I work a block away from this spot so I'm here often. Can't say I have much of a desire to come back anytime soon, though. Service can be slow. Especially when they are understaffed. Yes, I paid almost ten bucks to watch them make my drink with nasty tap water. They didn't even let it run a few before placing my cup under it. The pastries look thrown together and I go in today for a coffee and a muffin but then I see they are keeping baked goods next to the TRASH with no cover! I have only positive things to say about the staff at this location - friendly, helpful, and fast! That said, since last week, I've noticed that the store has no functioning AC, only fans. NYC is currently under an extreme heat warning, with dangerously high temperatures expected to continue in the coming days. With the summer having only just begun, I imagine we will be under more extreme heat warnings in the near future. The store at 20 East 40th Street is completely unbearable to be in. It is the same temperature as it is outdoors, but with less airflow. I cannot imagine how the employees must feel working in these conditions, which are frankly dangerous. As I have no sense of how this company is structured/managed, I don't know if they've been made aware of this issue. If they didn't know, they do now. If they already know, all I can say is this is appalling. read more

How much do I love Gregorys coffee? So much that I have all of their locations vaguely memorized so that I can plan my commute, depending on where I have meetings and events. Got a lunch meeting on the east side? I'll take the LIRR into Grand Central because there are several on my walk (usually downtown if I can help it). I've ordered ahead several times at this store and I've had nothing but extraordinary experiences with the staff, all of whom are pleasant if not extremely friendly and once, a manager noticed that I waited a little longer than expected after they made a tiny mistake with my drink (maybe served it iced rather than hot or vice versa) and she insisted on giving me a complimentary baked good of my choice. What? See if that ever happens at Starbucks. Now let's talk holiday drinks. Since there's no Gregorys in NOLA, I've had one gingerbread latte from Starbucks that left me with regrets. It wasn't drinkable. I am normally a black coffee kinda girl, but sometimes I want a dessert coffee. I've had nothing but deep love for each and every Gregorys holiday creations, not to mention their Fall Oat Boy that's a menu staple. Let's not forget that Gregorys also has a fair amount of vegan options, including the addictive Vegan Deluxe sandwich and then there's the baked goods and specialty drinks that are vegan without modifications. I could write an entire op ed piece about why Gregorys should dominate the world. I'm glad to see they are slowly creeping into locations beyond Manhattan and Brooklyn. read more

I was running a bit late this morning so I placed a Pick Up order (Iced Fall Oat Boy - delicious btw ) and within 6 minutes my coffee was on that counter despite the crowd they had! Not the first time I've ordered from this location and I can say that they are very courteous with customers. read more

This is a good option if you need to hang out for a bit. Its a large space, with a lot of seating. I had to work there for about an hour, and it was really easy because it wasn't crowded, ample outlets, etc. The coffee is the usual good coffee that you'd expect from Gregory's. read more

This was my first time in New York and this coffee shop kept drawing my attention! I casually walked in just to view the aesthetics and atmosphere but I was greeted with much more than I expected! This review is long overdue but I want to specifically thank Gloria, Vonte, and Brittany for making the experience memorable! I came into town back in May to visit some of my work in Times Square and this is one of my highlights from the trip! Gregory's is across the street from our hotel, so it is very convenient if you want a quick bite and good coffee in the morning. When we went in May 2022, there was a long line and lots of baked goods to go with the coffee. This time, there was no line and just a few bakery items. I got the apple spiced muffin which was delicious. No chocolate croissants. Returned the next day early in the morning and the same thing, no line and just a few pastries. read more

I'm not a New Yorker, but I love Gregory's. I visit Gregory's locations multiple times every time I come to New York City. I've never had a truly negative experience - until now. I placed an order for 2 drinks and 4 bags of coffee at 3:15 pm, for pickup asap. I arrived at the store at around 3:20. On the pickup counter was two bags of coffee, with no drinks. Another couple of minutes, and one drink arrived. Kept waiting until 3:32, when the second drink finally arrived. That was when I inquired about the bags of coffee, and I was informed at that point that two of the bags were not in stock. I requested a refund - which, apparently, neither of the two employees knew how to issue. This necessitated a 20 minute call to what apparently was a district manager so that one of the employees can be walked through the process of how to reverse charges on the POS. While this is happening, this employee was still chugging along making drinks for customers. This is understandable, except that the other employee spent most of that time barely doing anything to help the first employee clear the backlog. I was finally issued a receipt that states that the charges for the two bags of coffee were voided, and was told that this will appear in my app in 2-3 business days. The only problem is that, in 2-3 business days, I will not be in New York to physically walk into the store and ask for charges to be reversed if they have not been reversed. I understand that this is standard practice, but it is frustrating. What is more frustrating is how undertrained the two employees were, and how one of them just seemed unwilling to be a team player. It's not a good look for the company. Will I still be going to a Gregory's when a location opens where I live in the middle of October? You bet. Will I be returning to this location on this trip or when I return to New York? No. read more

