(The firemen responded within minutes and the fire was only on the porch as far as I could see.) This was a small business with affordable produce and snacks. It was a good grab-and-go store that served the neighborhood for over 30 years. I would swing by 2-3 times a week because it's a much better alternative to pricey Whole Foods down the street. The staff were always kind and helpful. I wish I had seen or heard something that night. I don't even want to believe it. Why even do this? Now the last best thing in Roosevelt is gone. Where do we go now for groceries? How many more businesses do we need to lose in this neighborhood?

Meanwhile, at the same time, a white guy brought his dog into the store, despite the plainly visible "no pets" sign, and no one reacted at all. As progressive and inclusive as Seattle pretends to be, many people from minority backgrounds - both lifelong residents and newer arrivals - can recount numerous experiences of less-overt (but still very real) forms of bigotry here. Seems my girlfriend's experience at the Green Lake PCC can be added to the long, long list of similar episodes of prejudice.
