Upon arrival at South Station bus driver informs me that there will be 2 stops so it's NOT DIRECT and so I started researching other options and found out my 1:15 that was cancelled was NOW SHOWING AVAILABLE. WTF!!!! but we're here so we get on the 8:55 only to be told we don't have assigned seats so after 3 attempts of sitting and being moved the driver nicely accommodated us up front because he noticed my frustration. Nevertheless, I hope we make it safely to NY on this run down bus with tattered seats, missing toilet seat and barely working heat. I don't know what I expect from you guys but at the very least a reimbursement for the Uber would be nice and compensation for the loss of sleep if possible. This experience deserves some news air time though because I expected better from you Greyhound. Maybe I'll call my reporter friend at WHDH ‍ but rn I just pray this rattling bus gets us to NJ in one piece. That was only the ride there. Ride coming back made an unexpected stop which made us 30 minutes late which then made us miss our commuter rail.

I wanted to take a quick trip to Boston between Christmas and New Year's and didn't want to deal with parking in the middle of the city. I purchased my ticket in person at the NYC office on 12/20 for a trip on the morning of 12/26. The 10AM bus to Boston was $25 (which matched the pricing they showed online). Good thing I purchased early because when I arrived to check it that morning, there was a handwritten note saying that due to the holidays, the fixed price for that day would be $40. I wasn't sure what time I would be heading back to NYC on Friday but after seeing this same day pricing change, I decided to book my return ticket at this point to lock in the cost. It was $30 for the return trip and again, it matched what the website had shown the week before. Lucky Star has a decent waiting area where you can get snacks and use the restroom before your trip. This is light years better than the Megabus "terminal" near the Javits Center on 34th St. which is outdoors and exposed to the elements. The bus arrived about 20 mins before departure time and we started to load about 15 min before. I noticed that there was no one around to help with the loading of the luggage on to the bottom deck of the bus. So if you have a ton of stuff or a physical issue that will cause problems doing this, be prepared. The bus itself was pretty new and clean. The seats were in good condition and not worn. Each row had a plastic bag attached to the handle for your garbage. There was no evidence of garbage from the previous trip so that means it was cleaned before being dispatched for our trip. Some people have mentioned outlets on the bus but their location was not obvious to me. I was not about to stick my hands around and under the seat looking for it, who knows what I'd find! I came prepared with an external battery pack anyway. The bus was about 2/3's full and lucky for me I had an empty seat next to me for the trip so I could spread out a bit. The passengers were a mix of all ages and nationalities but most important to me was that they were all QUIET, no yakking on their phones. Due to the light traffic the day after Xmas, we were soon out of the city and on I-95 headed north. We did hit a few pockets of traffic but the driver expertly got off and on the highway to avoid the most serious of delays. He kept a good consistent pace and was very smooth at the controls. There is a 15 min bathroom and snack break at a Burger King off the highway about 2 hours into the trip. We arrive at Boston South Station in a little over four hours from NYC. On a side note, I can't believe how dirty some people are. My seat was in the middle of the bus and I waited for the majority of people to get off before I started to move. There was garbage and food wrappers all over the place and under the seats. I would hate to be the person to have to clean up after that! For the return trip, be sure to check in at the Lucky Star counter in the terminal before making your way to the bus ramps. The Lucky Star ramp is the last one at the end of the terminal. I made the mistake of assuming the booth they had there at the ramp would be able to check you in but nope. At the check in counter I again noticed a handwritten sign that on demand tickets for that day were $40. Not sure how typical this is, but the lesson here is to book your tickets ahead of time if at all possible. Based on other reviewers here, the refund policy is a mess or non-existent but that's the price you pay for saving a few bucks I guess. The bus for the ride back was again fairly new and clean. The loading process was quick and orderly and soon we were in Friday afternoon traffic out of Boston. We arrived in NYC in a little over 5 hours due to traffic. Again I think the driver did a great job with detours around the biggest jams and keeping the ride smooth. At the 2.5 hour mark, we have the same break at the highway Burger King. Use common sense and take advantage of the facilities if you're going to be arriving in NYC during rush hour! One final note when we arrived back at the NYC terminal. My luggage had somehow rolled/skidded all the way to the far end of the bus in the luggage area. Remember how I said no one was around to help with luggage? Well, this not so young guy had to hunch over with a huge backpack and laptop in one hand to crab walk my way to the other side of the bus while trying to avoid putting my knees down on the dirty loading floor. I managed to do it without banging my head or getting my backpack caught on anything. I'm sure it would've made for a very funny video! Bottom line: I was pleasantly surprised at the trip especially compared to Megabus (which I took last year to Boston) and wouldn't hesitate to use them again. Book tickets early to save a few bucks but expect no refunds if your plans change!

