I came to try out a class as a first time visitor at GritCycle. I have been to cycling studios before, and the energy of GritCycle is up there, maybe even more infectious! The element that initially threw me off is how dark the room can be, but it makes it extra more dramatic when the beat drops and the lights change. Adds to the vibes. The bathroom is also very well equipped with wipes, spray on deodorant, showers etc, and pretty clean. There are plenty of lockers and cubbies in the lobby. I liked how spacious the bathroom, lobby, and locker area is, making preparing and leaving class more accessible (some studios are very cramped). The one thing I noted during the class is that it got very warm, and the fans weren't on. I think if the fans were turned on, it would have made this a 5* experience! read more

Hmmmmm GRIT cycle. Positives: Friendly front desk dude, no nonsense cycle - if you are here for a social club - oh my :-O I am very sorry if you thought this was 'the spot'. A couple of the group leaders are actually friendly, talk a bit after class, crack a few jokes - smile with their eyes and are just ... human. Negs: Wow - the aggressive vibe here is like watching a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders episode. At the end of the class (the one with the grey/palatium hair that is front and center on the website) says (with all her heart) - "Seriously guys, I am here for you, if you have any FAT A$$ goals you want to crush this year - reach out, I will help you (please, someone... give her a snack,,, scary) - "I mean I want to crush those ***FAT*** A$$ goals with you". I could not help but wonder which person with a fat a$$ made her so angry that day. She was slapping one hand into the other to punch in that ***FAT*** and ***A$$*** - in case anyone quickly getting away from her missed it. She has the warmth of the principal in the movie School of Rock ..."want a hug" - ahhhhhhhh. I like a good A$$ kicking (I don't have much, but I work with what I got) in a spin class, but this is more like - ' a prestigious dance academy in Berlin run by a coven of witches.' :-D That levity, that lift that you ride out on when your group leader 'takes you there' - well, like I noted a few are able to lighten the mood, turn on the God forsaken fans and give us a great ride. I've been here once but love it! (Read my review of GritCycle - Costa Mesa for an overview of GritCycle generally) This studio is so big and wonderfully spacious. Love the big lobby area and the side areas for lockers and what not. I really hate when you go to a workout class and everyone's squished coming in and out getting their lockers or items before and after their class. This is not the case here. Always get a great workout in at GritCycle's many locations, but my favorite instructor here is Leilani! Lots of parking, great workout, lots of time options! read more

Phenomenal instructors! Things I like: + Great workout! + Super fun playlist! Gets you going! + You can reserve your specific bike online in advance -- it's not a free-for-all, fighting for bikes. + Early morning (5:45 a.m.) classes. I tried Grit originally with a group of co-workers - I've gone back a few times since then and always work up a great sweat. I'm not super coordinated so some of the "moves" on the bike are a little challenging for me, but I try my best! I wish this location had a quick noon class like Costa Mesa -- that would be my only recommendation for a change. To say I love grit is an understatement. This place is a staple in my life now and cycling has helped me to be so much happier. I love the community here. The classes are top notch. You can't find a better place to spin. From Emily and Tanner at the front being so on it and amazing, to the incredible instructors. I previously gave GritCycle in Dana Point a 3-star review due to my experience the non-instructor staff, which I stand by. However, after attending seven more classes, I'm updating my rating to 5 stars because the instructors do everything they can lead fun/hard classes. They crush it every time and always bring the energy. The workouts are great and the music is good. I leave sweaty and feeling a nice release of endorphins. The studio is clean, well-located, and has plenty of parking. Booking and checking in through the app is easy, so you can avoid the line at the front desk. While some of the non-instructor employees appear to be teens who lack customer service experience, others really are helpful. The instructors make up for any shortcomings. read more

