A Green Line train on the E branch
    Bruce K.

I've been giving the E branch a bit of a workout lately and I can now announce that I have reviewed each of the stops on this branch of the Green Line. From Lechmere (the only stop in Cambridge) to Heath Circle, the line visits 20 stations and runs 5.4 miles. It is the shortest of the branches of the Green Line. The E branch runs down Huntington Avenue and the section between Brigham Circle and Heath Street is the only remaining section of street-running tracks in regular use by the MBTA. At Northeastern, the aptly-named Northeastern Incline allows the train to descend into tunnels where it meets up with the other Green Line branches. At this time, the E branch is the only one that goes all the way to Lechmere, while the other branches terminate at Park Street or Government Center. There was a time that the E branch was to be extended much beyond its current termination at Heath Street perhaps as far as Hyde Square in Jamaica Plain. However there is nothing firm about it happening. Coming from Los Angeles where I live with transportation that's struggling, Boston's system is a breath of fresh air. Not perfect, there are some delays and a bit of confusion - I'd get over it fast if I'd live there! But it's reliable, comes fast, takes you everywhere in the city, great connections. You can take it to and from the Airport (Logan) which it's a major plus! Pretty fast and easy. It is the oldest in USA (Bolyston station has a small nice museum inside, very cool!), so many stops don't have AC, but they have fans. Staff- some folks nice and helpful, some just OK. Not the cleanest, a tad squeaky, but it extends to ferry lines as well. A few nitpicks, but a solid transportation system that takes you everywhere. Love the lines that take you above ground. I got a pass on a Charlie Card and I used it a lot during my Boston visit. My husband lived here in college and told me it's still has the same smell. Nothing bad for him. More like Proust's madeleine.

We were here for 5 days and bought the 7 day pass. This got us full access to the trains, buses and ferries for our entire trip. We stayed in an AirBnB close to Cambridge and took the Red Line into the city everyday. From there we also took the Green Line multiple times and the Blue Line to get to the airport. If you don't mind public transportation and walking just a short distance to where you need to go, the Charlie Card is well worth the value and even though we had to buy the 7 day pass for a 5 day visit, we got our money worth and then some. We checked Uber some days and the price of one Uber was the same as the Charlie Card for a week.

Note that the store is outside the ticketed area. If you're a passenger arriving at the Downtown Crossing Station, you'll see prominent signs directing you to an exit and then on to the store. I showed up at the store with a pretty large stack of old Charlie tickets. My aim was to consolidate everything onto a Charlie card. More precisely (and here comes the full disclosure part of the review), I was aiming for a senior card (yikes!) The Charlie Card Store could well have been like the DMV. It wasn't!! After I explained my mission to the staff member at the entrance, I was given a paper ticket with a number on it. To my happy surprise, that number was called within three or four minutes. I soon found myself being photographed for my permanent (senior) Charlie Card. That card was not produced for me on the spot -- it came in the mail a few weeks later. For immediate use, I was given a temporary senior card that held most of my accumulate ticket value, along with a non-senior Charlie card to hold the rest. I was in and out of the Charlie Store in something like ten minutes. I really appreciated the great service!
