Each meal had hush puppies and sides. We had about 5 bags or so of the yummy hushpuppies. The fries were big and soft I loved it. The sweet potato was a bit overcooked and mushy, but we still enjoyed it. (Unless it was suppose to be like that) Baked potato, we didn't get to try sadly. We were too full. Fried seafood baskets 5/5 I really really liked the batter and the ratio. It was just enough batter and loved the tartar sauce that went with it. My craving so totally satisfied. We killed all of the fried seafood. Nothing was overly cooked which we appreciated. Pulled pork 3/5 Sadly we didn't enjoy this too much. It must have just been our preference. It wasn't the taste that we were use to. Pork ribs 3/5 The Barbecue sauce was a bit liquidy and sour. We are use to drenching our meats in thick sauce and that sauce wasn't what we were use to either. (Texan problems) but the ribs were soft and tho it looked dry, it wasn't. Just needed some more seasoning on the rib itself. Overall the food was great. The service was quick and on point. I overly ordered but nothing was missing, nothing was incorrect. Stopped in on a Monday evening and it wasn't too crowded at all. It was a small no frills type place with plenty of parking. I had a small order of catfish. Small Catfish Meal: Came with a side (I had the sweet potato), cole slaw, and catfish. They bring you some raw sugar in a packet, a small serving of cinnamon, and butter to season/load up your sweet potato on your own. Others in my party got a the baked potato that came with a packet of sour cream and butter to go with it. The sweet potato was delicious and cook thoroughly. Not burnt, but cooked well enough to where it was soft and delicious on the inside. Drool... Anyhow, the cole slow was just ok. Nothing too spectacular. I could've done without it, but the farm raised catfish was absolutely delicious. Good breading that was crunchy and not too thick and the fish itself was flaky and delicious. As many may have already read in some reviews, the crème de la crème of this place are their hush puppies that promptly came after we ordered. The hush puppies were off the hook amazing. The absolute best hush puppies in the world! I will put Old Greenbrier Restaurant's hush puppies up against any hush puppy, anywhere, anytime....bring it on! I could go there just to eat the hush puppies. Oh, and the rest of their food is pretty good too! I have been coming to the Old Greenbrier for over 3 decades. The food is outstanding! Good fried food and BBQ. I rank their food in the following order: 1. Hush Puppies 2. Sweet Tea (Yes, in the South, Sweet Tea is considered a food) 3. Catfish 4. Chicken 5. BBQ Now, all of their food is good because 5th place at Old Greenbrier is better than 1st place at most other places. I ordered my favorite which is the small fried catfish filet dinner. You get 2 large pieces of fried catfish, fries and endless hush puppies. TIP: I skip the slaw and double up on the fries. They have the famous "White Sauce" that is a mayonnaise based BBQ sauce. The white sauce is unique to North Alabama and was originally designed for chicken, however many use the white sauce on BBQ and even the hush puppies. The service is very quick and friendly. Usually they bring a basket of hot hush puppies to the table as you sit down. Drink and food orders are quickly taken and everything is quickly served. Last night was no different. I love the soft serve ice cream machine. They use the honor system and you simply place a quarter in the basket next to the ice cream machine and help yourself. The kids love it and the adults do too! Old Greenbrier is located in the small town of Greenbrier, Alabama and is located near nothing! Well, tried this place because we were looking for some local food. The restaurant seems to be really lost in the country side (I mean, away from Madison downtown), which makes it so typical and so local. People and waiters are so nice and friendly, loved the atmosphere. Apparently was built in 1952, which is crazy!! The food was pretty good, my wife had pulled pork and I had the ribs. Ribs were fried and pretty greasy but for once, I did not mind at all trying something new! The hush puppies are so delicious (the best ones we ever had, so we were not able to stop), fresh coleslaw really good, and French fries really well seasoned. The tea is also really good. Finally, the price you pay for the amount of food and overall quality is definitely worth it! The whole place is a typical local experience for any out of the state or foreigners. Stopped in for a late lunch yesterday, first time we've been to the Greenbrier Restaurant. Complementary hushpuppies were very good, some of the best we've ever had. I ordered a large Pork Platter, my fiancee went with Rib dinner. Pork was very good, sides were excellent (sweet potato and cole slaw). My fiancee felt her ribs were a bit dry, they did have a crispy outer coat. But I felt they were good, maybe not the best ribs I've ever tasted, but decent. And the portion size was very generous. For a quarter, you can go up to the self-serve ice cream and get yourself a little cup of soft serve. Nice way to end an excellent meal. Service was very good also. Greenbrier Restaurant is a strong 4 Star rating ( I would've rated this place 5 Stars if the ribs were a bit better). We'd certainly come back again. read more

