Stopped in to pick up a bike bell that I wanted, and Green Machine was one of the stockiest listed for Spurcycle. They're right in the neighborhood, so I'm glad I got to support a local business (Green Machine) whilst also supporting a "local" business (I'm pretty sure I learned Spurcycle is based in Oregon, where I'm from). Lots of stuff in the shop, and I may stop by again to get a bike pump. They do charge a 3% surcharge for credit cards, so either take cash or be prepared to pay the surcharge. read more

Long overdue review here. I've been going to Green Machine for a few years now, first for basic maintenance and accessories for my Soma bike and earlier this year with my kiddo to buy a cargo bike. Ezra was super helpful with advice on our different options, was happy to let us test-ride all the cargo bikes in the store, and then to customize the Xtracycle we ended up purchasing. Green Machine has a great selection of high-quality bikes and accessories for city cyclists, both adults and kids. The guy who runs this shop is inexplicably rude. When I knocked he came out, and in an exasperated voice told me he was working on something and could I wait. I couldn't, as I was on a lunch break, and he's only open for one hour, from 11 to Noon. As I was walking away he told me "this isn't McDonald's." I came from Milwaukee to test ride a particular bicycle brand, which was not available in Milwaukee. I visited the shop on a weekend and found one of the store employees, Ezra, to be very helpful and informative. Despite having other customers in the store, he did not rush me and answered many of my questions. He provided me with two bicycles to try, as well as a route to ride to test them out. He was passionate about bicycles and you could tell that he wanted to provide you with a bicycle that was functional and met your needs. This is one of those way overpriced bike shops. Cost me over $250 to get my $100 bike fixed and they didn't even replace the inner tubes and beat up air valves, which BTW went flat while i was out on a ride (nothing worse). I brought it by the shop w the flat tires to get some air or see why they didn't service the bike properly when they "tuned" it up. The owner dude slammed the door in my face for accidentally showing up 15 minutes before the shop had officially opened up. I Will NEVER go back after that. Who would. Just go to Cozy's down the street... Cozy's customer service is polite and professional. or... Go somewhere else, anywhere else but Green Machines. read more

TERRIBLE. Avoid this place: there's many more bike shops you can spend your money at. My friend felt very disrespected.

This place is a rip-off. They will try to persuade you that your bike needs a complete overhaul, so they can make extra money on unnecessary repairs. This happened to me twice here. Won't happen again. In the end I went to another bike shop in the area and got my bike fixed for much less. Also, because of COVID, they can't fix it right away, but you have to make an appointment and wait for like a month to get your bike fixed. read more

I only put this as 2 star so more people would read it. I moved to Portland a year ago & just tried to get my bike put together again after a year off of cycling. I was riding a new scooter around a new city. I was very excited to have my baby back, HOWEVER, when my bike was shipped or before I brought it to the The Green Machine, there was a crack in my frame, making it unrideable. The Green Machine either cracked my bike frame or failed to tell me what these experienced Portland bike mechanics said was a, "very noticeable, easy to spot crack". The Green Machine took my money and shipped my cracked bike anyways. These mechanics felt they had the right to judge The Green Machine shop based on the fact that they didn't even clean my bike after they were supposed to tune it up (??? Unheard of) & before it was shipped to my new place in Portland. Would NEVER recommend this place to anyone. Thought I was helping my local bike shop in my old neighborhood. Turns out I should've gone to the place I trusted most while living in Chicago, Roscoe Village Cycles. read more

