My family and I have been coming to Grey Fox for years, back when they had a tiny tasting room which they have expanded to be a large lovely room with a long table for many people to taste at and other smaller tables with little games for those that may be designated drivers. It also has large windows to enjoy the amazing view over their vineyards and beyond to the mountains. They do a $5 tasting but waive the fee if you buy a bottle which are reasonably priced. The wine is also very tasty, I recommend the Dolcetto wine. The owners and employees are also very nice and helpful. Combine the trip with a tasty lunch near by and you got a fun day ahead of you!

View from the patio - absolutely gorgeous.

I have been to Napa, Livermore, Lodi and Murphys for wine tasting - this was the first place we visited in Oroville and I have to say that I was extremely impressed, not just with the wine but the whole experience at Grey Fox. The winery is on a ridge that overlooks Oroville with the Sutter Buttes right in the middle of the view from their patio. It is an amazing, breath taking view. Jeanne was our pourer, who is also the owner. She was wonderful, very knowledgeable and definitely made it a great tasting experience. The tasting room is gorgeous. It's big and spacious with a long tasting counter and several wine barrel tables. The room has all windows in the back so you can enjoy your tasting to the amazing view of the vineyard and the Oroville valley. The wine was wonderful. My favorites were the oaky-buttery chardonnay and the fruity (grape-y) Zinfandel.

    Two favorites- Verdelho and Torrontes!

Visited April 5 2026. See my receipt as always…read more I belong to the wine club and love coming here to pick up my wine and a combo pizza. The crust is amazing! Because they do not allow dogs inside or outside in their patio area I had to wait with my car running and my air on high because I had my puppy with me. The owners are very nice and I understand about their pet policy. It would have been nice to have a glass of wine and a slice of pizza inside! It's still a very nice environment with trivia on Thursdays and all kinds of drinks ( try the ice cold slushies! ). Pizza is always amazing! You can order pizza and food freshly made. The owner was so sweet and gave us a personal tour of how the grapes are made. His passion and love for what he and his wife does really shines. Highly recommend if you're in the area. Support local business!

Visited November 9th..see my receipt…read more First of all the warm and gracious owners allowed me in even though they were setting up for an event! It has a romantic vibe for wedding or special event! This winery is located off Ward Road in Oroville. It's close to town yet you feel you are in the Country! I think they have about 26 acres with a pond and make some delicious wines...including cabs...pinots..and sangiovose. They have a tasting room that is welcoming along with a larger area for events. They also sell some swag. I bought the Cabernet Sauvignon and the owner was so kind he gave me some delicious mandarins they grow on the property ! So juicy! I love the bridge and the cozy feel to the place. Family run! Although they don't have food or a wine club at this moment it is a great place to have a picnic with some exceptional places to enjoy the scenery! It was a Great experience with good wines and family atmosphere ( love the cute dogs!). Husband and wife owners and their family are kind and welcoming! Don't miss out on this place ( check their hours first). Bring a picnic basket and buy some of their wines and relax!

Open arriving to the winery I was happily greeted by the two owners who started me on their wine tasting list. I was able to try every wine while they explained to me the different varietals of grapes in each. My favorite was their Estate Negroamaro red wine. To me it tasted similar to a pinot and has a very nice fruit flavor. I had to take a bottle home to enjoy later along wit a bottle of their rose as well. In conversation I talked about how I was here for a few days and had to fly back home. Knowing this, they offered to wrap the bottles that I bought to ensure that they would be safe in my carryon bag. This was a thoughtful touch and they made sure to wrap them in several layers of bubble wrap. Coming here was a great experience and the owners were some of the most friendliest people I have ever met.

However when we researched this winery it said "Open" to the public & till 9pm. Also had a phone number that no one answered. So we decided to drive over and check it out ourselves. A Irish lady at a booth, was rude at first then said would you like a card to her ex husband "John" whom I guess pours and "owns" the wine. We left and came back a second time. She was talking about the "local" wineries are private or you have to have an appointment!? Phone numbers do not work. And the only place to "taste" the wine is Clover Cafe? Very odd and not normal coming from the Bay Area/Napa. "Renaissance wine" what's up with that wine? And that vineyard? Weird vibes and the lady at the gate when protecting this vineyard told me to go to Clover Cafe and made us seem like we couldn't afford the wine at their "private" winery! Seems like a cult and the town. She said something about the "Fellowship" I saw a bunch of white people in hatch back cars driving in and out and realized a lot of them were locals. Very odd that this winery is only opened by appointment to the locals and there hasn't been a review of this establishment for 6-7 years. Everything is named after Greek Gods of Apollo. Which also seemed odd. Somethings not right about this place.

