Some people have restaurants or other stops that they will always visit each time they are in that town on vacation or passing through, well Grimm's is definitely of my always stop if I am in Everglades City. Granted Everglades City is not a town to pass through or visit on an overnight vacation for us since it doesn't have much to offer other than the best places for Stone Crab. We drive an hour from our home just for lunch out at one of the few places well worth visiting but my hubby ALWAYS stops at Grimm's on the way out of town with his cooler in hand. Grimm's has their own crab boat fleet and they catch and cook their Stone Crab claws at the docks and the inside of the building has a retail counter. The prices are ALWAYS very fair and we also like their mustard sauce for dipping and even though I don't eat it, my husband likes their Fish Dip (which is a bit spicy). Best of all, they are super friendly and family run. And a bit of advice if you stop in for Stone Crab Claws... pay the $1 dollar per pound to have them pre-crack them for you. As soon as October first arrives every year, my wife gets excited since it's her birthday month.... but for me, I get excited because I know Stone Crab season is right around the corner. October 15 is the magic day... and before the date even arrives my wife and I are already talking about our yearly Stone Crab day trip across Alligator Alley from the east coast. Of course we can get Stone Crabs locally to our location (we live on the east coast)... there are plenty of options from fish markets to plenty of restaurants including some famous ones like Joes Stone Crab; can even go register some traps and get them ourselves.... But there is something about visiting the quirky but charming town of Everglades City... It's a small town with lots of fishing and some tourism (airboats and the Everglades National Park)... It's like a hotspot for fresh Stone Crabs and Grimms is one of our favorite places. We'll eat in town but we ALWAYS make our way over to Grimm's to get load up a few pounds into our cooler and return home. What I really appreciate about Grimm's is beyond the delicious sweet tasting crabmeat... it's the hospitality. The guys that have helped us recently and in the past is always the same thing... quiet, laid back kinda of guys but ask one question and they are making suggestions and eager to please; they generally want you to enjoy your purchase and return in the future. Our visit the other day was no different... we requested only a portion of our order to be cracked and he right away explained to eat the cracked within a day and how to store the others and how long they'd be good for... he didn't nickel and dime us when we asked for ice; I think he skipped charging us for the Mustard Sauce since we ordered so many pounds. And of course.... most importantly, the freshness and taste... let's put it this way, Grimm's has it's own boats and traps. Once they take the claws and return the crab to the sea to live another day, they return to the docks and cook the claws immediately and pack on ice immediately afterwards; and then they are sold ! Located near the end the end of the half dirt half paved DuPont road is Grimms Stone Crab, a little out of the way market specializing in sales of fresh local seafood but more particularly only stone crab. I've stopped by here on several occasions but have only made purchases here once since they seem to have the strangest of irregular hours of operations which may in part be due to the varying crab seasons or unpredictability of catches. There is not a place to eat here but you can get fresh stone crab at price slightly lower but not much lower than city super market prices, have them cracked (you would be wise to have Grimms crack them for you), grab some mustard sauce, head home or merely enjoy a stone crab picnic in your car. read more

This has been one of our regular stops during stone crab season. This year (as it seems to becoming a tradition) we rented a little Cessna and flew over for the beginning of the season. Yes, a bit extravagant but a great reason to get pilot friends into the air. A call ahead of time and De Ann can pick you up from the airport or even meet you there with your order if you are pinched for time. Justin works the counter and is full of current news on all things crabs. They have very competitive pricing - much less then the East Coast. But you must call ahead to get an idea of current prices. These fluctuate with availability of claws and gas prices. (our latest tib bit was to expect an increase since yields have been low) No eating area is available, but you can ask for a crack ($1 a lb), grab a mustard sauce and enjoy on the hood of your car. There are other items for sale depending on availability, including smoked mullet, frozen Bahama conch and fish dip. But it is the Claws that bring up to this off the beaten path location. My favorites are the Larges ($16 as of this week). Oh, so sweet. read more

5 star performance! I travel for good fresh seafood! I've been going to the Keys for fresh stone crab as Whole Foods near me in Broward county stopped selling them. I was comparing Everglades city to Keys. Prices, supply. I went 2 days ago. Early am. Drove by City seafood, then the Famous Grimms where I brought in my cooler and they had large selection of beautiful med crabs. I bought 10lbs, Wanda's sauce, and a key lime pie. Crabs were $1. More than City Seafood, yet I wanted the sauce and pie, and they do ship also. We then went to City Seafood for 2lbs medium for early lunch. With large homemade sauce. And a cold beer. Sitting by the water. The claws were cracked, really in pieces. More like smashed. Flavor good, yet crabs looked a bit smaller than Grimms. Homemade sauce was terrible. I didn't actually like flavor of crabs as well as Grimms. My favorite sauce will always be the Joes stone crab knock off recipe. And my favorite place for quality, price, and of course the Key lime pie is Grimms. Thank you Grimms for a 5 star performance! You have a customer for life! read more

As most others have pointed out - Grimms is the place to get your stone crabs. On the annual Fakahatchee Strand hike, we usually stop off at Grimms. This is my father's go to spot for stone crabs, and he usually takes other hikers here as well. While the have the medium, large, and jumbo options, they also have lobster tails, fresh fish, crab cakes, and other seafood options. Don't forget cokes and pies in the fridge as well. There isn't really a spot to eat here, so you might want to bring a cooler ahead of time, and they will provide the ice. But if you know how to do stone crabs, this is a far cheaper option than Joe's. read more

