Dirty dirty dirty ... Did I say dirty ? First and foremost, it took 30 minutes for 2 gyro salads. I wouldve understood IF we were not the only customers in the shop. Then I went to wash my hands and the bathroom was gross and old too!!! Grrrrrr. So, we sit down at the table and then I notice bits of dried food on the dispensers and table. Ok so after all this filth, I shouldnt have eaten the food but I didnt eat all day and I was starving. Once the salad arrived, I just ate the lamb/gyro meat so I will give the lamb 2 stars. So, on Friday night we order food from this restaurant for pick up. They told us 30 Minutes and we got there's about 35 minutes after we called. They had not even started our order. We watched a couple people who had been waiting leave, without their food, out of frustration. There was one table of people eating and 3 other people waiting for to-go orders, so it didn't look particularly busy. We got no apology for the fact that our food wasn't started and no approximate time it would be ready, we were simply told to sit and wait. After about 20 more minutes I got up and stood by the counter, when asked what I wanted I said that I just wanted to express that I was starting to get angry. I said it pretty casually, considering. She laughed and walked away and proceeded to speak another language with the other woman. That's when I decided to write the review. When we were finally given our food there was no apology for the wait and when I asked that we please go through and check that everything was there because I didn't want to have to come back they actually acted a bit offended and said they had checked it themselves. When i did take it to a table and check, It was all there and I packed it back up to leave, when I waved to let them know all was good I got a smug smirk from the older woman. Hope you aren't hungry when you come to this place. We waited for over an hour to get our food. If we weren't getting food for other people, I would have left. It didn't seem that busy and there was a call in order but wow. Not to mention the ladies making the food get their water use the hand washing sink as their source. I asked why it took so long and the lady said it wasn't her fault, made excuses, got an attitude and was not even apologetic. Normally I will give places a second chance but never again. I've lived in Spring Valley for about 8 years now and I've been in and out of Casa de Oro, so finally I decided to try something new in the area. The cafe isn't necessarily the cleanest, so it's a little iffy. And from the outside, you can totally see into the kitchen and quite frankly, I don't know about what regulations they are following cause I am definitely surprised they have an 'A' on their window. Anyways, the two ladies at the counter were totally rude to my friends and myself, and we had to clear our own table. I ordered just a salad and my friend ordered a gyro. My salad was fine (but their wasn't much to mess up there really.) But the meat inside of my friends gyros was so incredibly chewy and gross that he gave up eating it halfway. I wouldn't give this place any star. We went in and the Guy who seemed like a waiter just looked at us and kept talking to another Guy there. As we were sitting down, the Guy went to the back. While we were waiting for someone to come and take the order, I noticed that the place was a mess. On the table next to us, flies were hovering on top of the plates that the customer had left. I've been going to the Grecian Cafe for close to 10 years now. The ladies know me be name and always treat me right. I highly recommend the Chicken Soulvaki plate, or the Chicken Salad. The plate comes with 2 kabobs, yellow rice (yummy), small salad and pita bread. The salad is just a great big chicken greek salad with pita bread, but oh so good. I still enjoy their gyros sandwich when I'm in a rush. And their pita bread is really quite good. - The downside can be the wait if they are busy, and the price point is a little highg, but I'm a beleiver that you get what you pay for. Go there when its slow, or call ahead, but really if you like Greek food and you live in the area its a must try restaurant. read more

Got dinner here again tonight. As usual, it was fabulous! Yes, as others have said, if you're in a hurry, the Carls Jr. drive through is a stone throw from here. Better yet, phone in your order ahead of your arrival. If you want yummy and generous portion sizes, you've come to the right place. We got the gyros plate that comes with a nice sized, fresh salad complete with tomatoes, cucumber, onion, olives, plenty of feta. The plate had a generous serving of their wonderful yellow rice, warm pita, piled high with lots of gyros meat. More than I could finish in one sitting, although my teenage son was able to power through his. My other son got the gyros sandwich combo with fries, again, generous servings of the fries and the sandwich was literally stuffed with meat. As a side per some recommendations I'd seen here, I also ordered the popcorn shrimp. I could have also gotten that as a combo with fries, but didn't want to be a glutton, so I ordered them ala carte, again, a very generous portion. We all literally fought over that last piece of shrimp. In a word, they were delicious! I didn't feel that they were overly priced considering the amount of food you got for your money. I think approximately $10 per person for an entree with salad isn't excessive. The staff were VERY nice. Gave us a menu and even suggested we call ahead next time so we wouldn't have to wait. This is our go-to place for gyros and baklava... delish! Authentic food from a most-of-the-time-friendly, certainly hard-working Greek family business. We phone our order in and pick it up to take home because the inside of the store is very basic and lacks ambiance. Also, be warned that the food takes quite a while to prepare, which we learned the first time when we placed a to-go order from in the store. Keeping these things in mind, The Grecian Café is certainly recommended... we love supporting local businesses. read more

Me and my mom have been here 3 or 4 times and we love it. The food is very good and always tastes fresh! Sometimes there's a wait, but that's due to only 1 or 2 people cooking and taking orders. Better than going hungry! We will continue to come here as long as we're alive haha! read more

