After a failed attempt at another preschool, I was struggling to find a place that not only my oldest daughter felt comfortable going to but I felt comfortable dropping her off to everyday. When my youngest turned two, there was no doubt in my mind that she would attend school with her sister. Both of my daughters have thrived not only socially, but also academically. I appreciate that Vanessa keeps me in the loop on anything that is happening at the school but also happening with my girls. Although my oldest daughters time is coming to an end and she will be starting Kindergarten in the fall, I am confident that she has all of the tools needed for her to continue to be successful. I know my youngest will thrive the same way in learning that her sister has and now with another baby coming soon, it's no question where he or she will go once they are of age.

The teachers are all wonderful, and they always have great activities for the kids to go and get involved in. I've toured other preschools a few years ago, and most of them felt like it was just babysitting - when I asked them how the day was like, they just gave vague responses. Why I chose St. Paul's is that Rachel, the amazing Program Director, explained their curriculum (and they use actual books) along with what the kids would learn and go over. They also encourage lots of play and have centers for the kids. They also have a wonderful outdoor play area and play structure. They take into consideration too if it's too hot to be outside, then they'll have activities indoors. I also like that they have chapel once a week and get a really good Christian foundation. The teachers and everyone at the school is so attentive and friendly. They all really care for the kids. I can't say anything but good things about this school!

Please Read!! For the safety of your preschoolers...I am sorry that I have to share such negative…read morenews on this program but we are in UTTER SHOCK & anguish. This has really scared our family. This concerns our youngest of four children so not our first rodeo. On our child's third morning of this "preschool program" aged just 3 years old at Ready, Set Go! Los Alamitos Recreation Center. My husband arrived EARLY to pick up to find our child unsupervised literally 10ft from the cars!!! Our child had managed to walk out of the unsupervised door down two ramps towards the cars unnoticed!! No one, no teacher or parent stopped him!! If my husband hadn't arrived early I don't know what... our child could have been hit by a car or even taken by a stranger. My husband tried to get the attention of the teachers but they were chatting on the deck area... he left in shock and was just relieved he had our child... together we tried to process the situation and called the administrator... She said it's never happened before, our child must have followed one of the parents out!!! Making it sound like it was his fault, and we can have a full REFUND & PULL our child. They "fully understand" was their response. They also informed us of recent changes to the pick up process of just letting kids out on deck as they feel the parents we're more likely to sign a sign out sheet! The first priority is the sign out sheet not the security or the safety of the young kids!! There is zero control who enters and walks around inside from what I have seen. Our child was entrusted to them but left unnoticed on his own ALONE!! They do not check parents or people picking up, they would literally release the child to anyone if they waved at them and then took the child. The paperwork you fill out for pick up authorization is worthless... I even wrote an extra note on ours to especially watch our child because they are so quiet and could wander off from the playground at play time. I would never dream of this at pick up. They clearly never read anything!! SHOCKING!! Further... No follow up call from the teacher or administrator, nothing, only us contacting them... AND!! SHOCKINGLY after some phone calls they are under no licensing laws!! No licensing or accreditation or anything, totally on city management! They are not bound by any licensing or requirements!! They are NOT A PRESCHOOL OR DAYCARE EVEN THOUGH THEY CALL THEMSELVES A PRESCHOOL ONLINE and social media! They basically go under the radar as they class themselves as a "pre school program Rec class" So no jurisdiction under state laws or licensing and after following up to check on any city laws/licensing. I have just been informed by the city office they are owned by the city, non-profit so they are exempt from licensing laws. Total liability... This day and age this place needs a whole new security system & process in place if it is to keep your kids safe! It needs cameras (we were informed there are none). No parents or anyone other than staff should be allowed beyond the front desk especially at pick up! There should be one staff member recognizing the specific parent, theparental requirements of signing the list to the specific child in front of staff member And the other staff member bringing forth the specific child and handing them off one at a time to the parents at the desk. Not a free for all...There is no controlled environment at this time by staff and staff being nice is not in question they are very pleasant but safety is severely in question. Is it sheer dumb luck that something bad hasn't happened before! Under no circumstances should that door be opened and the children be left to leave and find their own parents at that young age. All the schools do not allow this till after kindergarten at least! So why is this happening for three-year-olds! Thank you for your time during our phone call this morning. As discussed, the following is the link to the Department of Social Services website which identifies the exemption for non-profit programs (i.e., some community centers as well as most parks and recreation programs) that offer recreation services: https://www.cdss.ca.gov/inforesources/child-care-licensing/resources-for-parents. Please feel free to contact me if I can be of any further assistance.

