Visited 11/05/2021 Wandering our way across Florida and staying away from Interstates, we suddenly got hungry and found Griffis Cafe pretty much in the middle of nowhere USA. Nothing fancy... tiny place with lots of friendly locals as well as the wait staff. We decided to try the gator bites... which proved to be a bit tough. A second try at gator bites later in the week proved these were a bit tough. Still... they had good flavor. We are camping at the lake Marion resort and developed a hunger for catfish. This place is nearby and far exceeded our highest expectations! We were immediately greeted with a smile and served beverages and our menus. A quick glance at the menu showed a clam strips appetizer that was served almost immediately. The clam strips were fresh, almost too hot to eat with my fingers, and served with terrific homemade cocktail sauce! We ordered a grilled chicken salad and a catfish dinner. The chicken salad was served with perfectly grilled chicken it was ordered lightly grilled and served without a mark on it. Homemade blue cheese dressing with served on the side and the generous portion tasted both really good and homemade. The catfish platter was amazing. About a dozen strips of fingerling catfish served piping hot, crispy on the outside, and meaty on the inside. I normally don't order the thing like fingerings. The usual dry it out over cook fingerlings we're just as fresh and moists could be. The grits had the homemade taste and consistency. The ice tea tasted freshly brewed and was immediately refilled when my service got a little low. The place was clean And cheery. There is one long table outside if you choose to eat outside. Two police officers had dinner at the next table. When the locals eat there you know it must be good. read more

We were staying a week at Westgate River Ranch and needed to get out and eat something else. While there isn't anything close, this place was the best we found within a reasonable drive. The staff there was super friendly and the menu is unique and flat out awesome. I had never had turtle before and it was actually pretty good! The kids enjoyed their dinners too and desserts were top notch. The bill wasn't crazy either, which was nice, considering we ordered all kinds of different stuff just to try them all. We'll be back anytime we're in the area, guaranteed! read more

Stopped here taking the backroad to Orlando. Fried frog leg sort of place. We had the chili and apple pie. Both were homemade and excellent.

Came across this little restaurant while hungry on the way back to Miami, at first you would not think it's a restaurant, kinda looks dark and most the cars were on the side not in front. Server was a young lady she was a joy, beautiful smile. The food is absolutely amazing, I had the fried pickles SO GOOD, chili, SO GOOD, hush puppies, AMAZING, and the burger was absolutely a top notch BIG juicy, FRESH meat burger. Everything was Niceeeely seasoned the list goes on and on. Forgot too mention every piece of food we saw come out the kitchen looked soooo good. This was a pleasant surprise on our drive to Orlando today to pick up our UCF daughter's textbooks from her apartment for her post-spring break online classes due to COVID-19. We enjoyed delicious fried green tomatoes, frog legs, catfish, hushpuppies and more. Although we were keeping an appropriate social distance as a precaution, we enjoyed sharing the dining room with cowboys, hunters, and other locals. The Hubs and I are on the Treasure Coast and this was the perfect midpoint to meet old friends who were at Disney. It's a bit off the beaten path but then real gems are hard to find. The food was awesome! What a variety for a middle of nowhere restaurant. Hands down the best Gator Bites I've ever had. The Fried Pickles are the best I've had since moving down from GA. Our dinners were yummy too. I had the Bacon Chicken Ranch sandwich - yummo! The Hubs had the chicken livers (which we haven't been able to find since GA) and they were delicious too. TURTLE LOVERS BEWARE!!! My review would be a five-star one if Griffis removed turtle from its menu. The staff/owners are very friendly and sweet, and I was so thrilled to have found this out-of-the-way "old Florida" restaurant with fried okra and Key Lime pie and excellent strong iced tea. But, as a longtime turtle and tortoise conservationist and advocate, I was horrified at my last visit to find that on their dinner menu was (UGH) turtle. They did respond to a message I sent that they used "farmed" turtle---a fine legal point, since in Florida we have a Commercial Turtle Harvest Ban in effect. But serving turtle only further confuses the legal status of native chelonians (all species of which have suffered declines due to habitat loss and development) for uninformed patrons, who might infer that it's fine and dandy just to grab any turtle or tortoise from the wild for the cookpot. Griffis has SO MUCH ELSE going for it---melt-in-your-mouth swamp cabbage, fried green tomatoes, local caught catfish and seafood. It simply does not need to include turtle to attract business---and keeping it on the menu may repel many prospective patrons who otherwise might flock to visit. Most turtle and tortoise species in the world are in severe decline or bordering on extinction. They have a slow maturation and "recruitment" rate, and high predation rate on eggs, hatchlings and juveniles. Today's children need to learn about conserving turtle populations---not that it's nifty to eat them. Most kids think turtles are cute---more desirable as a pet or object of wonder, not meat for the dinner plate. No person "needs" to eat a turtle. The minute Griffis removes turtle from its menu, I will return! read more
