On our most recent visit to Sun Prairie, a family member suggested Greenbush Bakery as it was his go-to for donuts / bakery goods. Wow! Greenbush has quite a selection and we found out you can also place a specialty order within 24 hours of desired pickup. Longer business hours than most other bakeries / donut shops. Interior is spacious and inviting if you choose to sit down to enjoy your bakery goodies. They also have a small area set aside as a "gift shop". I was excited to try donuts from Greenbush Bakery for a quick breakfast, the reviews looked great. The bakery was a short drive from my hotel in a small shopping plaza. The bakery is a nice combination of a new store with plenty of old school feel. The donuts are displayed both in the glass cases up front and on the trays on the back wall. The selection is very good with plenty of donut styles and flavors. I ended up getting an apple cinnamon sour cream donut and a chocolate filled stick. Donut prices were a bit expensive, $4.65 for 2 donuts. The donuts were OK, but not great, a bit dry and not as flavorful as I would expect. The apple cinnamon flavor was a bit muted and the filling of the stick was chocolate pudding rather then chocolate creme. I would have liked to try one of the apple fritters, while they were huge $5 seemed excessive. If the other donuts were better I might have grabbed one the next day for the drive home. Maybe my expectations were too high but I just found Greenbush Bakery to be a bit of a disappointment. Certainly not bad, but I have had much better donuts. read more

We went at 7 am on a Friday and were unfortunately disappointed. I'm not sure if their bake times have changed from our past visits (baking during the day instead of early morning), but it seems as though the early morning donuts are not fresh and potentially baked the previous day. Food 3/5: we got an assortment and none of them tasted fresh as we've had from this location in the past. They do have a nice variety and we love their old fashion donuts. Service 5/5: the girls were very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. Overall this place has great donuts *when they are fresh*. I ordered my standby, cake with vanilla frost and rainbow sprinkles and I got an old fashioned cherry. $1.55 per donut is a good price, Is pay twice that for these. I use to visit this bakery on Regent St. when I worked in Madison. I was surprised to see it on the East side when I went to a store nearby. I don't commute to Madison anymore so am only in the area for specific reasons. I love their new store. This review started a while ago and I have been back to this bakery a couple of times, telling everyone I know who frequent the East side of Madison. We have tried a variety of their baked goods and they never disappoint! I suggest you get there early to have a variety of choices. Fritters as big as your head-today we tried the blueberry and cherry. Moist and delicious. We were shopping by East Town and swung by the bakery on our way home. It was about 12:30 in the afternoon and we did not realize they closed at 1 pm so we're happy the timing worked out. After purchasing the fritters we were told we could have some free donuts. My husband asked how many and they said 6. Wow-did not expect that. My husband choose some donuts with chopped peanuts on top, 2 with vanilla glaze and 2 with chocolate glaze and a couple of chocolate cream filled Bismarck's. If I eat a Bismarck it is usually custard filled because that is what "I thought" were the only kind I liked. However their cream filled was so light, fluffy and not overly sweet that my mind has been changed. We both ate a peanut topped donut on our 30 minute drive home and I told my husband I was glad we were in his car as he didn't care if peanuts rolled onto the car floor...lol. These donuts are one of his favorites and they did not disappoint. I'm pretty sure he inhaled his. While in the bakery we learned the name Of the ladies at the counter. Second time we have stopped at their far east side location to pick up some donuts. I really like their cake donuts especially the cherry flavored version - delicious. Very moist (I know that word is not on trend but they are moist). I think these are a bit better than their yeast donuts - the peanut one was good but needs more peanuts! Got an old fashioned the other day and it was rubbery like it was a day old, couldn't finish it. I don't understand why others don't seem to perceive this. Occasionally I catch them coming right out of the kitchen and those are great, but 95% of the time they are underwhelming and just okay. I actually prefer standard grocery store donuts like Pick N Save, even if they're not so "gourmet"... as long as you get them relatively early in the day they are pillowy soft and delicious. If you have enjoyed Greenbush Bakery doughnuts then you understand how disappointed we were to have purchased apple fritters, cherry fritter, and the assorted cream, jelly filled, and sprinkled doughnuts. A dozen dought including 2 apple fritters. Our surprise the fritters were verey crunch on the outsidewas that the fritters contained virtually no apple along with the cherry fritter contained no cherries. The cherry fritter has some cherry flavored sauce and that's it. All of the doughnuts were extremely dry. We were heartbroken to see that either the recipes have been reduced along with the quality of the product or that the batch of doughnuts for the morning were bad. Either way - quality control has slipped or reformulation of the receipies for cost savings may have been implemented to save money and increase profit. Quality is slipping and the product does not live up to the reputation established over the years. Be caution when purchasing in the future. read more

Old fashioned donuts are delicious as always! This east side location does event orders, so you're less likely to be able to get a super hot and fresh donut here than at the Regent location. Parking is much easier at this location because you can just park in the lot and walk in, instead of dealing with street parking. This place is listed as the best place to get an Old-Fashioned donut in Madison! I honestly didn't try any other donuts while in Madison but I have to say they make a mean Old-Fashioned. Although not my absolute favorite donut (but the favorite of my husband), the donut flavors are wonderful, and so are the giant fritters (get the cherry!). We served Greenbush at both our wedding and housewarming. The order was accurate, and the donuts made the 3-hour drive to the wedding location without incident. Actually, people started eating them before the wedding dinner started, and we got one of the last 2! If ordering for a wedding, order more than you think you will need!! We love a good doughnut! When we found out that we would be traveling to Madison I did some of my Yelpsearch to locate places we would like to go. When I found there was a well rated doughnut place and that is was really close to our hotel, that went to the top of our list. We were in town from Sunday to Monday and planned to stop over Monday morning before my nephews 7:00am game. Yes he had a game at 7:00am on a Monday morning. Hockey game. I usually get up early but getting up and playing at game at 7:00am is just cruel. Anyhow I was excited to see that Greenbush bakery would be open and that we could get some doughnuts for breakfast. After checking out their website, looks like there are two locations and that the location near us was their newer second location. Their original location stays open later which I think is awesome so all the doughnut loving people can get a doughnut at most anytime of the day. Now if you have read any of my other reviews from doughnut places, am very fond of the apple fritter. In fact that is the doughnut I always order and will only try another doughnut if someone else shares or we end up with a lot of doughnuts. I defiantly consider myself a connoisseur of apple fritters. We made the short trip from our hotel over to Greenbush. It was early in the morning (about 6:30am) and while they did not have a large selection, there were a few doughnuts to select from. As I scanned what doughnuts were out I noticed that there were not any apple fritters. This is like getting turned down for the prom. Maybe they were in the process of being glazed in back by the doughnut elves and would be out shortly, so I asked. Unfortunately I was told that they do not make the apple fritters until the afternoon. What!?!? While an apple fritter would be delicious anytime of the day, I can't be the only person who would love their apple fritter in the morning. I was crushed and had a hard time thinking of a back up plan. As it turned out I had my wife and sister and law just pick a selection and I went out to the car. We enjoyed the doughnuts after my nephews game to celebrate another victory. I had a little of a sprinkle doughnut. Doughnuts are kind of like pizza and cookies to me. Pretty tough to have a bad doughnut and this was true here. It was a good doughnut, just not what I was hoping for.
