Had a great time at Hey Rookie Pool! Clean. Great way to exercise and enjoy the California sun!

A beautiful day at the pool. Recreational swim from 1-3:30. Wasn't crowded on the day I went. I'd go again for sure!

Review #845 2025-017…read more George Mannon Aquatic Center (aka Torrance Aquatic Center) opened on Saturday, 03/03/18 with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. Enter on the driveway between Honda Service Center & Starbucks, the aquatic center is between Torrance Elementary School & Shery High School. Eric Trujillo, former North HS student & design committee member, designed the facility's logo; the "Shield Marquee" is displayed at the entrance. The $15M project was made possible by Bond Measure U funds (approved in 11/2014), so this state-of-the-art pool has been long awaited by the community; yeah, I voted for this, not knowing my LO will be using the aquatic center 7 years later. She made her high school's JV swim team in her freshman year for the 2024-2025 school year with swim season held between mid-02/2025 - mid-04/2025. It's awe-inspiring to watch her & teammates race in this beautiful facility! The aquatic center has a 60-meter Olympic size competition & warm-up pools (both partially heated by solar panels) with 10 competition & 12 warm-up lanes, 600-seat spectator bleachers, separate lockers for TUSD's 4 high schools (Torrance, North, South, & West HS), & visiting teams changing room. There are showers available, but I'm told they're not working. While designed to allow 2 sports to be played simultaneously, her school competition schedule has not calendared concurrent competitions. The District Aquatic Programs include both water polo & swim, but no diving, in this proper world-class competitive facility. Upon entering, the far left pool is for water polo & swim meets, with middle & right pools are for practices. I thought I saw lessons for the younger set, but I could be wrong? According to USA Swimming, Swim Torrance is a local swim club that uses GMAC for training. Her team's locker room is 1 of 2 schools that's next to the competition pool. Time pads are a bit wonky since it's been 6 years, so H relies on the volunteer timers to record her times/splits. I wished they thought of building a snack shack by the NE corner near the water fountains, instead of using tents & foldable tables to set-up the snack stand. It's extra time needed by the parent volunteers for set-up & tear-down. The parking lot ginormous & is used by the aquatic center & also the adjacent baseball field. No diamond (prime) spaces by the entrance, but the circular driveway makes it easy for drop-offs & pick-ups unless the driver just parks their car, blocking others. \(`0´)/ The spectator bleachers have shade structures, but coverage is limited in the later afternoon/when the sun is setting unless you're sitting in the top/back row. We have to give props to The Plunge for their youth swim lessons to get her where she is today.

There is overhead coverage for the seating, but if it's the wrong time of day, you'll definitely be getting blasted by the sun straight in your face. We were able to get roof access to stream our event which was nice and have plenty of room for large tents, team seating and more. They also have nice meeting rooms where we tend to serve food to our athletes or hold team meetings.

Overall, these needs were met by the Cabrillo Youth Center. Upon arrival, we set up our tents in designated field areas very close to the waterfront. While the "beach" is inside LA Harbor, I was generally pleased with the cleanliness of the water. No, it's not Catalina-clear, but the camp is adjacent to a wetlands preserve and the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, so the water activities (which include kayaking, rowboats, and canoeing) are enjoyed in a designated area over a beautiful eel grass bed. Wish I could have dragged a lure through here for some bay bass, but didn't manage to do so. Swimming is enjoyed in the pool on site, and all visitors must take a BSA swim test to determine which activities they can enjoy. Four laps of the pool-- three on your stomach and one on your back... then float on your back for about a minute. If you pass, you're given a blue wristband: clear for all activities; if you're a beginner or non-swimmer, (red and white wristbands, respectively) you must be accompanied by a blue-band to go out on any watercraft. The camp also features a craft center, a mess hall, a Scout store, and flush toilets/restrooms. Showers are outdoor beach-style to get the sand off your body, but really, you're probably only here for a day or two. The amphitheater area is used for orientation meetings, and the camp fire. Being a "working camp," the visitors are responsible for a lot-- keeping the restrooms clean, hauling out trash to the dumpsters, and running the campfire. ... all good stuff for kids working on being more responsible. A lot of lifeguards here to support the boating activities, keep an eye on the pool, and running f swim tests. At night the gates to parking lot are locked, and the entire perimeter is fenced right down to the water, so pretty safe, despite its harbor location. The buddy system is utilized for kids at all times. A red trolley offers free rides to the aquarium, the USS IOWA, and several museums nearby. A quick walk to the aquarium is neat to break up the day, and a slightly longer walk takes you down to the tide pools just outside the breakwater. Afternoon sundowner breezes make kite flying a genuine option. Overall, we had a great time camping here. No open flames means charcoal and propane cooking is OK, and the mess hall offers a meal plan if you'd rather not endure the hassle of bringing your own stuff. This is not oceanfront cabanas and towel service, kids... but for the price and the experience, this is a nice little camp nestled in the midst of an active marina. A gem indeed.