It has been almost 4 years since I eaten here. Stopped by for lunch. Got the basic #1 lunch combo ( 11 to 2 pm) , a gyro sandwich with salad ( or fries) and a drink. The quantity and quality of food was great for the the price I paid ( about 9$). 2 people were working there, A husband and wife I believe so picking items that needs some preparation might take longer. My food was served fairly quick but I had to share a table with another coustemer because other tables were either filled with people or old plates. Since other yelpers had mentioned issues with the portions, I went big and got a combo plate. Much to my surprise, while I was waiting, they brought me a large salad with a deliciously zingy dressing. Nice and light, but flavorful. The lettuce was crisp, all the veggies tasted fresh - I'm a huge fan. After seeing the other reviews...I'll definitely be back to try the chicken version, as with a little protein it would have made the perfect meal. Unfortunately, since I was eating alone, I still had to tackle the huge Veggie platter I had ordered as my meal. (who wants to eat cold spanakopita?) The veggie platter was good...solid. Not the best I've ever had, but I've been lucky to have some amazing Greek food in my life. It's certainly the best I've had so far in San Diego, however, and I will have to come back and try the Orzo soup and gyros at some point. The high points: --The unexpected delicious salad. --Super nice lady giving me a free tea when I ordered it at the table after paying for my meal...I had the money out on the table for it, but she waved me off! --The tangy, but crisp dolma. The last few times I've tried greek joints, the dolmas have been lacking. Since that's one of my favorite things, it's nice to be somewhere where they get it right. -Fluffy spanakopita, nice and warm and filled with a good amount of feta and large pieces of onion. I prefer a higher spinach to phyllo ratio, but the onion/quality phyllo made up for it. Most importantly, it was crisp in all the right places, not soggy like some places I've been to. The mid points: --Table I chose to sit at hadn't been reset since the last customer to use it. My bad for sitting there, but the place looked as if it'd been pretty slow. It wasn't dirty or anything, just obvious signs like a straw wrapper/only one set of silverware. All the other tables were fine however. --The falafel was good for falafel but not spectacular. I managed to eat 2, so as to not feel like I was wasting, so they were tasty enough...but I've only once found a place with falafel I like, and it was a hole in the wall in a different country. So, take my opinion on this matter with a grain of salt. -I was eating alone at an odd time while reading a book...but in the 45 minutes I sat there, I saw at least 4 groups come get to-go orders. It was weird having the room to myself, especially as no music was playing. -Hummus was ok. Kind of oddly creamy and a little bit more bland than I'm used to, but only a week ago I was at Ali Baba's (in El Cajon) eating a hummus platter for lunch so the bar is set kind of high at the moment. The low points: None that I experienced. The two gals working the counter were friendly, the place was tidy if not sparkling and everything on my plate was good to great. YUM! chicken plate is awesome. it comes with so much food and the rice is really good. I love the taste of the pita bread but I'm normally too full to eat the salad. my boyfriend says it's good though! everyone saying the woman looks like a witch are kinda spot on... but she's friendly! yet another conveniently located place that serves good food. This place has good Greek food, there's no doubt about that. The Greek salad costs about $9 and could feed 2 people, really tasty. I've also had gyros from here and they're quite good, too. The restaurant is small and a little bit dated decor but it's not a big put off. I just peeked in the kitchen and it looked pretty clean & organized. The staff seems average to slightly below average on the friendliness scale, in fact the lady who brought my food actually pushed my arm out of the way with my plate - no excuse me, or sorry etc. Anyways the main thing is I got a tasty meal and would recommend this place over all the other crap nearby. I have been to this place 3 times. First time was good so I was looking forward to going back. The second time I ordered to take home. I should have checked but the did not give me what I ordered so I drove back and they made me what I originally ordered. Last night I ordered again at the counter to take home. There were a few customers but not that busy. While sitting there another customer that ordered takeout came back because they forgot to add the cookies they paid for in the bag. After 30 minutes I walked up to the cash register to remind them if my order. At this time she puts the fries in the fryer. After 10 minutes she hands me my order and it's not what I ordered. Order the 21 Fish and shrimp for myself and my daughter it literally came with 12 shrimp and they were all fried to a crisp literally as well as the fries . I had to try and pick through the shrimp to find one that was edible , usually don't have a problem with this place but this was just totally disappointing. read more

My sister & I ate here last week. We loved the greek chicken salads we ordered. The lettuce was fresh and crisp as were the veggies on top. The woman who took our order was sweet and even brought us extra bread while we waited for our food. No complaints at all. The only mistake we made was ordering too much... the salads were huge! I lived 2 miles from the Grecian Cafe for years we would have the chicken salad at least once a week. After I moved away we would drive 7 miles just for that fabulous chicken salad, it's my favorite!!!! Although I've never had a dish I didn't like we keep going back for that salad. All the dishes are flavorful seasoned to perfection. The pita bread is warmed and the tzatziki sauce is house made and delicious as well as the RICE oh don't forget to order the rice!!! This was the first time I was extremely disappointed with the food...I ordered 1/2 2 orders of gyros and rice and extra pita. The chicken was warm to cold...the Gyros tasted stale and old...pita bread day old tasting...when I asked for extra yogurt sauce the lady begrudgingly gave me one more....both ladies working behind the counter seemed to not care and were amazingly slow. To top it off, my son found a bug crawling out of his piece of chicken. To be fair, we've had great food here in the past....but not this time...it was awful read more