The last time I visited Huntsville, I ate at the other "BBQ" location. Got here today to find out they're closed, but the original location (just down the road) was still around. The place is smaller, older but the food is just as classic Greenbrier. Had the catfish and ribs - so happy with that combination. Of course, what I remember most, are the hush puppies; light, crispy little nuggets of cornmeal goodness. The catfish was hot, fresh, crisp and tasty while the pork ribs were every bit tender and smoky - good. Top them with a variety of their sauces (the white sauce is a trip on the hush puppies!) and you're set! Service was very friendly and the prices are decent - a fair amount of good food for a good deal. May have to stop in again before I leave town..... read more

Now that's some good down home cookin' This place is a hidden gem just outside the Huntsville city limits. My visit to the Old Greenbrier came from a local recommendation. I set out with a group of friends for an early dinner. It's pretty convenient, just a couple miles off 565 in Huntsville. Don't confuse the Old Greenbrier with another restaurant with a similar name just off the highway. The Old Greenbrier is further down Greenbrier Rd near Route 20. I love the decor at the Old Greenbrier, it's got that simple down home country feel to it that just makes you want to stay and eat! There appears to been several dining areas, my group sat all the way in the far corner with a great view out over the corn fields. Soon after we sat down we were met with our first basket of the endless hush puppies. Yes, endless hush puppies, unless you say uncle they keep coming. These are no ordinary hush puppies, these are probably some of the best puppies I've ever had. Loved them! Just pace yourself, the main portions here are huge! I order the combination plate which includes two meats, cole slaw, and those puppies. I chose the ribs and a catfish filet for my selections but you can chose any two meats on the menu including shrimp, oysters, you name it. The ribs are huge!!! I found the outside of the ribs just a bit tough but I added some of the house BBQ sauce on the table and softened them right up. The catfish filets were tasty. A friend of mine ordered the rib plate as a main course and could not finish 3/4 of them. I came close to finishing too but don't regret all the puppies I had before the plate showed up. Let's talk dessert, because there's always room for dessert! How about $0.25 ice cream cones? Serve yourself soft serve cones and dishes, the perfect end to a delicious meal. I highly recommend the Old Greenbrier, well worth the trip outside the Huntsville city limits. So grab a group of friends and head on out, they definitely are big group friendly. I just have to add that I love the location! Buried in the heart of farmland surrounded by corn fields, it definitely added to the overall experience here. read more

A friend of mine who lives in Huntsville, AL took me to this place, along with his wife, which I assumed specializes in southern barbecue and southern cuisine. I arrived here on a brisk Monday after gunning it from Birmingham, AL on the i-65. My friend and I met up at the Huntsville Rocket Center and we just took his car, bombed it down I-565 and got lunch here at the Greenbrier restaurant. This restaurant is really a hole in the wall, if you don't know where it is. Obviously, if you are a local, you'd know. For us out-of-towners, coming here on your next visit to the Deep South and Huntsville, AL, you'd be wise to check this place out. Nothing like being in a basic rustic restaurant in Alabama to know how sometimes basic they tend to operate around there, especially when modern conveniences are not already noticeable, but they're there. The restaurant is clean, but as rustic as this place is, it has its charm and homespun flavor attached to it. This lunch visit to Greenbrier restaurant was as short and sweet, at most an hour. They have restrooms too. The Greenbrier restaurant is located at 27028 old highway 20 in nearby Madison, AL. It's really the west end of Huntsville. The menu was fairly straightforward, although picking out the ribs was self explanatory. I haven't had decent ribs in quite a while and decided to really indulge on this trip. I may not like it after getting back home and weighing myself, but it definitely was worth the trip to get authentic tastes and flavors while sightseeing with friends in Huntsville. The service here was quick, friendly, and had that southern charm that everyone loves to experience. The food came out within 10 minutes, which was pretty great, considering how much diners were at the restaurant already. They accept major credit cards, which is always a good thing. I thanked my Huntsville friends for lunch and it set the tone for later events for the day. The prices here is fairly good, considering that you're out here west of Huntsville and needing food that's not McDonald's, Burger King, or other fast foods options. As aforementioned before, I ordered the ribs, which turned out pretty tasty. No barbecue sauce is needed, since it was tasty and delicious already. I ended up taking 2 racks to go, after filling up on the complementary hush puppies, the 1 rack of ribs, and the side coleslaw accompanying the meal, and loading up on the liquid H2O. The hush puppies are always great, it's basically southern style tater tots, which is kind of epic. I didn't really enjoy the Cole slaw. More veggie than mayonnaise, but it was alright to a point. I guess it's technique on how you prepare such items. For what it's worth, venturing to Greenbrier