Went there to get yarn for a big project expecting to spent about $500 for yarn. When I walked in I got dirty looks from the clutch of women sitting around knitting and talking. No one said a word to me and they went immediately back to their conversation. I waited at the door for a bit for anyone to offer to help me find my yarn or explain the layout of the shop. No one did. So I walked past the women to the back of the shop to prowl the shelves, digging in my tote for my notes. That's when I heard one woman say to another that they should keep an eye on me since I could put anything in my bag. What a horrible group of women! Yes, they had lovely yarn. However I wouldn't spend a penny in that shop. Its run by a bunch of nasty, lazy, bigoted bitches who won't help but will made snide comments. Shop anywhere else. read more

This is by far one of the nicest yarn shops I have been to in years. The staff and owner are so helpful and nice. I am what I would call a confident beginner with knitting. So I typically have to ask some questions when shopping. Here everyone was so nice when I was asking questions about different yarns and techniques. Which means a lot since that's not always the case. It's a drive from my house but this shop is likely to become my go to local yarn shop. Yep, yet another yarn shop stop at the tail end of a out of town work adventure. This is a well stocked yarn shop, with friendly staff. After the typical pleasantries where exchanged (you know the ones I'm talking about, how are you, are you looking for something specific) and my explanation that I have a compulsion to visit yarn shops when I'm on the road I was left to browse. I didn't recognize a lot that I would have considered "local" finds, but it's entirely possible I just missed it. I did find a lovely skein of sock yarn to add to my stash of goodies. My only concern here is the store seems to be laid out by weight but gets a little weird in a few spots, I'm sure I could have asked a few questions of the staff, but when I'm in travel yarn mode, I try not the pester the staff. read more

The store is amazing, and I'd happily give it 5 stars just for the sheer quantity of delicious looking yarn. Ah, but a business is not run by inanimate objects- it's run by people. Sit down for a bit, and let me tell you about the staff. The staff is made up of annoying 'kept women' who are not very friendly. I expected to see cool women with dreds and bracelets and big smiles, but NOPE- I'm back at Cameron Village again- le sigh. They're helpful, but when they help you they have their noses in the air. Now let the dark cloud subside, my friends- you need to gaze at the brilliant blue, purple, black, shiny, variegated, wooly, sparkly, lush yarns. The yarn will set you back a bit, but it's worth it. The pattern selection is average and inadequate, but I suggest finding free patterns online in the first place. There is also a collection of tasty buttons. Okay, they are not edible- but they should be. I could stare at the yarn for hours, but I'm certain that I would be chased out. I'm a knitting noob, but I still love yarn. Every time I want to return to this store I remember the gaze of the women who work there. I just look in the window instead, I don't want to be glared at for no reason. Please hire some of the swell young folk from Whole Foods instead and business will pick up, fire every snooty person at this place (I apologize for the staff that is awesome, one older lady happily helped me with my project). read more

I came in with my own pattern and some yarn my parents had purchased from Great Yarns as a Christmas present. I asked for assistance in getting the right size needles, but inadvertenty bought 24" instead of 32" circulars. I didn't notice my mistake until a week after the purchase. When I returned to the store to inquire about exchanging the needles, which were identical in price, I was coldly informed that they do not do returns or exchanges. The employee pointed to a piece of paper taped to the desk with an arcane description of their returns and exchanges policy. So, I'm stuck with needles I don't need, and will have to shell out another 10 dollars for new needles. I understand that it's store policy, but it's a crap policy. I've shopped at other yarn stores that have no problem exchanging something like needles for a different length or size. I'm very disappointed in this store. It's local, it has a great selection, and since they're not a big evil chain, I had hoped they would have better exchange policies for their customers. I will be doing my shopping elsewhere in the future. read more

The staff here is aloof and non-helpful unless it is clear that you are going to be making a sizable purchase. They ignore customers even when you try to get their attention. Their prices are higher than suggested retail. Even their "bargain yarns" cost more than you could purchase elsewhere. That said, I do try to support them because I hate to see a local yarn store go out of business. I far prefer Yarn Tree Studio because they are inviting and go out of their way to help you and greet you the minute you walk in. read more

I LOVE THIS SHOP! The new owner, Pam is absolutely wonderful. She knows her yarn, any pattern you mention, helps you anytime with knitting challenges and she and the staff make it such a wonderful place to just sit and knot. Yarn selection and prices I found to be good and she has yarn for all budgets. I don't like going into a yarn shop where all the yarn is high priced and doesn't meet needs of all people, especially new knitters. Always enjoy going and seeing the many samples they have. I was surprised to read the bad reviews here, too. I've been here twice just to browse, and the second time, with a couple of my favorite loud Cuban guys. They've never given me a problem. I fully intend to come in and buy some yarn here as soon as I can. They still don't compare to my favorite local yarn store ever - the shelving is too high for me to reach in places and they don't always have a ball winder out for people to use - but at least I've never seen the bad service people have talked about. read more

