In May this year, I relocated from Austin, TX to Roanoke; ATX finally became so prohibitively…read moreexpensive (like, $2K and up for a cracker box 450 sq ft Studio apartment--even over $6K/month if it's labeled "Luxury") that the offer of affordable housing from Virginia blood kin became a deal I could no longer pass by--so here I am. In a fascinating interplay of synchronicity and serendipity, I was online constantly doing the Indeed & Jobcase employment search, and I blundered into a very sharp health insurance broker who coached me into getting both Medicare and Medicaid full coverage. Since I lost my choice gig in Austin when my boss passed away at 90, here I am suddenly being "poor enough" to have what seems to be sort of a Rolls Royce insurance coverage--for now. Following the sage advice of a doctor pal in Santa Fe, I've been seeing as many specialists as possible while I still have this phenomenal coverage to do a sort of 50,000 mile check up on my body, and one of the forays into health sleuthing led me to a session with Dr. Mariana Phillips. It was determined via a recent biopsy on chest markings at Carilion Dermatology that my pectoral "dark sun spot" was indeed malignant skin cancer, and the next stage was to do 2 more invasive tissue excisions to further analyze my health prognosis; for decades, I've been a deep tanning sun worshiper, so here I am. The good news: thus far there's ample evidence my immune system over the years silently fought back against the malignant cells, killing off a lot of them. There's still a nest of cancerous cells surrounding the now excised dark spot, but they're apparently not actively reproducing, and my lymph nodes seem to be free and clear. I await the latest biopsy results with a strong sense of optimism. Dr. Phillips is yet another Carilion-related physician who possesses a degree of excellence and integrity as good as any medical professional I've ever encountered across decades of growing up in Houston and living in Austin. For real. She has a very warm and engaging personality, and her eyes are brimming with intelligence, not unlike my late father's, who was a brilliant scientist. She was assisted by a med tech named Jarret (who expertly conducted my initial biopsy a few weeks ago at Carilion Dermatology), and together they painlessly cut into the two target sites on my chest, one large enough as to look like a stitched-up war wound upon completion. Rounding out this medical dream team was the nurse Teresa, whose friendliness and integrity seem to be the norm for all Carilion people. It's so wonderful to be surrounded by medical professionals at the top of their game. As I await the results from the latest procedure, I am abundantly thankful my dumb luck connected me with Dr. Phillips and her team. I am supremely confident that I'm in the best possible hands for attacking this potentially life-threatening issue, and as ever, this giant medical group called Carilion continues to wow me with the relentless excellence and integrity of all their people I've encountered thus far. The added bonus: Dr. Phillips is a genuinely nice person with a great sense of humor, she patiently answered in detail all of my medical questions, and she's a genuine pleasure to be around. Three cheers and two thumbs up for Carilion--and Lucky me!

I had the blue light treatment and it went well. The exception was that they are now billing me for…read morea tiny tube of ointment used in preparation for the treatment. Apparently my healthcare plan is saying it should be covered by my prescription coverage. Now I have to call and try and work with them, or pay $848 out of pocket.