I came in super confused with the wrong idea of what tubes I needed to replace on my bike, and the staff was extremely helpful in explaining what I was looking for and how best to make sure I knew how to access the correct info for the next time. They were kind, and as a young woman, I frequently get talked down to at bike shops and mechanics, but the staff at Green Machine was patient, made sure not to sound like they were mansplaining, and super helpful. It sounded like they were pretty busy so I would definitely try to schedule any maintenance you need in advance. They also insist on providing accurate estimates only after looking at the bike, which means you know they are being honest and that you won't get hit with expensive surprises later on. I took my bike to Ezra several times for various simple jobs, and each time he interacted with me with condescending disdain. He also charges arbitrarily based on his (frequently petulant and gloomy) mood. He knows what he's doing with a bike, but so do other mechanics in Chicago. Fantastic, cheap, fast, helpful (almost to a fault) -- Green Machine Cycles is my favorite shop on the north side by a long shot. I brought in a bike that a nearby shop had just done some really low-quality work on, with dangerously tuned brakes, and Green Machine got it good as new in no time. Took my new and perfectly good bike in for one of their tuneups and came away with a chain that now slips every time I need to pedal hard. So I just skimmed through the reviews and it seems like my opinion is consistent with other yelpers'. Had a flat tire, brought my bike in. The first guy, who I got to talk was condescending and had an unfriendly demeanor. I felt as if I should apologize for bringing him my business. I thought, ok, he's the guy who does the dirty work and he does not have the people skills. But no, he handed my bike off to another dude and continued to just roam around more or less. The guy who ended up replacing my tire, checking the other one, etc, was totally different - explained things, answered my questions, was very friendly. I wasn't there to make friends, so the chit chat was minimum. Pleasantries really. While my invoice was being processed, I noticed that dude #1 was the same way to dude #2 (his co-worker) as he was to me. That really put me off. Is he the boss, maybe? Hence his sense of entitlement? What I came in for was fixed - 5 stars. Customer service was 1 and 5, so 3 in average. But... I left this place trying to hurry back to work, so I didn't pay too much attention until I was further away from the shop - my mirror was loose. That was not an issue before. Now, the mirror would not stay in place when I adjusted it. It would just flop. Needless to say, I was way too busy for the next weeks and not in the neighborhood, so I let this go. Overpriced and Crappy work.  DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!!!! We were very excited to have a shop so close to our new apartment.  We went in shortly after we moved in and I felt their merchandise was rather overpriced.  It's in a nicer neighborhood with higher rents than our old neighborhood, so I cut them some slack. A few months later we took my girlfriend's bike in for a tune up and repair.  The quote was decent so we were okay with it. Took my bike in recently and the store was locked up with a sign to wait behind the line on the sidewalk about 6 feet away.  The guy wouldn't even open the door until we were completely behind it.  This was in the midst of the COVID outbreak so again, I cut some slack. He said to email my info and they would email in a day or two with what it needed.  They were rather busy so I understood this. 5 days later I hadn't heard from them so I replied to the confirmation email that they had received my bike on day 1.  3 hours later they get back to me with a huge list of what needed to be fixed.  My bike had been in storage for a few years so I was expecting a bit of work.  They recommend I replace a bunch of parts that I didn't feel needed it.  but my bike is over 7 years old and was used a lot for about 4 of those years including several Centuries, so I figured better to get the repairs and not worry later.  I was told it would be ready by the end of the week.  THIS is all thy kept their word on.  I was sent a email that my bike was on the rack and they would know more in a few hours.  5 hours later I received a call that it was done and an email was sent with the amount and how to pay using a credit card or PayPal.  I still hadn't received an email a half an hour later, so I called and no one answered.  I left a voicemail and I emailed asking for the link. 45 minutes later I get an email with the link and invoice.  The invoice said the parts for would be detailed on the work order, but I never received one (I even asked for it when I picked it up and was told it was on the link they sent).  I was also charged over $100 more than I was quoted.  My girlfriend then told me that they charged her about $40 more than she was quoted when she picked up her bike.Here is the best part.  On my first ride it road smooth until I switched gears.  Then there was a loud clicking from the rear derailer in every gear.  The highest gear was not so loud but still clicked.    This is THE WORST experience I have ever had with a bike shop. The only reason they got 1 start is because there is not an option for NO STARS.  I should have stuck with Kozy's and will from here on. read more

This place was recommended to me by an avid biker friend of mine. I only ride my bike to and from work, and occasionally on a bike path. I brought my bike in because my bottom bracket had started to sound bad. I figured that while I was here, I would have the rest of my bike checked out. The guy who met me at the door got the story (clunking sound in the pedals, bad front brake, please look at everything). He took the bike to the back area and it got looked at by the next person. Here I was told that my front brake line may need replacing and i could use a general tune up. Otherwise my bike looks pretty good. "it should run you at most $80-$90 if the brake line needs to be replaced." "what about the bottom bracket?" I ask. (You know, what brought me here in the first place.) "Oh, I wasn't told I needed to look at that" (first sign of poor communication in the staff).. goes to look.. "ok, we'll need to check that out, but at most you should have to pay maybe $110." I say great. Get told it will be ready in 5 days, I'll get a call to pick it up. 5 days later I get an email receipt/invoice 10 minutes before store closing. I leave my bike until the weekend. Invoice says, "BB did not need to be replaced. total charge - $110, quoted $120." When I do pick it up, I pay, I ride away. things sound good for about 2 blocks and then the same bottom bracket clunking starts again. Great. I bring it back - the guys says "Oh, we didn't know it needed to be replaced. Looks like they installed the original cross threaded to the frame." (Well great, what happened to the last 2 people I told about it? And who is "they"? The shop? The original manufacturer of my 8 year old bike?) Then, "you'll need to buy the new part and a little extra for us to put it in it." At this point I just want to be done. So I wait another hour, pay for parts AND labor (which could have been avoided if the work was done right the first time). My $110 repair turned into $170 and I will not be bringing my bike back. My bike works great now, but the staff needs to communicate better and work on the accuracy of quotes. Whats funny is that the new receipt even says "Chase and face shell. Install new BB. Was part of a tune up in which we should have replaced old part." Thanks guys. read more