I recently moved to Long Beach from the East Coast…read more I visited my girlfriend and went to Bayshore Playground and saw the coop. It was during the pandemic and I took my son out of school because virtual learning was night right for our family. So after a year with 3 young kids at home and home schooling, I couldn't wait to get my youngest girls in preschool. Preschool On the Beach. With a Playground? What could be cooler than that? There is one indoor classroom with books and puzzles and it's own child sized toilet and sink. There are 3 sheds full of bikes, scooters, tunnels, hula hoops, hockey sticks, basketballs and hoop, dollhouse, plenty of play toys, a sensory table, blocks, art supplies etc. They meet Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9am-12pm. Parent volunteers go 30 min early and help set up fences around our area to ensure safety. During the pandemic it was an outdoor classroom and we did not have one case at our school. We set up the outdoor classroom with rugs and learning materials, a play dough station, an office area with markers, crayons, stamps, stencils etc, a doll house area, a creative play area (changes each week), lunch tables, art easel area, sensory table and block/toy truck/ play animal area each day. With ~15 parents, this requires 3 parent volunteers each day. Most parents work every other week but if you have more children, you are there weekly. The day starts with play time in the bike yard (there's plenty of bikes and outdoor activities for all; Wednesday's they can bring in their own bikes and helmets). Then it's circle time with Ms. Cori, whom the kids all adore. She goes over the calendar, days of the week, sings songs in 7 different languages. Then it's bike yard time again while the snack parent prepares a snack for the students. Then the kids all wash hands (we are very good with hand sanitizer and keeping clean) and enjoy their snack. Then it's free play in our fenced in outdoor school. We clean up toys and end in the playground. There is a lunch bunch for the older children where they pack a lunch and stay until 2pm for an additional fee. The 3 parents each have a specific job for the day -bike yard, snack or bathroom. There is a snack parent each week that prepares the snack all 3 days. We make sure to make notes of any student with allergies or sensitivities. There are monthly field trips (fire station, el dorado, bolsa chica, aquarium, library etc) which are paid from by fundraising (this year we made cocoa bombs at holiday time and sold sweets at the Naples boat canal show). Monthly meetings are held at 7pm on the first Thursday of each month. Attendance is required by one parent or guardian at the meetings and also school cleanups 2x a year. We also have a rainy day school for when we can't be outdoors due to the weather. My girls love their teacher, their friends and their school. It's definitely more play based. No worksheets here. However they do occasional seasonal crafts. It definitely is a bit of work for the parents but I think it's worth it as my girls will have great memories. Definitely nice to find other families the same age after the pandemic and after moving to a new area. We all look out for each other's kids. We celebrated Chinese New Year this year with a lions dance festival in the bike yard (the bike yard is only allowed for use of our children at the moment). And we have some fun trips planned for the end of the year.

