Poor customer service. I couldn't order a sandwich from this place without an incident occurring, i.e., poor communication skills on the telephone. Their staff is rude and doesn't understand how important it is to be courteous to all customers.

Grill Stop has a weird vestibule that's so small that you can hardly open both doors at the same time. I wonder why that is. Did there used to be a pay phone in there, back during the dark ages? I went in this place roughly a million times when it was a knockoff Dunkin Donuts, back during the crack era, but I must not have needed to use the phone. Anyway, I was glad to see that there was something, anything, in this building, and I may have been swayed, on a subconscious level, by the fact that its logo seems to have been cribbed from Wing Stop--one of the best restaurants of all time, of ALL TIME. When I stepped in the door, the guy working the counter seemed kinda nervous, like I'd walked in on something, but it turns out it was just that he'd turned off the menu. The menu in this place is three HDTVs that are mounted above the counter. When they're turned on, they just show a static image of a fast food menu. How decadent, given the nature of this establishment. I guess they figure anyone who would break in would have to break through both doors, and by then I'm sure 5-0 would have intervened. UCPD are vigilant to a fault. It occurred to me to stop there in the first place because I was in the mood for something deep fried (it was that time of the afternoon), but then I figured I might try the Philly cheese steak, both out of curiosity and for the sake of citizen food journalism. It's the very first thing on the menu, which led me to believe that it's either especially good or especially profitable. I knew it could only be but so good, at that price (less than $8, with fries and a soda), but I was curious to see what exactly it was. You can never tell what something looks like from these bullshit menus. Come to find out, this thing is just a Steak-Umm--the frozen, chunked and formed meat tablets they carry in your grocer's freezer aisle. As much of a savage as I am, I haven't had a Steak-Umm in at least 20 years, which ought to tell you something. Not that it's such a bad sandwich. It's oddly delicious in the way that that square pizza that comes with school lunches is way better than it has any right to be. And this version of it is done up with, among other things, grilled onions and melted American cheese. It tastes more like a cheeseburger from White Castle than anything that's not a cheeseburger from White Castle (and I of course mean that as a compliment.) But would I ever knowingly order a Steak-Umm from a restaurant? Of course not! My parents would be so disappointed. As good as this thing was, I don't know that I can give a restaurant that sells such a thing more than three stars. Having said that, I probably will be back. I might try the chicken wings, even though there's at least 40 places that sell chicken wings in a 10-mile radius. If their chicken game is half as good as what they've done to a Steak-Umm, they could be dangerous.

The Philly cheese is not a Philly cheese, seems like its hamburger to me. Stop mincing the steak!!!

My experience with Grill Stop was not a good one. Don't eat there. I got sick while eating the food.

I recently stopped by after an appointment in STL. It was right at lunch time and it was also, opening day for the Cardinals. So when I entered, the line to order was already long. To my surprise, the one lady taking orders, moved that line quickly. So I give her major kudos. When it was turn to order, I was ready. I went with a Double and swapped out the American Cheese for Pepper Jack. For my side, I tried their Salt&Pepper Onion Rings. After ordering, I took my number stick and took a seat at the bar. Once seated, the bartender welcomed me and I ordered a draft beer. I barely had completed my Wordle and my burger basket was being slid in front of me. Before taking my first bite, I admired the crisp edges and actually ran my finger around them. My first bite was heaven. It proved to me that all a good smash burger needs is; ketchup, mustard, onion and pickles. The Onion Rings were made in house and the simple seasoning of Salt & Pepper made them a winner. While dining at the bar, I learned a new trick. If you're going to be sitting at the bar to enjoy your smash burger, you can order it from the bartender. That's right, no standing in line to order, you can go straight to the bar. Great staff. They all hustle and provide friendly and professional service.

Food: The burger? Excellent. One of my favorite smash burgers in the city. The fries? Just ok…read more Maybe it was an off day, but they didn't taste much different to me than a regular fry. Price: All together, with a dollar tip, I paid $27 and change, which to me is incredibly pricey for counter service. $2 for a dipping sauce is steep, and for a small container. Next time? I'd skip the dipping sauce and homemade lemonade to save $7. I'll be back but not running to pay this much again. The storefront: the direct out front, small parking lot was packed and people were going into the gated lot to find parking. Only one person working the counter when you first walk in which lead to a long line at the dinner rush that seemed to be moving pretty slow. We got in before the rush and got our food quickly after. Staff were kind and very helpful! Fairly clean with the food runners circling tables often to remove trash.
