2 piece whitefish dinner. A MUST when in any up north lake town in Michigan.

I always have to get whitefish and chips whenever I'm in an up north lake town in Michigan - and I suggest you do too! Great Lakes Whitefish & Chips was a good option for this visit to Charlevoix. My boyfriend and I split the 2 piece platter (comes with coleslaw and fries). Our server was really nice and asked if we wanted an extra coleslaw. The fish was perfectly fried and not too heavily breaded. The fries were average, nothing too special. Pricing is average for this type of meal in a town like Charlevoix. It wasn't my favorite ever whitefish (that would be Scalawag's in Petoskey and Blue Water Grill in Grand Rapids) but it did the trick!

Omg THIS place is a MUST stop if you're traveling Michigan! Everything is made fresh from the batter to the sliced & fried zucchini, the French fries (chips) and the fish itself! The batter was the perfect layer without being too thick but still had the crispy crunch which went perfect with that homemade and surprisingly almost sweet (from the mixture of the pickled flavor added) tartar sauce! The whitefish was very moderately priced (you'll find many places rack up the fee) for the meal on 2 and 3 pieces over getting the cod fish and chips - but that was great too for the kids meals! Our 5 year old actually finished his and went for our fish when we usually have trouble keeping him from the fries and getting him to eat the fish. The staff was friendly and even though the whole state (and country) is experiencing staffing issues but they sat us quickly, the server was happy and a fun Nana and the food came fast! You'll probably want to order a beverage while you visit to enjoy while your food cools because it came straight out and was fresh off the fryer, so let the food cool a minute. Thank y'all at Great Lakes whitefish and chips for an amazing meal!

Looked forward to eating fish and chips a few feet away from the water. However, I extremely disappointed: the fish had no flavor, fishy odor, heavily breaded and not cooked well (thick pieces). The tartar sauce was also disappointing-just tasted of mayo. It was not even edible and had to throw it away. Overall, not worth the price for the poor quality. Would not recommend that restaurant for their battered fish.

So the first thing on our list of needs, was buying a can of Off! Being that the cottage is in a fairly rural area, there aren't very many stores. But on our drive in, I noticed King's Fish Market. It was close, so I drove up. Turns out they don't sell bug spray, only smoked fish and a million other things, including Venison sausage. I purchased some smoked white fish and some venison cheddar sausage. OMG-Fantastic! They also have a little cafe and you can order fish and chips, chicken fingers etc as well. Big local beer selection too. After walking around checking everything out, I walked past a couple of women having lunch. I figured I'd ask how the food was. They then told me it was delicious, and that they have lunch there several times a week. Needless to say, my lovely wife and I will be back! And then before cashing out and leaving, the friendly owner sent me down the road to a gas station that sells Off! Bonus!

While we found this to be a charming local fish and specialty market, we were unfortunately underwhelmed by the food. Most of us ordered the 2-piece whitefish basket with fries. The fish itself seemed fresh, but the batter lacked seasoning and could have been much crispier. The fries were also fairly soggy. We also tried the whitefish chowder, which desperately needed salt. Adding a bit ourselves made a huge difference in flavor. We arrived well before the lunch rush and practically had the place to ourselves, so perhaps this was just an off day. Still, the fish baskets felt severely under-fried and lacking overall flavor, which was disappointing given the local reputation and specialty focus.

Love this place!…read more This has been one of my favorite spots up north for a long time, but they've actually improved on a good thing -- and the longer wait times of enthusiastic patrons are proof. Even though we had to wait an hour, getting here relatively early for dinner, they've made waiting pretty enjoyable. With many small tables and chairs tables overlooking the water, to both an inside and outside bar area, to an area with outdoor games for kids and adults, there's things to occupy the time. The views of lake charlevoix from the large outdoor seating area of the restaurant are terrific. The menu offers a few faves that are hard to find -- such as lobster rolls and the service is great too. We each got a summer salad and added lobster. The portions of lobster were large enough to justify the almost $40 each salad cost with added. We also got fries to share. And we had drinks while waiting for the table. So it wasn't a cheap night, but it was tasty, enjoyable and memorable.

So we went down to the pub and luckily we were able to get a table right away. I should note, we also chose this pub because it had Gluten Free options and we had someone with us who could only eat Gluten Free. We were provided water fairly quickly, but to order took a little bit, about 20 minutes. I would say there were only two waitstaff working on a busy afternoon. The pub is kind of small, with seating at the bar, along the sides and then two high top tables in the middle. Once we ordered our food didn't take too long to get. I ordered a Reuben, and got the vinegar coleslaw. Rueben was good, I wouldn't say great for being an Irish Pub. The coleslaw was actually cream based so based on the menu saying vinegar I was a bit surprised. Two others ordered hamburgers which they said were just ok. All in all, the dining experience was alright, nothing spectacular but because we got seated quickly and were hungry it was good for us.
