This is one of the more disappointing reviews I have had to write because I walked in genuinely wanting to support this place. Ever since Island Flava closed, I have been looking for another Hawaiian spot that could become a regular stop for me. I came across this location, saw the positive reviews, and thought I had finally found one. Unfortunately, I never even made it far enough to order food.
The experience started strangely before I ever reached the counter. When we pulled up, the building looked almost vacant. The parking lot was practically empty, and for a moment I honestly thought I had the wrong address. We drove around and eventually saw someone entering through the back, which was how we realized the businesses inside were actually open. Once inside, most of the other food counters appeared closed, the dining area was extremely quiet, and this was essentially the only operation running.
I walked up to the counter with a friend as a completely new customer. There was one employee working. He never greeted us. No "hello," no "welcome," no "have you been here before," no acknowledgment that two people had just walked up potentially ready to spend money. He simply stood there looking at us while we were trying to figure out the menu.
Since I was the customer, I finally said hello first.
His response was essentially an eyebrow raise, the kind of silent gesture someone gives instead of actually speaking to you.
We continued looking at the menu because, again, neither of us had ever been there. Instead of asking whether we had questions, explaining anything, recommending something, or even giving us a basic "take your time," he walked away and started doing dishes.
That was the moment I decided I was done.
I cannot speak to what kind of day this employee was having, what his position was, or what may have been happening behind the scenes. What I can speak to is how I was treated as a first-time customer. I felt completely unwelcome. I felt dismissed before I had even been given the opportunity to order. When a customer walks into your establishment for the first time, especially one unfamiliar with your menu, basic hospitality should not feel like an unreasonable expectation.
And that matters even more when you are asking people to pay restaurant prices.
I was prepared to order, spend money, try several things, and potentially become a repeat customer. Instead, the person representing the business made me feel as though my presence was an inconvenience.
That is what disappoints me the most.
Restaurants do not earn loyal customers only through food. The experience begins the second someone walks through the door. A greeting costs nothing. A simple "let me know if you have any questions" costs nothing. Making a new customer feel like you actually want their business costs nothing.
I have read that this business developed a strong following from its food truck days, and perhaps the food really is excellent. I cannot review the food because the service experience stopped me from ever getting that far.
I walked in hoping I had found a new Hawaiian spot close to home. I walked out feeling disrespected and completely uninterested in returning.
If this employee was having an unusually bad day, then I happened to meet him on the worst possible one. If this is the normal level of customer interaction here, then management has a much larger problem.
Either way, my first impression became my last impression.
One star, not because I disliked the food, but because I was never made to feel welcome enough to order it. read more
