Listen, I hate taxes more than anything, and I go through this every year. It's a long story, but…read morethe guy who did my taxes for years since moving back isn't doing them this year so my mom and I had to find a new person to do it. The gentleman (Alan) who does the taxes here bases his prices off how complicated they are. He has an MBA from Harvard and is super cool to deal with, along with being reasonably competitive with his pricing compared to other accountants. My mom and I went together and he took us at 7PM on a Friday night. He had mine done (the easier of the two) in 15 minutes and my moms (who's more complicated) in about 30 minutes. We both sat with him separately to go through each item and things went smoothly. We both paid by check, as I don't believe he takes any other form of payment. You can ask, but that's what it is. Overall, he filed it electronically and he said I should get my refund in about two weeks. For me, I spent about $225 for everything, and my mom's was $390. Most places we called were a flat fee of $400 to $450, so this pricing is fabulous compared to what's out there. Alan's located in downtown Berkley and I do recommend him!

My family has been using Alltax for over 30 years. Here's why:…read more Alltax has been a tax service since my grandfather moved to the east side after he got back from the war. Now, just because my grandfather used them isn't reason enough for me, but once I started working in high school, I realized why granddad used them. First, the service is excellent. Many of the agents have been there for decades, so there's a sort of personal connection there that I just wouldn't get with an HR Block-type firm. And given that they're a Michigan institution, their first priority seems to be service, not jacking up prices so high that they put a large dent in your returns. The agent determines how much your return costs; after developing relationships with our agents over the years, the cost of our returns has gone down, not up! I guess it's this kind of ethic that keeps me coming back; they THANK me for coming back each year, not only verbally, but financially as well. That's reason enough for me! Oh, and free coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and cookies doesn't hurt either.