Love love Grit! Signing up was super easy. I signed up as a first time student (complimentary). Initially I was #11 on the waitlist two days prior to the class but ended up in the class the night before. The class was advanced but I think beginners could modify. Loved the lights, playlist and teaching style. Charmaine was super motivating throughout the class and gave great cues. Coming from a fitness instructor, cueing is soo important and her cueing was amazing! They have 1 shower with complimentary towels. My Peloton shoes worked on the bike so I didn't have to rent any. I had to wait to write a review, partially to make sure it wasn't an emotional rant (never fair to a business), partially in hopes my initial judgement would be changed by a miraculous shift in member follow-up. (Didn't happen.) I really wanted Grit to be my go-to workout. M-F 5:45AM is perfect for my schedule, and it's about a mile from my house. The first time I went, I shed tears in the dark, grateful to finally be on a bike in a loud room full of other like minded people, post Covid. This would be my new blue-illuminated sanctuary! I didn't even blink at paying $400 for the monthly unlimited, this was worth it! As the weeks progressed, I started to notice none of the employees ever said hello to me. Sure, I get it, it's crack'o dawn early, but I did notice others receive incredibly warm reception when they arrived. I was just looking for at least an, 'I see you' type response. Nada. Never. in 50 rides at that studio, I was invisible. I can shrug that off because Im really there for the ride, get in early & get on with the day buzzin' from the endorphins & having memories of the great songs in my head that will keep me dancin' for the rest of the day! Well... there's that. The only thing more tired than me at 5:45AM are Chelsea's playlists. Overall she is a good instructor, but no joke, the playlists are pulled from a pool of like 20 songs. Rather than leaving motivated, I started leaving mad, which sucks because she teaches 3 of the 5 days a week I want to attend. Don't tell me to push out of my comfort zone when you won't even try to make a fresh playlist. Sure, I know there are a lot of people who don't care about the music, but you've got to consider there will be some people who do. That is the reason I spin. To get lost in the music! I think one of the instructors said they play the same song as a 'drill' so you can see how you improve. I rolled my eyes, please don't insult our intelligence! You can have a 'drill' with a different song at the same BPM/RPM. There are just too many incredible tracks in the world to play the same ones on repeat. Life is too short to play the same damn playlist. read more

I arrived 2 minutes before class started and they told me they gave my spot away... and then they charged me a cancellation fee even though I showed up!!!!! I booked through class pass and the guy at the front desk said I have to contact customer support at class pass in order to not be charged the cancellation fee. Not helpful and bad customer service. I've been to a lot of cycle studios around the country through Classpass, and felt disappointed by elements of GritCycle. I feel like they have room to improve on the level of really connecting to clients. I'll start with the pros: from a pure workout standpoint, I did get an amazing workout. I love when we can ride to the rhythm of the music 100% of the time, which we did here. We were out of the saddle about 95% of class and it was very challenging. I like the small touches by the studio, like the fact that they place hand weights for you, provide sweat towels, and give you cold eucalyptus towels after class. The bikes were comfy compared to other studios. I especially liked the dim lighting and how the instructor would switch from total darkness to a little bit of illumination so you could see yourself riding in sync with others without harsh lighting making you feel spotlighted. Also, the music selection was excellent and the sound system was probably the best I have heard at any cycle studio. Now the cons: the studio had a bit of a weird and superficial vibe. I wasn't really acknowledged for it being my first time there- the desk staff did comp my shoes as a first time thing but didn't bother showing me around at all or offering assistance with anything. The lockers didn't seem to work and no one assisted me. When I got into the cycle room, no one offered to help me set up my bike or clip in. Their clip ins and bike adjustments were very difficult and I felt like staff were seeing me struggle with it but not bothering to help at all. I eventually had to go up and ask. Their clip ins were also slippery on the pedals and did not feel super secure. There are a LOT of bikes in the room; luckily this class was only about 1/3 full but if I had people in front of me or next to me it would have felt extremely crowded and I wouldn't have been able to see myself in the mirror at all. I'm very used to instructors acknowledging you, asking your name, or helping you with the bike as a first time attendee of a studio, but this instructor (Chandler) didn't do those things. She didn't really use anyone's name during class, and would instead refer to us collectively as "GritCycle" or "10:45 class", which was odd to me. Her energy and encouragements felt forced because there was no personal touch, and I didn't feel like she connected with us. That isn't the best feeling in a class where you really need to dig deep and leave everything out there. Same thing happened at the end of class- I was really struggling to unclip and missed most of the end stretch. No one offered to help me or asked how my class experience was afterwards. Felt like staff was on autopilot. I just didn't get a particularly friendly or welcoming vibe from any of the staff or other riders. I'm in my twenties but all of the staff seemed extremely young and not trained in really delivering a great customer service experience. Just didn't get a sense that anyone really cared if I enjoyed my experience or not. Overall, from a workout standpoint GritCycle was excellent, but the personal touches that make me fall in love with a studio and want to return again and again were just not there at all. Solid option for a drop in, but not sure if I would be excited about returning. If their customer service element was boosted I feel like this place would be very spot on in all ways. read more