Dirty Chai. My favourite hot bevvie, made excellent by the baristas of Gregory's. This location is right by one of my per diem gigs and I ALWAYS grab a cup of something here in the morning, on my way to work. I used to wait until I actually walked in to order by brekkie but since downloading their awesome app, I order remotely on the ride in when I'm about 5 blocks away and my order is usually ready by the time I arrive. My go to is the dirty chai w/oat milk, which is chai with a shot of espresso. The oat milk makes it super creamy. I'll add a peanut butter banana power bite which will hold me over until lunch. The breakfast toasts are good also. I've never been to any other location so I have nothing to compare it to but in regards to other franchise coffee shops (conglomerates that shall remain nameless), this one is great! They have complimentary ice cold water and courtesy cups for customers to enjoy while waiting for their orders. They are super efficient in that a couple people take orders and while they're fulfilling the food orders you pay the next person and someone else is fulfilling your drink order at the same time. When they're not busy it is very streamlined but if they are busy, it can take forever because of their efficiency accepting orders as well as the online orders they're receiving. The app saves you a lot of time. You basically order on your phone and when you arrive, you just pick up your order at the designated area on the counter for app orders. Your beverage will have your name on it. My only issue is that while they put a receipt with your name on it on your beverage, your food order will just be sitting there in a brown bag with nothing to show who it belongs to and sometimes it will be sitting there, before your drink is placed so if a lot of people are ordering food items, they'll be touching that bag to check if it's theirs. One time a lady took my power bite with her drink and they were looking at me like I had grabbed it already. They need to print two receipts for orders containing food. Place one on the cup and one on the bag so we don't have have to worry about contracting norovirus from some grabby patron or have someone snag our breakfast. Aside from that one incident, I've never had any problems. Definitely download the app if you frequent Gregory's because their rewards program actually pays off. They give you a lot back for using the app and I've probably only paid for about 4 out of the last 15 orders I've placed through the app due to the rewards I receive. read more

Came on a Saturday morning right at open (which I was surprised that they don't open till 9!). It's a cute little space and they had decorated for Halloween which was a cute touch. The menu looked really interesting with a mix of cold and hot coffee drinks and the baked goods looked delicious as well. I don't usually drink cold coffee drinks but theirs looked interesting enough to try next time. I went with a cappuccino with macademia milk but they had all different kinds of options for milk. You could do almond, oat, soy or macademia. It cost an extra $.95 to swap out from their whole milk which is kind of pricey but probably on par with NYC prices. But my drink was super delicious! Very smooth and the flavor of the macademia milk added a nice nuttiness to it. read more

Another week, another Gregory's visit! This location has great service and quality coffee. I went here before an event in Bryant Park for a chai lavender latte, along with their crunchy peanut butter power bite and a slice of carrot cake. No, it was not all for me! The power bite tasted so natural and healthy, and at 175 calories, it's the perfect snack to split with someone. The carrot cake (440 calories) was so thick and juicy, and had so much actual carrot in it. Went so perfectly with the star of the show, the latte. I fell in love with this latte, ladies and gentlemen. The taste is so subtle and so delicious, and even made of skim milk, did not lack any substance or "meatiness." I can't wait to treat myself to this silky smooth beverage again soon. The location is relatively clean. Their bathroom could some work, but at least they have one! read more

This location has long communal tables great for getting some work done. I never stay long though, usually in and out with a latte or smoothie in hand. Their fairly new Lean Green smoothie tastes great, and nutritious enough for a light lunch. It's dairy-free, yet still nice and creamy from whey protein and a mix of spinach, strawberries, blueberries, and almond butter. I'm also a huge fan of their Morning Boost smoothie, with two types of berries, and granola, yogurt. It tastes like a drinkable dessert! While coffee quality at Gregory's has suffered a bit from the effects of mass production from franchising, this relatively hidden location of Gregory's has one of the most relaxing, airy ambiance for a coffee shop in Midtown. It is also one of the cleanest coffee shops by far. It certainly helps that it is not too crowded even during rush hours. While the coffee quality is fair, the selection is plentiful between the house blend and a variety of single origins. The banana bread and other pastries pastries are as good as any other Gregory's location. Lastly, the store manager, Joseph, and his team are very friendly and pleasant company. As a whole, Gregory's remains a well oiled machine and continues to provide the midtown workplace with solid coffees and pastries for all occasions (including holiday promotions). Stop in for latte today. Nonfat. It was decent. A darker roast to the bean. But clean tasting. No aftertaste. They had some pastries. And some sort of yogurt based items.. I'm honestly not sure what they were. Looked interesting. I wish they had some sort of healthy vegetarian breakfast option. Yogurt didn't have ingredient label, so I didn't know if it was vegetarian or not. They had a ham pastry. Only other option was sugar.
