After having a tasty snack at Pizza Pilgrims, went to the two story Rolling Stones store which was my favorite place on Carnaby Street. A bunch of boutique shops and found one bathroom and a drinking fountain. There was an old English style red phone booth containing an unspeakable object on the floor inside, good conversation piece for the rest of my trip. Welcome to London.

For any one of my friends traveling into London I always recommend veering off a little to Carnaby. Over the years some shops have come and go but some of my favorites remain open. I'm a huge Great Frog lover and their shop is nearby, also for us rock n rollers I can't help stopping into The Rolling Stones Uk store. Lots of major branded stores but also cute local vendors and stores. It's a very walkable street and safe. Plenty busy so come earlier in the day to beat the crowds. Another pro tip is catching a reservation at dishshoom down here as I've found it easier to snag a reservation here than at their other locations. Plenty of dining options though and local stalls like Starbucks and Joe & the juice. It's a touristy street of shops but I love it - definitely bookmark this area on your must shop / see list when on this side of town.

They have a good selection of hats (caps, Berets, wide brims, bowlers), T-shirts, hoodies, and stuffed animals among things. Their basement also sells roller luggage. Another funny thing I saw was they had a security guard downstairs, but originally I thought he was a cardboard cutout from a distance since he was standing motionless next to a poster of someone wearing the exact same uniform. I had to do a double take but thought it was a cool trick to blend into the surroundings like that. I bought about $50£ worth of stuff - would make good souvenirs or random last-minute Christmas gifts. I couldn't find any cute stuffed English Bulldogs, so I hope my wife likes the Hello Kitty wearing Union Jack I picked.

Here's the spot for everything you need to bring back to the kiddies! Tshirts. Sweaters (jumpers). Hoodies. Mugs. Decals (stickers). Tiles. Posters. Name tags. Fridge magnets. Pens. Pot holders. You name it, they have it here. The selection is MASSIVE. And not just Union Flags. They have Beatles and Monty Python and even Paddington Bear stuff! It's not cheap, but it is certainly inexpensive. There's a helpful entrance from the Piccadilly Circus Tube so you don't have to go outside in the (what, again?) rain.

One little browse around here is sure to put a smile on your face, if nothing else. As has been pointed out by fellow Qypers, there's not much in here that serves any purpose other than to look pretty, make you chuckle or keep you mildly entertained for an hour or so. As well as branded stuff, like their range of Moomin bags, pencil cases, purses and cuddly toys (which, incidentally, I find VERY freaky) and the obligatory 'Keep Calm and Carry On' merchandise that's absolutely everywhere at the moment, they've also got lots of quirky, novelty bits. My current favourites are a pair of wind-up robot salt and pepper shakers necessary? Not in the slightest. Hilarious? Totally. They epitomise the entire point of this shop funny, largely pointless and utterly brilliant.

The Market is picturesque with lovely flower carts by the entrances. Historically, Covent Gardens were the gardens for the convent. Today, the beautiful enclosed market hosts various vendors that change regularly. The market is a great way to connect with locals. We went to the market four times during our visit. On Sundays, various art vendors set up and we visited with a local fossil dealer and purchased a couple fossils. We loved our dinner in one of the nearby cafes. On Mondays, antique dealers set up and sell various treasures. My husband bought me a vintage bracelet. We also watched a quintet play in the atrium. We found a few reasonably priced souvenirs to take home for gifts. Plenty of great restaurants surround the Market. We ate at several places and enjoyed our meals. I think I can confidently say Harrods is the best store on earth. The building alone is…read moreextraordinary, occupying its corner of Knightsbridge with the scale and permanence of a London landmark. Inside, floor after floor unfolds into fashion, jewelry, food, technology, and nearly anything else someone could conceivably want to buy. It is unapologetically excessive, but that ambition is exactly what makes it so much fun. What surprises me most is how pleasant Harrods can feel despite all that luxury. My wife and I once looked at diamonds here, fully aware we were surrounded by merchandise operating in another financial universe, and the staff could not have been nicer. They answered our questions, treated us seriously, and never made the interaction feel slimy or transactional. For a place this fancy, the warmth was striking. Another visit produced one of those purchases that becomes attached to a place. My wife bought a pair of Gucci loafers here, a significant purchase for us, and she ended up wearing them constantly. I still associate those shoes with London and the excitement of buying something special at Harrods rather than ordering it online. The Food Halls create the same sense of occasion, with spectacular rooms and counters worth exploring even when you are not hungry. Personally, my favorite territory is the Fifth Floor, especially the technology. On my last visit, the running selection nearby included the largest and newest collection of On shoes I had ever seen, as though Roger Federer and the Swiss president had stopped by between Wimbledon matches for a glow-up. They also had a state-of-the-art Sony television that I remember being around 80 inches and roughly £100,000, showing Gran Turismo on the newest PlayStation at the time. The image was so absurdly good it practically melted my face. Nearby sat a Samsung or LG machine the size of a wardrobe that steamed, refreshed, and cleaned clothing, the kind of absurdly futuristic appliance that felt straight out of James Bond. That is Harrods in miniature: the biggest, newest, and best versions of things you already know, plus things you did not know existed. For someone fascinated by retail, brands, and consumer behavior, the entire building is basically a history museum of capitalism still operating at full speed. Even the people-watching is incredible, with an unusually diverse international crowd making Knightsbridge feel like a crossroads of wealth, fashion, tourism, and London life. Historically, that idea runs much deeper than the current merchandise. Harrods has occupied Knightsbridge since the 19th century, and its famous pet department once sold exotic animals, including lions. Someday I would love to take a proper historical tour with someone who knows the building, the Harrod family, and the strange commercial history packed into these rooms. The merchandise changes, but Harrods seems to have spent generations asking the same question: what is the most remarkable thing in the world that someone might conceivably want to buy? Ultimately, what impresses me is how gracefully Harrods carries all this excess. Extreme luxury can easily become vulgar, plastic, and gluttonous, yet Harrods reflects something England does exceptionally well: celebrating tradition, design, and innovation at the same time. The grandeur is enormous without becoming tasteless, and during the holidays especially, the building can feel genuinely magical. If you are visiting London, go at least once, even if you have absolutely no intention of buying anything.