restaurant may be in the cards for your next ticket up to Huntsville / Madison AL. While I know it's off the beaten path, I can attest to it being awesome and definitely worth checking out, since southern style northern Alabama barbecue finds itself into your heart and stomach with an idea, an airline ticket, and a rental car. I probably could say that the ambiance was nice, casual, and low key. Even my friend from Huntsville made it a point to say to the cashier that I was from Hawaii and he mentioned something about a family member living in Ewa Beach for one time or another. Definitely a place to have "chow" when in Huntsville, you will not be disappointed, nor leave hungry. Southernese BBQ - unlike North Carolina style cold slaw is not added to the MEAT. I usually just order the SMALL plate (with cold slaw and french fries) - believe me, small is LARGE enough. Ribs, pulled pork, chicken - all good, especially with the tasty hush puppies. Wash it all down with authentic Southernese sweet tea...Waitress is sweet as can be, what else would you expect in the South (although Huntsville is considered northern Alabama and not LA - lower Alabama and not Los Angeles). Decor is "rustic," authentic - I like the "old school," reminiscent of the late 50s/60s that brings back memories. Locals say that the two Greenbrier BBQ restaurants close by to each other are related by blood one way or another. THIS restaurant takes a bit of challenge to find. Take the Greenbrier exit (I think #3) and turn right (if driving on I-565 from the airport towards Birmingham). You will see a BIG sign that states GREENBRIER BBQ - you do not want to follow the sign. Instead, drive straight through the stop light, pass a church (on the left), cross over railroad tracks, until you come to a T-intersection/stop sign. This restaurant has been here for as long as I can remember. It's on my way home from work. I've gotten fried catfish and their half chicken as take out maybe twice in the last year, but have visited **numerous** times in my life. I've attended many parties in their banquet-type room and over the decades and changes in ownership, have just noticed a decline in the cleanliness. I just checked the ADPH web site and here is their currently posted health score as of ~ 2 months ago: Score: 78 | Smoke Free: Yes | Inspection date: 10/21/2014. I wish some owners with resources and drive would clean the place up a little bit. It has really declined in this one area over the decades. I think the outdoor painting on the west exterior wall is cute and maybe new-ish, but the back of the building always looks like it's about to collapse to me. I think since the other Greenbrier (BBQ restaurant around the corner) closed, I'll be sticking with Chuck Wagon. read more

I was tickled by the decor and the prices which were the most reasonable that I had ever experienced. We were seated immediately even though church just let out. Greenbrier has ample seating with multiple rooms and can easily accommodate any size party of your choosing. Our small party of two were seated in this back, wood paneled room. Think of your grandma's country basement. Wood chairs, blue and white vinyl tablecloths and a stuffed animal trout hanging from the ceiling finished off the decor. I did notice the free soft serve machine on the walk back though. We weren't necessarily there for the experience but rather for the food. We had a great recommendation and went for it. I opted for the pulled pork bbq sandwich ($3.50) with slaw and my fellow diner had the two meat sampler ($13.95). The pork was so tender and juicy that bbq sauce wasn't even required. We have been eating at Greenbrier for at least 30 years. Today I had the worst meal I've ever had. Normally the hush puppies are the star, light, flavorful, and crispy...and we've heard rumors that the Target distribution folks took coolers full home. Today however, the hush puppies were very much like a Captain D's. Dense, flavorless, and kind of nasty. I had catfish and one of my fish tasted like it had been doused in ammonia. That one stayed on the plate. The other one was muddy tasting which happens on occasion but it just didn't live up to the normally delicious fish I get there. Did they change suppliers? Did they change ownership? Even the pickles on the coleslaw tasted different. It just wasn't a good meal. My husband got fish and pork and the pork was good but his fish filets were muddy tasting too. No, we don't have Covid so our taste buds are working fine. I guess this is one of the occasional slumps that hit a restaurant but even in the past when they had a slump, their hush puppies were the reason to go. I think I'll be taking a several month hiatus from eating there. So sad. One of my favorite places and I just don't want to go back for a while. If you want a bucket of prefabbed deep fried freezer burned slop, then this is the place to be. The staff was extremely nice and the unsweetened tea wasn't sour (hard to find in 'Bama). The theme of this restaurant is old time, unkept, huge, flavorless portions. The kind of place that makes you ask yourself, "why am I eating this garbage? It doesn't taste good and I may get sick." The man at the checkout was extremely rude. Swiped my card and threw it at the counter in front of me, then rudely asked, "you gonna tip?" The feel of the establishment and his attitude made me want to ask if the waitress would get the tip or the owner. I tipped the usual % just in case she actually did get it.
