We have been back and forth between both of their sites (Katella and 7th Street) because of work/life logistics, and both have been such a privilege to be a part of. I am a teacher, so I have a lot of opinions and a pretty good understanding of best practices for young kids -- and LSH is just so, so wonderful. Throughout our time there, I have watched them lovingly and patiently support so many different types of kids, meeting them where they are and helping them grow and blossom into wonderful big kids ready to head off to school. The early foundations of love, exploration, choice, and play that they have provided for my sons are something I know I will be thankful for all my life. Every time I walk in, there is an amazing setup waiting for the kids. It honestly looks like they are preparing for an open house every day because everything is so thoughtfully set up -- but it's not an open house they are preparing for, it's just another day of play with our kids. That says so much about the care and intention they put into every single day. I have also had the unique opportunity to be in and out of LSH multiple times throughout the day when I was picking up one of my kiddos for speech. No matter what time I walked in, I saw the same thing -- happy, engaged kids playing, exploring, creating, and being lovingly supported by their teachers. It truly is a picture of what early childhood education should look like, and I feel so incredibly lucky that both of my kids had the opportunity to spend these important early years there and build such a wonderful foundation for what comes next. I know when I was trying to make the difficult decision to send my little one off to daycare, I read SO many reviews. I didn't know what to do or who to trust with my babies -- but LSH was the place for us. I know I have already used the word "amazing" multiple times in this review, but honestly, that is the word that keeps popping into my head as I write this during our last week at LSH before my little one heads off to TK. The teachers are wonderful, the Reggio Emilia philosophy is amazing, and from my experience, your kiddos could not be in more loving or capable hands. I recently moved to Long Beach from the East Coast…read more I visited my girlfriend and went to Bayshore Playground and saw the coop. It was during the pandemic and I took my son out of school because virtual learning was night right for our family. So after a year with 3 young kids at home and home schooling, I couldn't wait to get my youngest girls in preschool. Preschool On the Beach. With a Playground? What could be cooler than that? There is one indoor classroom with books and puzzles and it's own child sized toilet and sink. There are 3 sheds full of bikes, scooters, tunnels, hula hoops, hockey sticks, basketballs and hoop, dollhouse, plenty of play toys, a sensory table, blocks, art supplies etc. They meet Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9am-12pm. Parent volunteers go 30 min early and help set up fences around our area to ensure safety. During the pandemic it was an outdoor classroom and we did not have one case at our school. We set up the outdoor classroom with rugs and learning materials, a play dough station, an office area with markers, crayons, stamps, stencils etc, a doll house area, a creative play area (changes each week), lunch tables, art easel area, sensory table and block/toy truck/ play animal area each day. With ~15 parents, this requires 3 parent volunteers each day. Most parents work every other week but if you have more children, you are there weekly. The day starts with play time in the bike yard (there's plenty of bikes and outdoor activities for all; Wednesday's they can bring in their own bikes and helmets). Then it's circle time with Ms. Cori, whom the kids all adore. She goes over the calendar, days of the week, sings songs in 7 different languages. Then it's bike yard time again while the snack parent prepares a snack for the students. Then the kids all wash hands (we are very good with hand sanitizer and keeping clean) and enjoy their snack. Then it's free play in our fenced in outdoor school. We clean up toys and end in the playground. There is a lunch bunch for the older children where they pack a lunch and stay until 2pm for an additional fee. The 3 parents each have a specific job for the day -bike yard, snack or bathroom. There is a snack parent each week that prepares the snack all 3 days. We make sure to make notes of any student with allergies or sensitivities. There are monthly field trips (fire station, el dorado, bolsa chica, aquarium, library etc) which are paid from by fundraising (this year we made cocoa bombs at holiday time and sold sweets at the Naples boat canal show). Monthly meetings are held at 7pm on the first Thursday of each month. Attendance is required by one parent or guardian at the meetings and also school cleanups 2x a year. We also have a rainy day school for when we can't be outdoors due to the weather. My girls love their teacher, their friends and their school. It's definitely more play based. No worksheets here. However they do occasional seasonal crafts. It definitely is a bit of work for the parents but I think it's worth it as my girls will have great memories. Definitely nice to find other families the same age after the pandemic and after moving to a new area. We all look out for each other's kids. We celebrated Chinese New Year this year with a lions dance festival in the bike yard (the bike yard is only allowed for use of our children at the moment). And we have some fun trips planned for the end of the year.

I was so surprised to see that it's true! The parents are truly there for one another and for the kids. Bayshore is so much more than just a school. We were getting ready to say goodbye to our in home nanny and had started to tour a couple of schools that left me....almost depressed? I was not sure I was going to find the right place that was accepting children under the 2 year mark that I felt comfortable with. When you have to return to work and trust another with your baby who is not fully communicating it is serious business. I had no intention to settle for anything that was just OK. When I walked into BSCC, taking in all of the bright rooms, clean space, interactive outdoor area and the ocean view I instantly felt a peace I had been searching for. Could I attend? Haha. I told Ms. Anna I would be right back with my son so they could meet, we could sign the paperwork and enroll immediately. Cut to now- he is almost 3 and I couldn't feel more lucky. Ms Erika and Ms Michelle (affectionally called Tita and Mimi) love my child like their own. My son started out nervous as most children and now he tries to call his teachers on the weekends from his toy phone to hang out. We get compliments on his vocabulary and sharing skills when he is out and he is also really getting down potty training! They have been so patient with him and give me great feedback. He has moved into Ms Dora's class where I'm sure he will continue to flourish. Outside of the regular curriculum the school offers fun activities such as Soccer Shots and Summer Friday water play where my kid always has a blast. They also have thoughtful events for the parents like their recent school wide art show, Father's day donuts with dad/ Mother's day flowers and coffee (complete with photo station). We only spent a short time here but we are looking forward to the graduation ceremony they will be hosting for the kids going to kindergarten next year.