The driver is really friendly in that surly, "I-was-born-in-Chelsea-so-don't-expect-me-to-give-a-shit-because-it's-7am-and-I've-already-been-drinking," sort of way. Despite having to navigate the Union Square traffic melee both directions on its route, it somehow always arrives on time, except on weekdays, when it doesn't bother to show up at all. This tends to happen modt often on Fridays (like this one), and is completely unannounced, so I'll assume it's because the MBTA literally has only one driver available for this route and doesn't bother to find a replacement for our Chelsea boy who just spent a long weekend hugging porcelain in the bathroom of the Tavern at the End of the World. I've also had the pleasure of taking this bus in the middle of the day, when I am literally the only rider for the entire route. It was really creepy and the bus smelled like bad gin and I wouldn't recommend it. If the MBTA were to do something actually useful, like hire a systems analyst, then they might figure out that running routes like this north of the river in the middle of the day when everyone is at work downtown is a huge waste of money. The savings could then be used to not only pay that systems analyst's crappy government salary, but also would allow the 85 to run later at night when people actually need it, and on weekends, again, when people actually need it.

It's a commuter bus line that runs until around 7:30pm only Monday through Friday. I hate this bus because it seems to run on a random schedule that changes daily. This is mostly because there's one bus that runs in a loop and it gets stuck in traffic going through Union Square. Also, because there's only one bus, it only runs about every 40 minutes in the morning - so your choices are 8:10 or 8:40 (give or take a few minutes). Also, the current bus driver is seriously the most surly individual on the planet. A few weeks ago the buzzer was broken and he just skipped a lot of the stops near/around Union Square. A woman was standing near the front told him so and he said "Do I LOOK like a mind reader?" and when she explained that standing near the front should signal that she wanted to get off he said "Oh yea? And how'd that work out for you?". So, if you don't mind the nasty driver and random arrival times - the 85 bus is a pretty convenient route to get you from Somerville to Cambridge.

F you, 86. You are…read morethe worst bus line ever. You come infrequently-- only every 30 minutes in off-peak hours, and every 45-60 on the weekends. You are irregular, sometimes showing up, sometimes not. You never know what's in that damn pinata. You've made me walk from Union Square to Harvard in desperation more times than is appropriate, and that's a long damn walk. Your inexcusable infrequency and constant tardiness are made that much more miserable given that you are one of Union Square residents' only modes of public transport. Even though you can't be a real Line, or even a fake Line a la Silver, you could at least be a better damn bus. I would like to ask for an upgrade to the double-decker buses with nice seating options like the 73 but I wouldn't dare. I've heard you're no better on the other end of your route. I once saw you in Allston and I freaked out. You need to shorten your route or add more buses. Or both. Or, you could die, and we could all hope you would be reborn a Phoenix in any of the forms I listed above. You get a pity star just for existing, but that's it. I am so fed up with you.

And yet, I cannot give you a withering 1 star review, if only because you do spare me the horrorshow that is the claustrophobic crawl of the 70. Going up one stop to Harvard and waiting 45 minutes for a bus which may or may not ever come is totally worth the extra time, compared to hellride that awaits in Central. Plus, it has helped me immeasurably hone my patience to something approaching godly. And plus, it affords me a good number of LOLz doing some observational work on Hipsters waiting for the 66 at the same bus stop, without having to actually get on the 66 with them.