Though I am in the early stages of experiencing spin classes, Chelsea is one of the top two instructors I experience in my travels. Chelsea is an exceptional instructor because she communicates clearly and with enthusiasm. She articulates what to expect in each phase of her class by demonstrating what to expect (with a light on so we can see) and repeating the expectations of the next phase with positive warmth. Even with the pulsing and loud music, she is easy to hear and understand (even when I'm wearing earplugs). The workouts are tough, but she encourages you to do your best and not be discouraged by the better spin talent in the class. An area for attention is the staff at the reception who are confused and not very welcoming, but it is before 6am so we are all tired. In my first three GritCycle classes, the reception has been bored or distracted and not too friendly. They have not pointed out where the class was located, welcome me, share where to find water/towels/restroom, and notify me that there are lockers we can use (the last one was possibly mumbled on my 2nd visit only). The reception folks bunch together and talk amongst themselves where they seem more comfortable and happier. read more

If you're use to soul cycle don't go. Music was horrible! I purchased 5 classes used them and will never return. Be careful they have some instructors that promote using your Apple Watch and others that will complain if you're using yours and it's not in dark mode. The whole reason for some people to use and record their workout is to monitor their heart rate. I talked to the manager all she did was tell me the watch needs to be in dark mode. Customer service here is inconsistent. Extremely disappointed left without feeling good. Extremely sad soul cycle left Newport!!! Never had a problem in there. read more

Teachers are super motivating, so excited every time I step in to class . Cool music , lights , energy ! Everything is top notch. I've been coming to grit for many years now and I'm sad to say that the customer service has declined. I'm not the type to ever write a bad review but i have been holding this back for a long time. There has been many times where I walk in and the girls at the front desk don't even greet me or say anything at all, not even a smile, expecting me to just say my bike number. This is not the way a business should be run and it reflects very poorly on management! There has been multiple times where even the manager seems to have a bad attitude and it is just not a friendly environment at all. They will not talk to you but they will go on to gossip with each other in front of paying customers. I have continued to return for Leilani and Steph's class because they have always been extremely kind and welcoming, but unfortunately the attitude of a few of the front desk people (not all of them) and a couple of the instructors continuously leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I should have written this review years ago. I have been taking spin classes at Grit for over 4 years. The classes are affordable and the facility and equipment are great. But the most important element is the instructor. Steph C has been my go to instructor for most of that time, and while I will on occasion take another instructor's class, I pretty much only take her classes. A spin class can be a grind but with a personality like Steph's the classes breeze by and I get a great workout. Yes, the participants are young and predominantly female and even though I am neither young nor female, I still feel like I fit in. I am looking forward to many more years of spinning with Steph. read more

