In May of last year, after days of rain, my basement flooded. After reading a significant number of negative reviews of Groundworks, I decided maybe my situation would be different and gave them a call. It wasn't, and unfortunately, I continue to deal with the effects of hiring them today, nearly 18 months later! Shortly after their salesperson came to the house, I signed the contract to have them install their AquaStop WallSeal and BasementGutter, which would essentially create an interior gutter around about 70% of the perimeter of my basement. They began by removing the bottom half of the drywall and cutting the sole plate connected to the studs (and many of the studs), neither of which I was informed of during the walk through or listed within the contract. This added significant expense when rebuilding the drywall as new plates needed to be secured to the floor. Once removed, demolition of the actual concrete began, and as they jackhammered around the perimeter, they broke pieces of the marble around my basement fireplace and tile flooring near the bar. Unfortunately, the tile isn't sold any longer and I just have a gap now that I haven't figured out how to clean up. The most frustrating part (of the demo) was coming home on the first day of demolition to see custom built-ins in the basement destroyed, despite the fact there is a walk-through and electrical room housing the sump pump that allows for access behind the built-ins! This was the largest unexpected cost I incurred- until the radon issues began. The Groundworks crew does not care about your property. While the demolition proved frustrating and unexpectedly costly, the primary reason I'm writing this review is to inform anyone interested in installing their products to research and determine the impact on their home's Radon. About six months ago, I noticed my existing radon mitigation system making a funny noise so I called a local company (with whom I've been very happy). They informed me of the fundamental incompatibility of radon mitigation systems with the type of system Groundworks installed. What I learned is that by installing a gutter system in your basement, by opening up the foundation you're also allowing the radon to escape without obstruction. Compounding the release of the radon, by removing the concrete, you remove the pressure required for radon mitigation system to work. Importantly, the radon company knew before even testing that the radon level would be high since they knew that installing these systems releases radon. I'm extremely confident Groundworks knows this, too. To address the elevated radon, the first remedy was to install backer rod (basically thin foam pieces) into the part of the basement perimeter that could still be accessed (having already recarpeted the finished parts of the basement). Upon testing, this lowered the numbers only slightly. With the numbers still elevated, I had the radon company install a larger, industrial fan in place of my standard residential. Unfortunately, while this did lower the numbers significantly, radon was still reading over the levels (4pcl) needed. I contacted Groundworks when I realized they caused the radon issue. Eventually, they sent a field manager to review the situation and take pictures. Unfortunately, that was months ago, and despite being told I'd receive a follow-up within a couple of days, I still have yet to get a response, let alone sufficient resolution. At this point, I'm likely to need to install a second system on the other side of my basement to build enough pressure to remove the radon. If this fails, I'm told I'll need to rip up the carpet to allow access around the perimeter where the system was installed and fill in the system Groundworks installed last year. Yes, I'm beyond upset and extremely frustrated with Groundworks, their crew, their management, and their lack of ownership; I'm certain they know their product leads to radon problems and have chosen not to disclose this. Yet most importantly, potential customers need to know this before (ignoring the other poor reviews and) choosing to work with them.

D.Masonry - The scary pillar Before-and-After. (1930's "clinker" brick is supposed to look uneven)

And I called one other company for a second bid. David showed up in time for our appointment, and his explanation of the problem (80 year old mortar in our brick house was falling out). The previous owner had gotten some of it repaired. That mortar was failing, too. I was particularly concerned because one pillar that carries a heavy load was cracked so badly (see photo) that you could see daylight through it from top to bottom. David explained why it had failed, and how the repair work someone had done years ago made matters worse. His bid that was about the same price as the other firm, but his explanation -- and the bid itself -- were so clear that D. Masonry was my obvious choice. He provided me with proof of insurance, too, a request the other company ignored. They lived up to my high expectations. Watching them work, I realized that tuck pointing is a highly skilled craft, practically an art form. They took the time to mix and try a range of mortar colors. With their help, we selected the one they advised. Now that the new mortar has completely dried, I can see it is a perfect color match. The pillar I was so nervous about? They elaborately jacked up and stabilized things, so they could remove the pillar, which they disassembled completely, laying out all the bricks (with all the old mortar removed), so they could put them back exactly as they were, only sturdy now, and good as new. Masonry repairs -- done well -- simply disappear when the work is done, right? As long as I own this house, my gratitude for this job-well-done will live on.

Adkins Masonry - The update!

One of our biggest projects to tackle was the fireplace. We envisioned not only keeping it wood burning but making the room feel less like a cave and more bright, cozy and welcoming. We contacted several fireplace vendors and found one that helped with the pieces, but for our actual project we were told "you need a mason." So to the search engines we went. After talking and meeting with a few and getting some quotes, we chose to go with Adkins Masonry and are glad we did. From the beginning, Tommy was fantastic to work with. It's clear through conversation that he's passionate about what he does, and equally clear that he's very talented after looking though his portfolio. In the grand scheme of things, our project was pretty minor compared to a lot of jobs he does, but he treated us as if ours was the most important one whenever we met or discussed it. It was about a year in the making. We had an initial meeting to suss out our vision and come up with a plan. Then my partner and I took our sweet time to make sure we found the right natural stone for the look we were going for. We then started the demo, which was done incrementally as our project evolved over time. It took a while for the stone and hearth to come in, but once it arrived, Tommy was able to really get going. Since we were keeping it wood burning, and since Tommy is a mason, we ended up using brick rather than wood to frame it out which helped insulate it and make it safer. He also placed insulation over the vent, which did not exist on the original, to help protect the electrical and cable wires that ran behind it. We debated putting the TV over the mantel vs off to the side, and we ended up running power for both options to future proof it. Once the brick was laid and dried, he and his crew installed the concrete mantel and the giant hearth (which I cannot even begin to tell you how heavy it was). Next, he began to overlay the stone, first mortared into place, and then grouted to finish with the right color. It was really crazy to watch how each step completely transformed the project again and again. We are so happy with the way it turned out. The room still has a ways to go (floors, trim and oh, furniture) but I cannot recommend Tommy and Adkins Masonry highly enough. He was a complete pleasure to work with.

Chase put the bid together on the spot, while thoroughly explaining each line item. There was no attempt to upsell or pressure to make an immediate decision. HomeStrong's bid turned out to be the lowest price, had a great warranty, and included everything we needed. I got a good vibe based on the professional manner in which the bid was prepared. I had a unique issue that required a structural engineer evaluation, which was included in the bid. Lalo and Daner arrived as scheduled to do the crawl space and had to alter the original plan a bit. They completed the project in two days (original estimate was three) and everything was left clean. They were friendly, polite and seemed to genuinely care about making sure I was satisfied. After accepting the bid, I did have to reach out to Chase a couple of times when there delays in communication. He was able to get things moving quickly.