When I'm down in the Florida Keys, you can normally stop by some of the commercial fisherman and they will sell you lobster and stone crab claws for a very low price. When I was in Everglades City, I tried this approach on two fisherman, and both would not sell to me directly, but pointed me to Grimms Stonecrab which was about 100yds down the road. I would have given them 5 stars, but feel like they have a lock on the market there and can therefore control the higher prices. Grimms is the place to buy your crab, you can't eat there, but it is the place to buy your crab. You can call and reserve what you want, Grimms' advantage is for those passing through to just grab crabs. It sits just outside of Everglades City down a dirt road where all the fishing boats dock. Their prices are good, I think for where they are and the quantities they sell, the cracking should be included. What I did: I called in and reserved 4lbs. or medium stone crab. We live in Colorado, and stone crab is one of our favorite splurges, and for my birthday we ordered several pounds. We've ordered from other places, but this is truly the freshest crab we've ever eaten, including from restaurants in the keys. They say that seafood should smell and taste like the ocean? This crab truly did, and we were amazed. The claws were the size that we expected, with some being a bit larger. If you're looking for a place to get FRESH crab, this is it! Amazing stone crab market. What a treat to have sweet fresh stone crab. Prices seemed a bit steep for buying essentially off the dock, but I guess they have the market cornered in this small town. $35/ jumbo, $26/large, $17/medium Literally at the end of a dirt road past a few airboat and alligator companies. Its a convenient stop if youre doing a tour. All of their other local fish and seafood is frozen - so the fresh crab is the way to go. Highly recommend having them crack them for you, unless you want the full experience! The guys knew there stuff. . Grimes seafood market is worth the drive. Although I can get as fresh stone crabs in season and for the same price at COSTCO, Grimms also has fresh Florida lobster tails and Florida lobster bisque, COSTCO does not. You'd have to take them to-go. FYI: Florida lobster tails are sweeter than Maine lobster tails. Grimms is in Everglades City, a nice ride If you live in Miami and want to a get-away for an hour and a half each way. We ordered a pound per person and drove down the street to Everglades Park to eat the stone crabs at the picnic tables overlooking the Gulf. Another option is to sit outside Grimms and do the same thing. There's something about eating stone crabs in the outdoors... They're closed on Sundays, so take your nice ride on a Saturday afternoon and maybe even an airboat ride afterwards. read more

I read all the reviews and couldn't wait to get some Stone Crab Claws from Grimms. We come to SWFL all the time and took a ride. We are in So. Naples so it wasn't really that far. While they were very good please do not be fooled, the price is considerably higher than from other places. We bought the large claws which were over $32/Lb. We get them all the time at Whole Foods who had them for $25. The quality was certainly comparable. The bottom line is that they are taking advantage of a captive audience of the people that come for the Air Boat rides so don't think that they are something special just because they are right there on the water. These folks are exactly what they say they are: a premium supplier of STONE CRAB. Called ahead in the early morning and asked about the "on hand" inventory. They sold out the previous day and told me the traps were being unloaded at the moment and the supply looked good. I asked they reserve me 6 lbs of JUMBO which they graciously agreed to and met me at the Everglades Airport when I arrived with the the "claws", "ice" and a smile. Quality of the catch was superb. I do not think this establishment even deserves 1 star. Yesterday we took a road trip to Everglades City from Miami,FL,to buy stone crabs for a special birthday dinner. We bought $66.80 worth of large claws which we asked to have cracked and then we put them on ice in a cooler. We drove directly home, about an hour trip, and when we unpacked the cooler we were overwhelmed with a pungent fishy odor. We opened the plastic bag containing the claws and the smell was intense. We have had stone crabs in the past and these clearly were not fresh and for us they were inedible. We had to throw them away. Today, we called the establishment and were told that: "We only sell fresh crabs." "We have never had a complaint." In addition, their representative accused us of letting the crabs sit overnight and spoil, despite our assurance that we tried to eat them as soon as we got home (within 2 hours of purchase). The representative refused to credit our account and his attitude was rude and surly. I clearly warn anyone (especially if you are from out of town) to avoid purchasing anything from Grimm's Stone Crabs in Everglades City. read more

My wife and I have been to Joe's Stone Crab in Miami (excellent). We've ordered stone crab (room service) from the Fontainebleau Hotel(good); we had stone crab at Joe's in Las Vegas(O.K.); we ordered stone crab on a seafood website from California (not so good). I was apprehensive about ordering from Grimm's because of the distance between Florida and California (where we live). After browsing their website for a few years, I finally placed an order for Jumbo Florida Stone Crab Claws and received them today. I just want to express how happy I am with the crab. It is how fresh seafood is suppose to taste!!! The "Miss Wanda's Homemade Mustard Sauce" is so worth the money. It is light and a little spicy - just perfect for the crab. I am in love.... We live in California now, but I grew up in South Florida so I ordered a couple key lime pies as well. I was like a kid in a candy store when I started eating it! Grimm's has made me believe that there are still honest merchants who care about their reputation and provide quality merchandise.
