Oak Grove is the northern terminus of the MBTA Orange Line and with that comes a good sized commuter parking lot nearby. Surprisingly, the station has no services such as a coffee shop and there isn't very much nearby at all either. It has a single entrance and exit, which is also unusual. The station is in surprisingly good condition and repair. The station is an island platform and it is fully handicapped accessible. There are automated machines in the ticketing lobby for purchasing Charlie Tickets and adding value to Charlie Cards. There is an audible announcement of the next train to depart to Forest Hills and this is helpful in case you're close enough to run for it. There is also a visual board when you're on the platform. As mentioned, this is the terminus for the Orange Line. The next inbound station is Malden Center. read more

Oak Gove would be considered my "home" station. I love it a lot and the main reason is; first/last stop.. what's not to love on a busy morning commute. First pick.. empty train. Not trying to cram in 3 stops later.. OKAY! Two entrances works for me so it's not super busy with everyone trying to get into one area, helpful. I go in the front area where my dad drops me off or where the 132 drops. I love the front parking when you're lucky. Back is cool too, but the front is so VIP. I feel silly rating a train station, but I'm doing it. I'm not generally an Orange Line traveler, nor do I head to Oak Grove often (in fact, I went for the first time in 6 years last week) but I was pretty impressed with the station. Let me tell you why: the MBTA Police Officers were super friendly (I saw them helping clueless folks with a smile), the station was very clean, and there's an inside (helpful when it's raining, snowing, hailing, or just freezing outside and you're waiting for a ride). read more

If I could give this station a zero I would, especially the treatment I received by any MBTA workers before using my charlie to enter to use the train. This lovely (sarcasm) man out of the blue called me racist because i was wearing an Irish flag shirt. Like wow I did not even say anything to the guy, maybe because I was showing my pride and that I am white offended him. I really don't know. Rudest guy alive, because before tapping my Charlie card, I was going to say "Have a nice day!" but this is before he told me I was a racist, after looking at my Irish flag sweatshirt. Used Oak Grove for the first time today (weekend trip into Boston, wanted something more flexible than the commuter rail). Easy in, easy out, parking was cheaper than my local commuter rail lot and the ticket in was a third of the cost.... About $10 for my family of 4. Seriously though some of the reviews here are useless in providing useful info on the station. Not enough spaces on weekdays...it is good info but it's MBTA wide and not an Oak Grove phenomenon. Only one entrance..... like most MBTA lots. Had to run for the platform.... like at least one person at every station at every departure does because they were running late for one reason or another (we've all been there... has nothing to do with Oak Grove) And my favorite, the 2 stars because the user didn't have a smart phone and couldn't figure out Pay by Phone which is in place at just about every MBTA lot.... (psst - MBTA will just mail you the bill + $0.50 which basically covers the postage). Did you ever find that under $10 parking near Long Wharf? read more

Parking: This station advertises 800 parking spots; plenty to go around, right? That's what I thought too. The lot fills up by 7am with all the people commuting from further up north. At 7, you might be able to find a spot along the street (outside the lot), maybe a 7-8 minute walk away from the station, but that's if you're really lucky. Parking is $6 per day. Subway: The benefit of going to this station is that you're guaranteed a seat every morning as this is the first step on the Orange Line. If you go to Malden Station, you have about a 50/50 chance of getting a seat, but after that you're pretty much out of luck. Every morning i'm able to snag a corner seat far away from the exit and doze off until I get to Back Bay. Getting these seats allows me to avoid all of the pushing, shoving, and general ruckus as people in later stops fight to get on the train. Don't worry about timing the subway (you really can't time it even if you try), but it usually comes every 6-7 minutes. Buses: Buses come right outside of both sides of the station and there are indoor waiting areas where you can stand and wait for your bus. Lines get pretty long for the buses, but I've never seen an instance in which a person can't get on the bus. The buses always run late, but I've found that the OkCommuter app is generally pretty accurate in predicting when the buses will come. read more

This is a review of the Oak Grove station, not MBTA service, not a lack of Starbucks conveniently located nearby or security personnel that seem more guilty than helpful. First off, this is the end of the orange line headed north. That means inbound to Boston it's the first stop - you almost always get your pick of train car and seat. That also means it's the last stop outbound, which most of the time means standing until most of the trip is over. That also means if you fall asleep you don't wake up in Timbuktu. Because this train services a pretty dense population area, it is crowded during rush hour. Parking can be rough during weekday mornings - you'll need to get there early (7 to 7:30AM) if you want to be sure you have a spot. There is a nice drop off area that usually runs very smoothly. There is usually one or two taxis available there any time of day. There is a less used entrance on Washington Street. There is no parking or and a smaller drop off on that side, but if you're walking it's an option. read more

I agree with Cristina, this station gets the job done and is extremely convenient in terms of location, parking and arrival/departure frequency. It costs $5.50 to park here, and is really convenient if coming from the North Shore heading into Boston. It typically takes about 10-15min to get to North Station, and like I said, the trains are on time and by the same token, not apt to sit there and wait around. If you like fast service, you have to expect to be fast yourself to get to the train when it comes in and not assume it will stick around for 15min or so because it isn't the hustling green or red line. If you are going to do anything in Boston that is of a "mass" nature (eg I went to the Bruins parade a few weeks back), use this stop, even if you live down a few stops in Malden or Somerville. It is worth the extra time built in to get to the first stop on the line, because from experience, if the train is full, you will be one of the commuters at Malden, Sullivan, Wellington, etc that has to stand there and realize there is no room left as everyone piled on at Oak Grove. Also, if you are in dire straits, at the top of the stairs when coming from the tracks, on the right, is a hallway that leads to a restroom. Again, only if in dire straits...this is the T folks, not the Ritz. Be prepared. :D read more

