I opened the container (I ordered general tso chicken), believing the food would fulfill the hunger. The chicken was soggy (no other way to describe it). It tasted so bad. My grandfather ordered the chicken and vegetables. Also, soggy. I did a pick up order and live 5 minutes away, so I expected it to be a reasonable amount of time from restaurant to my stomach. Obviously that wouldnt have mattered, as it was poorly prepared and worsely seasoned. I don't recommend this place to anyone.

When I am in Ajax, I often take Westney Road North to get to places. There is a Shoppers Drug Mart…read morethat I like frequenting along this route. On Saturday, I popped in there to get a few items. I was hungry. I have been eyeing Hakka Pavilion for a while. It's across from Shoppers. I decided to take the plunge and have a later lunch on a Saturday afternoon. I walked in. There were a number of customers chowing down. I didn't see anyone at the counter. I simply found a free booth and started plopping my stuff down. About thirty seconds later, a woman popped out of the kitchen. I signalled that I was the only one dining. She came over, and brought me a menu and cutlery. My usual dish that I order at a Hakka restaurant is spicy garlic chicken. If I end up not liking it, I'll come back and give the chilli chicken a try. So, I went with the former. It was on the list of daily specials. It's $6.25. You simply choose what type of protein (there's also eggplant) you want and what starch. I went with steamed rice, which is the default. You can also get fried rice or noodles for an additional charge. I also got a can of Diet Coke. It was $1.25. I got my meal super fast. It was impressive. At first, it looks like a small portion. However, when you get down to eating it, looks are deceiving. It's generous. I love spicy garlic chicken when it's got heat and flavour. I love lots of garlic that will ward off vampires and some people that I don't like. I also like chicken that is both a bit crispy and juicy. This restaurant does spicy garlic chicken well. I ate everything up. It was delicious. Service is efficient -- perhaps too efficient. I had finished and the woman came over to clear my plate away. She then came back with my bill, a fortune cookie, and the payment machine. She wanted me to pay immediately. The good news is that I didn't have to walk up to the counter. However, a slight pause between getting my bill to actually look at how much I owed before whipping out my payment card would have been nice! The price is decent for the food that you get. I paid. She asked whether I wanted my fortune cookie. Yes, please! See, I didn't even have time to crack it open before paying. The booth was comfortable. I was watching CP24 on the TV as I ate. The women's washroom is compact and clean. I'd come back. Lots of folks were doing takeout. I may need to give that a shot when I am in the area. (9)

Their Veg Manchurian gravy is a must-try, packed with rich garlic flavors. High recommend trying Veg Chowmein as the one we had was super spicy. Though Hot & Sour was highly recommended by others we found it too tangy and super strong in flavours. The service here is super quick and ambience is okish. It's more like dinner vibes in terms of ambience. Pro tip: they offer a 10% cash discount on takeout!

I'd say out of all the Chinese options in Durham, this one is one of the better ones.

I highly recommend the Thai fish cakes as the appetizer. They are super tasty and the dipping sauce is amazing. I also highly recommend their massaman beef curry. The curry itself is super addicting with slightly spicy and deep and rich flavors. Trust me and order an extra bowl of rich to slurp up all that goodness. Their pad ka prao with ground pork is another dish that's a winner to me and I always get this everytime I go. With strong basil flavors and the fried egg seals the deal. And of course you cannot leave without finishing off your meal with coconut sticky rice infused with butterfly pea extract and the Thai milk tea. The mangoes are super sweet and paired with the fresh sticky rice and coconut milk that has a slight salty taste that actually accentuates the sweetness of the coconut milk. Everyone is super friendly however they can get quite busy on weekends and holidays so best to order ahead.

Noodles were not crispy and super oily/ soggy - granted I ordered take out. It tasted like the soggy won ton chips in a noodle dish :S - Khao Soi- this had to be the most authentic tasting dish . I'm not a fan of curry and thought this tasted not bad. Portion again was smaller than other places we've been to - KHAO PAD KA PRAO- this tasted like Chinese fried rice with super dry as sand beef. Taste wise was not bad but not authentic Thai and not what I expected. Again not worth it for the price point $19

I tell everyone about it and they all agree how good it is once they have it! Each food has it's own taste! It's not too salty! The rice is moist and tastes like rice, and you can taste the chicken or beef etc rather than it all tasting the same. The chicken balls seem small but that is becasue they are not totally caked in breading and the breading that is on them is crispy delicious and not greasy at all. You get pretty much an equal portion of breading to chicken so you are not so full of breading and you're able to enjoy more of their other great dishes. Their food is not greasy at all. The garlic shrimp is delicious (I am a spice wuss and it has a bit of a bite to it, but I still eat it because it is so good). I've ventured into different dishes with this food because all of their food is so good! They are fast and hot with takeout! I recommend Yang Chow without hesitation, and thank them for giving me variety and a healthier alternative to other takeout or fast food!!!