When we did the initial walk through at MGH, we informed Michelle of my son's frustration and…read morebehavior issues and asked her how they would address this at school, she confidently told me she would take him outside to diffuse him. We also had numerous formal and informal meetings with Christine and Karinna, who always said they wanted to work with us. We were told we had to get outside help from a doctor, and when we told them it would take a while to see results (per the psychologist), they reiterated they were willing to help. After being called to be picked up after an hour of class on his 4th full day of school, I spoke with Christine and she told me what happened. I also called the director, Heather, to discuss our options. Christine didn't mention anything about Simon not being allowed to attend school anymore without extra help provided by his family, nor did Heather. On Tuesday morning, I sent Heather an email with tips of how to diffuse my son, thinking the teachers could use it as a guideline in helping to steer him in the right direction. Twenty minutes prior to school starting, she called to tell me that it wasn't possible for my son to get any more one on one from the teachers and since our nanny couldn't be at the school until 10am, the staff felt they weren't safe with my son in class without the help. Why Heather didn't call me Monday or even earlier Tuesday morning to let me know he was not able to attend that day still baffles me. Heather said she was waiting to talk to me at the site, but that would have only resulted in her turning us away as I had my daughter with me that morning and wouldn't have been able to stay to help.  I got my so ready that morning, we packed his lunch together, and I gave him the pep talk about Karinna not being in class, but got him excited for music class that day. If I wouldn't have sent that email, Heather wouldn't have called at all and we would have arrived at the school only for her to have told us the news in front of my son. How do you think he would have felt about that? I'm surprised that the director of a place that regards itself as fostering confidence in young children would reject a child to their face. The website states, "studies prove that the relationship between a caretaker and a child is more secure when it's longer. It supports the social and emotional development of a child. Whereas, frequent change in approach or caretakers can cause suffering and early depression in children." Heather and her staff gave my son one full day the first week and three full days the second week, calling us to pick him up on what would have been his fifth day at MGH.  If the email I had sent Tuesday morning were suggestions from an actual psychologist, would they have called to tell me you couldn't give him one on one attention to implement the strategies from a doctor? The meeting on Friday with the teachers suggested otherwise, as we were told they were ready to work with whatever care we found once an assessment was made. Christine informed me that she would have to call to have my son picked up from school if the kids felt unsafe. According to her, this happened for the first time on Monday even though he was called to be picked up three prior days of school. No one informed me he wouldn't be able to return without my nanny or a parent in the classroom after this one incident of him kicking in the direction of a child. I was under the impression that we would have to come get him if it happened again, but not that he couldn't return. The first I heard of this was twenty minutes before the start of class on Tuesday. I was caught of guard and it was very unprofessional. I am so glad this did not end up happening in front of my four year old son, as the director originally intended. I understand my so was not easy and required a lot of one on one. He has never been in anything full time all day. He has never been in a Montessori setting. I believe he was not given a fair chance to succeed. He was not even given an entire week. The MHG program is more geared toward families with Montessori backgrounds, with kids that are ready to do their work without much assistance. This should have been conveyed to us before we signed on, as we were open about his past behavior and experience. I hope in the future you are up front with parents regarding any children that may have special needs or behavioral problems.

We started researching early preschool for Maya late last year. We were so thrilled to find Newport…read moreAcademy, which is also right in our neighborhood. Maya started attending just before she turned 2 in January of this year and goes 2 days per week. We started with the Friday playgroup in December. Annie and the other teacher guides made Maya's transition as smooth as possible, although it was naturally tough for us to separate at first. It didn't take long for Maya to love her school and teachers! The Outside Space. Newport Academy is just the perfect sized place of learning that we were looking for - there are many teacher guides for the students, and the school has 15 kids. The overall set-up is so great: enclosed playground with the standards like playhouses, swings, a slide, vintage tricycles; plus things to stimulate imagination like a DIY mud kitchen, cardboard boxes, and a shaded reading nook. Daily, the teachers set up activities in this play yard for the kids, like water play, painting, play dough, and other sensory activities. The Inside Space. Annie has created a serene and beautiful environment. There is a cool playhouse, tree house, and numerous sensory and learning opportunities. The school is Montessori-style learning, so they have these trays of "work" activities, which they take and utilize, then put back. We are impressed by how the teachers help guide these toddlers, aged 18 months ~ 3 years, to engage, focus, learn, develop a routine, listen, and be creative in this wonderful space. How they keep 15 toddlers calm and orderly inside is amazing, as keeping just 1 calm is often challenging! Overall, you can feel the love and passion behind Newport Academy, that has been created and evolved over 20 years. It is a living space and constantly changes. We have seen so many positive developments in Maya since she started attending - from teaching us songs and dances, sitting and focusing on her "work, " interacting with other children, and her physical abilities like climbing and confidence in trying new things. We are happy to be part of this community.
