teaching events on certain nights of the run, when they believe there will be more fish. It's $5 for adults, $1 for kids. You can walk around the aquarium at night, check out the exhibits, and they show an old film about the grunion's spawning ritual. Sometimes they distribute jars of fertilized eggs that are ready to hatch. They pour sea water in, and you have to vigorously shake the jar (simulating sea waves) to help the eggs along. Eventually they pop from the shell and you see the little fry swimming around the jar. You just helped in the birthing process of an extraordinarily fascinating creature. After a time, the aquarium staff take groups out to the shore to wait for the run to start. You have to stand still and quiet, without flashing any lights. Some experts believe the grunion send scout fish to the beach to check for predators and ideal conditions. If there was too much noise or light, the chances of a large run are slim. You have to wait for the go-ahead from aquarium employees before you can turn on your flashlights or try to catch them (pending that it's open season). Since it is a public beach, it's completely optional to attend the ticketed Meet the Grunion festivities. You could otherwise just show up at the beach when the groups head out to it. I've seen the grunion come to other places like Seal Beach and Santa Monica, near the pier, but in no greater numbers than at Cabrillo. The California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife has a list of dates the grunion MIGHT appear on here: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/grunionschedule.asp

Went on Sunday, July 9. As we read in some previous posts they started coming out around the second hour. People need to learn not to capture the scout fish. It would be nice to see the spawning process, but people won't wait for them to bury themselves to see that happen. We caught about 17 and released them back in. Our kids had a ton of fun and want to come back. Best free fishing trip ever!

Harbor, it just does not give one that true feeling of Surf Lifestyle. There are really two parts of this beach. There is the North-Facing side that is lined by the San Pedro Cliffs. Cliffs that are quickly falling into the sea. On this side, you can view houses that are barely in place and teetering on the cliff. If it was me living there, I would be very nervous. On this side of the beach is the more open, majestic space of Cabrillo Beach. Here the waves freely crash on the shore and you are just a short walk from the tide pools of the marine reserve, which I highly recommend visiting. You just have to be careful of the homeless and those using drugs like Crack over in that section. Because I have seen a few scary situations unfold. The other part of Cabrillo Beach is where most people congregate. This section is in direct view of the the ships that travel in and out of the L.A. Harbor. This area holds the main swimming area that has a buoyed safety rope strung across the outside reaches of the swimming area. This is where most people swim and enjoy the water. Due to this area of the beach being enclosed by the harbor breakwater, there are virtually no waves in this section. The water seems much more stagnate here. Thus, you really miss the feeling of the natural flowing ocean. Overall, though perhaps not the beauty one expects from the SoCal Oceanside, this is a unique contribution to the California Coastline.

I usually park outside where parking is free. Once I walk onto the grounds, I turn right and check to see if the tide is low. There's a great tide pool on the other side of the bridge. Then, I walk on the sidewalk through the small park where people are gathered to picnic or hold a wedding ceremony. You'll notice a significant amount of ground squirrels in their burrowed holes or running up a tree. The restrooms are large with many stalls. There are also multiple showers to wash the sand off. I enjoy walking down the pier, all the way to the end. There are always people fishing. Dogs are allowed, leashed of course. You run into many individuals walking their dog on the sidewalk. By the way, there's also a ping pong table.

Started off someplace else and just continued on to see and stop off at all the locations nearby. There's a good amount of parking along the street as well as some along the neighborhood. The park itself is overly big but it does have a good size to it. The nice massive trees lined the area. There's a nice little path along the sides where it looks out to the Pacific Ocean and the cliffs below. It was low tide so seeing the tide pools was quite beautiful. Along the path are little covered area which are label by number. Like mini covered patio with a table and seat. They too all looks out to the water. I believe there was a total of 8 seating enclosures along the path. Also, loads of squirrels roaming the place like it's nothing. They are not scared of you so be warn. Clearly there were signs not to feed the wildlife but there was people out with bags of peanuts feeding them. In the middle of the park is a little stage area and with benches. I'm sure they have theatre in the park happening if that's set up. And a playground around the side of it. There's also a lighthouse which is a focal point of the park. Situated right in the middle which now double as a museum. It's a cute park that I never knew about. Decent size for picnics or a nice wander around. The view alone along the path was spectacular. The cliff edge is dangerous so practice caution. Common sense, but they also had signs posted about suicides. It's a cute neighborhood park as along the front are homes right across the street.

Though the county took an epically long time to fix it, the street has since been repaired, but they chose not to reopen the street. Before, Paseo Del Mar was accessible to Western Avenue. Like many of the neighbors, I am glad that they chose to keep it closed. In the past, people would speed down this street with little disregard for those walking, running, or biking. Lots of people use this route to run or walk and also walk their dogs. Most people are friendly and will wave or say good morning as they go by. There are 2 little mini parks along this path that people can relax at, in addition to going down to Point Fermin park, where the famous lighthouse is located. I've seen some people sit and have picnics or sit in their cars and enjoy the views. I've also seen some of the neighbors have a house party and people overflow to the parks. The sunrises and sunsets are amazing and at times, you can hear the water crashing below. Many of the homes over here are beautiful and some are in need of renovations, but either way the eclecticness of the neighborhood comes together beautifully. For the most part, people take good care of their homes. There are some losers who park and smoke weed right here and try to look all innocent as you go by, but it's reeking from their car, so you know what they're doing. So yes, this area does attract some riff-raff, but for the most part, I've never had an issue working out over here whether it's daylight or night. It's a pretty safe area and the police often drive back and forth down here and throughout the neighborhoods.

Review #945 2026-009…read more I visited Angels Gate Park with my kids & friend after stopping by to see the Korean Bell of Friendship (refer to Review #944). We didn't see the whole park, just went to the playground (that's down the slope & east of the bell) for the kids to run off some excessive energy before heading home. According to the City of L.A. Department of Recreations & Parks, AGP is open daily from 6:30 AM - 10:00 PM, & parking lot hours are from sunrise - sunset. Hmmm... what happens if you're there after 8:00 PM? Does this mean you can't use Point Fermin Parking Lot? Other reviewers mentioned there's plenty of street parking; I have no idea where since we used the practically empty lot that's just north of the bell. This park has lots to offer: playground, picnic tables, walking paths & hiking trails, & amazing ocean views, with walking access to: Korean Bell of Friendship, Fort MacArthur Military Museum, Point Fermin Lighthouse, Point Fermin Park, Angels Gate Park, Joan Milke Flores Park, & Wilders Addition Park. A picnic permit is required to reserve picnic tables & areas for organized events/birthday parties. Dogs are allowed but must be leashed at all times; any defecation must be immediately removed. No smoking/vaping or alcohol at any time. I probably won't revisit this park unless I'm going to see the Korean Bell of Friendship or want to fly a kite. This is probably one of the best parks in addition to the other ones within walking distance; it was extremely windy for on a Friday late afternoon. Remember to wear a jacket... brrr!