Distinctive. It is not always a word that springs to mind when tasting wine. Or visiting yet…read moreanother California tasting room, for that matter. All too often, the wines offered to visitors start to look and taste the same, as do the facilities and even the vineyards where the grapes are grown. Big, rich, and extracted. Ripe, lush, and decadent. Robert Mondavi's oak-soaked legacy lives on, in Napa Valley, and beyond. Not so at Renaissance. Your wine palate here will be reborn. Your senses will be heightened. You will see things differently. The usual "wine words" will not activate automatically in your brain. Your sensory wine tasting memories will search in vain for something similar with which to compare, to judge, to rank, to rate. In the end, you will give up trying to put this place in its proper wine country box, because, as you suddenly realize, that box does not even exist. You decide to reboot your system. You clear your mental cache of past tasting experiences. You clean the slate. You turn the page. You open up your mind wider perhaps than ever before. You choose to forget what a wine is supposed to taste like. You banish Robert Parker and the Wine Spectator from your overly cluttered and anxious mind. You willfully ignore what you were told to expect about this place in the Chronicle. You elect to begin again, like a child learning to read, by picking up an old book on your grandfather's shelf, opening its beautifully embossed, leather bound cover, and turning to page one. The first thing you will notice is that you are almost alone out here. The grounds are quiet and restful with a Zenlike calm emanating from the golden hillsides and green forests. The tour buses, bachelorette parties, and stretch limos are nowhere to be found. The wines are well aged, bottled in a previous century from a time when other people now retired and out of the spotlight commanded the White House or looked out at you from your television screen. A Cabernet Sauvignon 20 years old is not uncommon here. A 15 year old Bordeaux style red blend seems like an upstart teenager. A 10 year old Syrah is barely out of its diapers and is just starting to walk about on two legs like a young child. The grounds are filled with unseen mystery lurking behind the stately rows of palms and vineyard terraces on the hills where hundreds of acres of grapes once thrived. You know that this is a special place, but you are not exactly sure why. The wines in your glass suggest elegance, complexity, precision, passion, resilience, legacy, and strength. They speak of past lives and untold hours of human endeavor. They tell tales. They reflect the soils surrounding you and speak of the people who made them. They taste good, too. They are not merely of the mind, but also of heart and soul. "Wine country" wineries come and go. Ownership changes hands. Founders die, families fall apart, and corporations move in. Tasting rooms get remodeled to appeal to the tastes of millennial consumers using a new algorithm created by a Silicon Valley start up. Cult wines from coveted vineyards and accoladed AVAs that are bathed in new French oak and dialed in to precise alcohol levels are released. High scores and prestigious awards are bestowed. And yet, Renaissance wines endure. In myth. In memory. In the mouths of those who sip and savor them, one glass and bottle at a time. You will never be more present than at the very moment when the crumbling cork is removed, the bottle is gently tipped, and the contents starts to fill your glass. You stop to inhale. You pause. You lift the glass to your lips. You clear your mind. You close your eyes. And you taste as if you had never done this sort of thing before. Veritas in vino written with words you do not yet fully comprehend. But you continue to hope that, one day, probably when you least expect it, you will.

"by appointment only" is understandable, but that means who gets an appointment and who doesn't? Also, where is there a place for you to sign up on the website for the appointment. When you look at their website, it only asked for your full name, phone number and your address and to reach out to the "owners " And does it have to be so far in advance? So people visiting Oregon House don't really get to experience the wineries because it feels like it's only for the people they pick and choose. The ambience of the land was very sad. It looked deserted. There are other towns where there are "hard-working REAL people" and want to give their REAL time and REAL energy yes that means being open to the public! The owner wrote a review on me emphasizing "real people?" We all know this is a little odd when you think about the situation and you're actually there. We can't really give any star reviews because we didn't get any wine tasting or experience. When we were leaving, we did notice the land was for sale. Also, we drove up the hill. We did notice a big German shepherd running the field so like somebody still lives here but the business says it's still open very confusing. All of these wineries need to be more specific on their websites and need to have more information instead of being having people who are visiting get confused or waste their time.

I ended up buying some reds, whites, and the Angelica for gifts as well as tee shirts because of my incandescent time as a retreatant, but I must also encourage you to go at a time when the gift shop is open because the jams, honey, and walnuts they sell there are DELICIOUS. You'll have to walk out of the tasting room and up the walkway alongside the vines to the gift shop during their hours of operation, which seem to vary, but are customarily 2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. They don't offer tastings of the walnuts, jams, or honey. When I got home and tried them, I wish they had since they are absolutely scrumptious and I would've bought more. I really wanted to buy raw walnuts because I had walked alongside the walnut trees during my retreat. However, they only sold the candied walnuts in the gift store. The candied walnuts are grown and made by the monks of New Clairvaux and the ingredients are: roasted walnuts, sugar, eggs, vanilla, salt, cardamom, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper. I gave some to my friends in Berkeley who said they were "delicious and slightly addictive." I agree! The cayenne pepper is subtle, but the mix of the cardamom and cayenne is perfection. If I tried them in the gift shop, I would've bought every one they had on their shelves. The creamed honeys for sale are prepared by the Cistercian Nuns of the Redwoods Monastery. When I saw "almond," because I'd never seen honey from almond blossoms, I bought a few. I should've bought some of the other flavors. I didn't realize until I opened them that they had crushed almonds and orgeat or almond syrup in them! I love orgeat in cocktails, steamed milk, in pretty much anything so this creamed honey is absolutely divine. Again, if I'd known, I would've bought every single jar of it. So, as you'd expect at the Abbey, because they don't have tastings at the gift store, you'll have to purchase the food items on faith. I recommend you do.