Amazing classes!!!! I am new to GRIT so I have not experienced Costa Mesa. This new GRIT is 4 minutes from home and it is fabulous! So happy they opened this location. I have referred many friends here and they have all been very happy and purchased class packages. I have been spinning for a long time but even if you are new to spin don't feel intimidated this is the perfect place. There are staff members to help you with bike settings, and borrow spin shoes. I have tried all teachers and they are all great so check out their schedule. 5:45am Matt is my favorite! Sign up online and give it a try you will love it! Grit is amazing! It is always clean and they provide towels for the ride and then an ice cold eucalyptus scented wash cloth at the end of the ride. The music is upbeat and the instructors encourage all riders to go at their own pace and level. read more

I just took my first EVER cycling class this past Sunday. Steph was absolutely amazing and I sweated like Ive never sweated in my entire life! The class was so fun and Steph was so upbeat and helpful! Unfortunately, I didn't have such a great experience with the front desk ladies. They lent me the shoes for free but didn't help me with anything else. I struggled to get my shoes clipped in (it being my first time and all) and they didn't really give me any instructions or help after checking in. Maybe they were busy! That was disappointing but Steph made up for it! Regardless of the lack of help up front, I would totally recommend and plan on making this a regular stop! read more

Everyone who works at GritCycle is so amazing! I feel so uplifted, inspired, and pumped up after every class. All instructors are great, but Sydney, Charmaine and Amanda are especially so energetic and genuine and so GOOD at their jobs in their own unique way. The front desk girls are so sweet & add to the experience so much as well. As far as the ambiance and feel to GritCycle, it is very clean, aesthetically pleasing, and definitely has a wow factor. Little things go a long way like having water, mints, hair ties, scented towels, deodorant, dry shampoo, a blow dryer.... really anything you could think of that you could need to prep or to shower & get get ready after a ride. The rides themselves are so fun & feel like a party. There is no way in hell that I would ever find riding so intensely & fast something that is fun (or even something I'd consider LOL) but GritCycle makes it accomplishable & such a great experience. What I have learned from Grit is that it is all in your head!! And that our bodies are capable of so much more than we think. I would recommend GritCycle to anyone and especially someone who is struggling to find the motivation to do cardio. Such a great start or end to your day! read more

Tried spin before and didn't like it much, until I gave GritCycle a try, and LOVED IT. Great environment, good teachers, and they never EVER pressure you into buying a package or membership. There are often flash sales where you can load up on classes. Rotate your schedule, if you can, to find the instructors you like best. read more

I have never been into spin class until I walked into Charmaine's class! I have been wanting to leave a review and just haven't gotten to it. Todays's 8:15 am was outstanding! Great music and energy is coupled with her infectious cheering on and energetic cues. You can tell she loves what she does, she not only makes sure the regulars are ready to ride, she coaches the new riders so you are feeling the effects of a great Workout. Charmaine is why I'll keep coming back, I'm hooked and the results are fabulous! The facility is beautiful, bikes are new, clean and all the amenities are graciously laid out for you after a ride . This review is long overdue. I remember my first Grit Cycle class at Monarch Beach with Lisa Mikelson and I instantly became hooked. I had taken spin classes 20+ years ago and it wasn't anything like this. I continued to take classes at Grit with Lisa and with Steph Castro -another amazing instructor. The energy these ladies bring and the words they say keep you moving even when you are having the most stressful of days. You ladies rock ! And when Charmaine Shelter became an instructor it was like the icing on a cake. I've been following Charmaine since she started as a Barre instructor and then became a yoga instructor and now a Grit cycle instructor. You never know what to expect in her class which makes it so much fun - you will walk away energized and motivated to be even stronger than you are. She is such an amazing force!! I am truly blessed to have her part of my fitness journey and I am forever grateful for her. Grit is lucky to have these ladies as instructors. The studio is awesome! They really take pride keeping it clean and the equipment solid. The vibe when you walk in just makes you want to keep coming back. GritCycle is quite frankly the best place to workout in South OC. It's clean, beautiful, and always well stocked.