Pam, the store owner, is one of the nicest persons you'll meet and she'll address you by name as you walk in the door. After reading all of the other reviews, I was a bit trepidatious about visiting this shop, but the promise of great yarn will overcome all. There was only one lady working who was very sweet and we had a lovely conversation. But the yarn selection was kind of disappointing. Their stock was very low and most of it seemed to be wool/acrylic blends. I'm more into hand dyed wools and indie dyers. All in all it was a pleasant experience and I did find a couple of balls of bubblegum pink cotton and some hand dyed yarn from Crazy Dog (the only hand dyed yarn in the shop) :) read more

I have been here several times and each time I have received very rude service. While the younger employees tend to be friendlier, the older women are very rude and seem put out when you ask them to wind your hanks into a ball. I used to do quite a bit of knitting and was really impressed with the selection at this store. I was looking for a specific yarn they didn't have, but they offered to look it up on the computer and found something in the shop that was comparable and I bought that instead. As far as the price range... that's how import yarn stores are. If you want Lion Brand and Loops & Threads prices, go to Michael's. If you want a much wider selection of colors and higher quality fibers, Great Yarns is your spot. I got 3 skeins and my total was $17 -- which proves they're not ALL expensive! Also, they have a punch card system for every $10 you spend and when you fill up your card you get $25 off. I will go ANYWHERE that does a punch card system. All in all, I liked it a lot. I actually kept saying how much I wished I could work there while my boyfriend and I were perusing the shelves -- when we got in the car he had to remind me I was only 23 and not allowed to go down that career path just yet. read more

I was so surprised to read the bad reviews here. I stopped in on Friday looking for some yarn and the 2 ladies in the store couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. They helped me pick my colors, offered to wind the yarn for me, separated the 2 sets into different bags so I wouldn't get them confused. The store also has a great selection of beautiful yarns. I came to the shop on a Saturday to get help with project from yarn purchased there. Part-time employee did her best o help, but got tied down with a return & new computer system. I said no problem - I would be back on Monday. I returned Monday & was helped by owner who was also teaching others at the table. We were patient as she juggled influx of customers and made best of our down time by enjoying each other's company and chatting. After a couple of hours I felt I had learned enough to continue on my own, so thanked the owner and left. I worked on the sweater at home but something didn't seem right, so I returned on Tuesday. Owner looked at my work (the mistake was obvious to her) and said in front of other customers and an employee that if I had been paying attention the day before instead of laughing, I probably wouldn't have had this problem. read more

I have been a customer at Great Yarns since 1986. it is my kind of shop. One enters, is greeted, and then is allowed to browse until there is a question. If I have had a question about substituting yarns, they are answered knowledgeably. If I have needed a pattern for yarn I already own they guide me yo patterns appropriate to the age, gender, and type of project I need. They do not interrupt their help with me to help someone else, and vice versa. They don't gossip and to my knowledge treat everyone kindly and equally. I have made multiple visits to Great Yarns over the years, and since some years pass between my projects, I usually need help and guidance on pattern and yarn selection. Invariably, I have found the staff at Great Yarns to be incredibly helpful, going the extra mile to help me find a pattern to my liking and helping me evaluate and choose a yarn for my purpose. I have also observed them to be extremely helpful with other customers and with in-store knitters needing help. While I realize their policy does not allow refunds, I asked that an exception be made in the case of some yarn my best friend had purchased. Less than 2 weeks after the purchase, my friend died suddenly. Obviously, store credit is of no use to her. I asked them to refund her money to her family and was refused, even after the clerk checked with the owner. My friend had spent lots of money with them over the years and I was so very disappointed by their intransigence. read more

Of the three yarn stores in the Raleigh area (four if you count Chapel Hill), this is my favorite one to go to. They have a great selection of yarns and a variety of single patterns and books. They also have a good sized area with machine washable yarns that are nice- I don't do a lot of baby projects but when I do I go straight to the machine washable stuff and they have much better quality yarns than the craft stores. However, I have never been too impressed with the customer service. They will offer to help you only after you have been wandering in the store for a good 20 minutes or so. Don't expect a hello right when you walk in the door although it does occasionally happen. The last time I was in I was very disappointed with the staff as they proceeded to talk and make fun of a customer who had just left. And they were not exactly shy about it either as I could hear their conversation at the back of the store (well, it is fairly small). I thought that was tacky and very unprofessional. Having said that though, I would normally stay away from a store for a while after something like that but they do have a better selection than the other two in the area so I will let it slide this one time. If it happens again I won't be going back. read more
