The Oliver Inn - The Oliver Inn - Common Area/Hallway

We are completely satisfied with our stay at the Oliver Inn. We knew when booking that some rooms…read morewere 'hostel' style and that the property was accessed with codes and such. Even after reading bad, outdated reviews, we decided to give it a go. So glad we did! Snively's lounge on the first floor is cute and pleasant. We enjoyed our 2 for 1 beer credits included with our room. This is a historical building, there will be noise. But, we weren't disrupted. The Rathskeller speakeasy down stairs is too cute. They weren't playing any jazz (which is common I guess) during our stay, which was fine by us. My hubby and I were celebrating our anniversary, and we loved our choices. Parking is simple enough, across the street in a secure ramp for $12 a day. If you read any reviews that there is a stinky Japanese restaurant on site.....that is outdated info. We stayed in room 3, two twin beds, lower level, shared bathrooms (2)....both have showers and we never encountered both being in use at once. Beds were comfy and the bedding was soft. We will definitely be back. Personally, I like no windows; I prefer to sleep in a cave. Lol. The elevator was a nice surprise. I need my knees replaced; stairs are not my friend. Lol.

The boutique feel really came through -- the room was well-appointed, clean, and had thoughtful touches that made it feel more personal than a chain hotel. While there wasn't staff onsite, they were easy to reach by phone if needed, which worked fine during my stay. One thing to note is the location. While it was convenient to some attractions during the day, the surrounding area didn't feel the safest in the evening. If you're looking for a cozy, comfortable stay and don't mind limited in-person staffing, this hotel is a nice choice.

The Greysolon Ballroom is a stunning location in the heart of Duluth. From what I understand, it…read moreused to be a hotel but was repurposed as a community center and a ballroom. You walk in and you're struck with a bit of awe and the grandeur and old design of the place, it truly is beautiful. But, as it's such an old building , there are flaws. If you want to get to the ballroom, you have to use the elevator. This thing is SLOW. And there are no stairs that will take you directly up to the ballroom, they were closed off (not sure why). And not only is the elevator slow but it mainly alternated between the lobby and main level that houses the community center so good luck getting to the ballroom in less than 5 minutes. But, once you finally arrive the place is very nice. They have a cute little coat check and everything was set up in advance of the event we hosted. We also asked for an additional table for name tags and they obliged immediately. The drinks here are STRONG but you won't see me complaining. They even had some winter seasonal cocktails you could order that sounded nice. The sit down dinner began with a salad, which was fine, and then we were released by table to go to the buffet (which isn't a buffet because you can't go back, but is served buffet style). The food was amazing. I was extremely stuffed and then they passed out the dessert. The cake was more like a thick fudge but was also very good. The acoustics in the room, when many people are talking at once, are not great. It's hard to hear and equally as hard to get people to be quiet. Because of this and the terrible elevators, I was tempted to give 3 stars but honestly, the food and service is just that good. They were willing to cater to whatever we needed.

We just got married here last weekend and it was amazing. The staff was fantastic. Any issue we…read morecould have had they fixed it. They even continually checked in on guests. Without them I know the night would have turned stressful, with them it was relaxing and a breeze. The room was just all we could have hoped for too, and I have gotten so many compliments on the food. They were just awesome!!

General - This is one of my favorite places to stay when visiting the Duluth area…read more Location - This hotel is located on a small strip of land called Minnesota Point (a small, long island adjacent to the city's port). You get to drive over the iconic lift bridge to get to the area. There is a great beach area just down the road but the hotel is still close enough to walk into town to enjoy shopping and dining in Canal Park. The hotel overlooks the harbour, so if you stay here during the shipping season, it makes for a great place to watch boats coming in and out of the port. Rooms & Building - Rooms are very clean and modern with plenty of space and seating for a family to enjoy. Most of the rooms offer a patio that overlooks either the port or parking lot with views of the city. The building is kept in immaculate condition and offers a great mix of nautical and woodsy decor, a perfect setting that represents Duluth. Amenities - The hotel has a pool/hot tub/sauna as well as a large breakfast area and lounge with a fireplace. The pool was heated to a nice temp and the hot tub had good jets. Other amenities include hot towels, S'mores station during select nights, self-serve coffee bar and shuttle services to Canal Park. Food - There is a free breakfast buffet offered with your stay. Classic hot offerings with continental choices make for a filling breakfast with many options to pick from. There is no restaurant onsite but there is a small bar that offers some bar food and a small menu of canned drinks. Vibe - Easy going and super friendly staff. No complaints. Reality vs. Online - Pictures that I saw on their website and online matched the quality and condition of the hotel and rooms in-person. No surprises. Price & Final Verdict - When the price is right, this hotel is an easy #1 spot for me to pick, either for work or pleasure. The area is easy to get to while being right in the middle of one of the busiest areas of Duluth. The nautical setting and extra amenities adds to the enjoyment of the port and lakeside environment.

The room was lovely with a nice view of the harbor and very clean. The pool was nice albeit a little on the small side especially if busy. It took us nearly two hours to get our flowers ordered. I SPECIFICALLY asked what the packages include and the lady said that there were no package deals, but you got free shipping and a toss bouquet with every order. We ordered boutonnieres and a bouquet for me for what seemed like a reasonable price. We payed for half that day. About a week before the wedding, my fiance went in to check on the order. He asked when the rest of the money was due and was told that it was due that day. (No one ever told us that. What would have happened if he hadn't gone in that day?) He then tried to conform our order and was told that a toss bouquet was not part of the deal but he could purchase one for $15 dollars. It was so close to the wedding that we had no other choice but to buy it. The day of the wedding the flowers were late to arrive and half dead. The boutonnieres kept breaking when we tried to pin them on. My bouquet was completely dead by the end of the night. Overall, NOT impressed and I will never go back to Occasions again.

I bounced around multiple times between Occasions, Party America, and Michael's to compare merchandise and prices. Occasions offers the most decorations for bridal showers and was the only place I could find a "Just Married" flag for a car window. On a couple of my visits, they didn't have the exact balloons or party items I had in mind and took out their catalogues to see if it was something that could be ordered. I've always had a great experience in their store. The only downside is that they're not open on Sundays.