I live equidistant between the Oak Grove and Malden Center T stations. Well, technically, I have a much closer and straight walk to Malden Center. I very rarely take the T (only when my car is in the shop or if there is a vehicle ban near where I work) but when I do, I ALWAYS walk to Oak Grove. It is the first stop on the Orange line and I always get a seat. This station is always clean, well maintained and I always see security. Parking is rough, but if you get there early enough you have a shot at one. It is an above ground station but covered so you're protected from the elements. Being a New Yorker, I don't find the T particularly effective or efficient in general, but Oak Grove is a good place to be and definitely worth an added walk and travel time. read more

Oak Grove station is frustrating for those that live nearby. There should really be two station entrances for those that live to the north. My walk time adds almost five minutes because of this and it overcrowds during rush hour. The platform was leaking water all over the escalator at the end of this winter and wasn't fixed for quite a while (so everyone had to cram into the stairs). That being said, this is the MBTA, where excellence is optional and thus nonexistent. The station is serviceable and helps get me to where I need to go, but it's not A-ok. read more

Hoo rah. So - the old coffee shop thing in this station is now GONE. Good luck getting a parking space here before 6:30 AM. INSANE amount of traffic out on Pleasant Street during rush hour. It's a madhouse with all the cars and people and buses and idiots. I don't think the 132 bus has ever been on time in my entire life. It stops here. Supposedly... The only saving grace of this station is that the subway cars are always here cause it's the end of the line so you don't freeze your butt off waiting for one to show up. I live in the exurbs and met up with a friend from north of Boston for an excursion into the city. She suggested taking the train from this station. There is no person working. Instead you are forced to use a mobile phone app. I do not have a smart phone so she put the app on her phone and added my license plate number as well as her own. When we got to the station the app kept timing out when we tried to use it. Finally the transaction went through and she was charged, but I never saw a screen where she selected which of the license plates on her account she wanted to pay for. We were both looking at her phone trying to get the program to work. So I hope I don't get a ticket in the mail. EZPass is aptly named because it is easy. This is not. My car was not damaged, and I avoided the hassle of downtown traffic, but a $9 Saturday rate at a garage near Long Wharf would have been cheaper than $6 parking here plus 2 fares 2 ways. This is not affordable transportation in my book, despite my state tax dollars subsidizing the MBTA, which disproportionately benefits Bostonians at the expense of other parts of the state. read more

this station is neat and clean. MBTA officers are often very helpful. However, one thing to improve is the bell that rings way too loud. I have seen people cover their ears when get passed the door which is a painful experience when a train is about to leave. read more

Unless you show up at 6 am in the morning you can forget about finding a parking space.

If you drive here and look for a place to park.. you better get here before 8:30-9:00AM because it gets PACKED and there's no place to park at all. Besides that, it's an end of the line stop which is nice and it has a little food stand on the inside. Overall good clean stop. read more

Where do you park? There is no parking at this station, it's ridiculous, and the parking lot is always full. When are they going to enlarge this lot or add a parking garage for the T riders? There are more and more people taking the T but they can't accommodate you unless you have an early morning job start!!! So frustrated!!! read more

So, prior reviews have said this station offers 800 parking spots, and they are filled by 7:00-7:30AM each morning. I would ask the MBTA if they plan on building a parking structure here to handle more cars? Route 1 is a disaster most mornings with traffic. Wouldn't it be better to get cars to park at this station, and have drivers use the train service? It would get more cars off the road, and add $$ to the MBTA coffers. Yesterday, I had to park sideways into a snow bank, which was the last possible spot at this station. Even though it was 9:00AM...why is this acceptable to voters, and people who care a little about the environment? I would ask those who read this to contact your elected officials...and ask them why the northern terminus of the Orange Line has so few spots? IF there is any alternate spot to park, there is not one sign to indicate that, and there are no workers that I saw where you might ask a question. I have to say, I throughly enjoy Oak Grove Station. It's about a 40 minute walk from my house, as compared to the 20-25 minute walk to Malden Center, so I only go here when I am feeling ambitious. But it's nice to come here when the overwhelmingness of Malden Center is too much to handle. Half of the time, it's deserted. Plus, with the train sitting right there, there's no wait either! I'm sure if I had to come here all the time, I might not like it as much, but as a once-in-a-while sorta place, I greatly enjoy Oak Grove. read more

Great service. However, one particularly irksome feature, or lack thereof, is the absence of a "down" escalator on the Main street side. I frequently arrive home from the local merchants and supermarkets with a two-wheeled cart that is pretty akward to maneuver down the steps. I can't imagine what the planners were thinking that they would not only include an escalator on this side of the station; or at least have the elevator let out on this both sides (street & parking lot sides). Instead the elevator is lets out onto the parking lot, where people who have cars are the least in need of this service. read more