I decided to try them out to have my two juvenile bikes and my wife's bike tuned up for the season. They were able to have the bikes ready in the expected timeframe without any issues. They even were able to find hard to find bike parts for my kids' bikes that are not normally carried at other shops (think pink streamers and pink handle bar grips). read more

This is my neighborhood shop and they are great. I have only used them for service and accessories. They have a limited number of new bikes and they specialize in urban commuting solutions. They are knowledgeable and thoughtful with their advice. Most recently, I needed a full tune up before a 100 mile ride and they were quick to get it done and it rode like it was new. Ezra was who I worked with. They are a bit crusty and opinionated, but I like that. read more

I commute on my (inexpensive) bike all through the winter, and need work done pretty regularly, so I feel very lucky to have Green Machine just a couple of blocks from home. There may be shops where you can get things done more quickly (it's not a big place, so if you need a specific replacement, they'll likely have to order it), but the prices are very fair and Ezra is certainly an expert. Being that I ride around on what many cyclists would consider a hunk of junk, I run the risk of condescension at every bike shop I go to, but there's not an ounce of that at Green Machine. No judgment...just good, reliable help. I'll stop into other shops if I have an issue on my route, but I'll only take my bike to Ezra for major work. read more

Live in the neighborhood and have tried several times to use this bike shop. With 4 kids we could keep them busy. They are condescending expensive and act as if they are the only experts in their field. This is fine but yet they make you feel as you are lucky to have them work on your bike. Pricing is high as well. And you never come out of there feeling like you had great service. The opposite. You feel like you just overpaid for average service. We like to support local businesses but won't be giving this place anymore of our business. I'd rather travel to get our bikes serviced. read more

I walked into this bike shop because it was conveniently located and I was having issues with my bike. I came in on a slow Saturday afternoon. I spoke with Charlie, who met me with an angry demeanor. He took my bike and told me to wait. Twenty minutes later, he told me that my bike needed a complete re-haul and that it would take hours to fix it. The thing is- he wasn't saying anything wrong- I understood that my bike needed some fixing up, but it's still a great bike. Charlie's unpleasant, aggressive attitude is what ultimately turned me away. He told me I would need several new parts and it would take hours of labor to fix up my bike, and he quoted me up to 300 dollars. He said that it could take anywhere from a week to two weeks to get the bike fixed. It felt like he didn't want my business based on this interaction. He honestly was bike-shaming me. I ended up going to one of my favorite bike shops, Heritage Bicycle shop, where they greeted me with friendly face, and told me it would cost 100 dollars for the new parts and labor all together! They also said it would take no longer than three days to get my bike back to me. I will not be going back to Green Machine Cycles, even though it's closer in proximity, I would rather go somewhere where customer service and clientele trust is valued! read more

I came in to the store earlier today, I was in a blue shirt and a bandanna and I was interested in some advice for my squeaky bike. You had a long beard and short-ish brown and grey hair. Although I didn't know you looked like that for the first 15 minutes of my visit, because the door was locked andy there was a note that read "back in 5." And it's funny you should have mentioned, because I did "start my little stop watch" as you asked me when I informed you how long I had been waiting. I arrived at 1:52pm and you opened the door at 2:06. If I'm not mistaken that is 14 minutes (not 15, you're right) Im really sorry I didn't have a witticism prepared when you asked me that, I'm just not used to people being such d-bags to me within 3 minutes of making my acquaintance. I totally understand that you can't remotely diagnose problems with bikes, but I'm guessing there are limited diagnoses to a squeaky chain. And contrary to your comparison, bicycle maintenance is not the same as what doctors do, my dear. I know you aren't clairvoyant, and my feeble attempts at humor (what?! They told me you were clairvoyant!) were not me having fun with you but rather my way of expressing how uncomfortable I was with your terrible customer service (I.e. Making me wait for 15 minutes, not apologizing and immediately being dismissive, arrogant and the rudest!). I walked my winter weary bike over to Green Machine and was immediately greeted by Ezra. Not that I'm looking for that, but it's always nice to be acknowledged. That said, my tires were dead flat and he hand-pumped air into them and checked the tubes, air nozzle, etc. I also needed a battery replacement for my bike computer. That was a bit of an effort on his part, but no problem. BTW, the battery was 1/2 the price of a drug store! With a bit of labor, my bike is back to A-OK!
