For that reason, I feel it is important to share my experience and the concerns I have about the referral process. I am writing to formally express my dissatisfaction with the referral process and my experience during my recent periodontal consultation. During my exam and cleaning, I discussed my concern regarding an open embrasure (black triangle) with my dentist. Based on that conversation, I was referred to a periodontist to discuss a gum graft as a possible solution. I scheduled the appointment and took time out of my day because I trusted that this referral was appropriate for my condition. At the consultation, the periodontist briefly examined the area, asked what my primary concern was, and after I explained that it was the embrasure, immediately stated that a gum graft would not correct an embrasure. He then said the general dentist would need to discuss restorative options such as a veneer or crown instead. After the appointment, I was told I owed a consultation fee. I questioned why I was being charged for a consultation regarding a treatment that the specialist immediately determined would not address my concern. I was then told the consultation was also intended to determine whether I was a candidate for a veneer or crown. That explanation does not align with the reason I was given for the referral. I was referred specifically to discuss a gum graft-not to obtain clearance for a veneer or crown. My concern is not that specialists charge consultation fees. My concern is that I was referred for a treatment that the specialist determined almost immediately was not an appropriate option for the condition I was referred to discuss. This resulted in an unnecessary appointment, wasted time, and an attempt to charge me for a consultation that, in my opinion, should never have been necessary if the appropriate evaluation had been completed before the referral. For that reason, I declined to pay the consultation fee. I don't believe that I should be financially responsible for a referral that appears to have been inappropriate from the outset. I am requesting a clear explanation as to why I was referred for a gum graft consultation when the specialist determined almost immediately that a gum graft would not resolve my primary concern. Over the weekend, the pain became severe and radiated into my neck and ear. I called the office and left a voicemail, but no one returned my call, even though the office was open on Monday. Instead of helping me, the staff -- including the office manager -- treated me as if I was mistaken and made me feel dismissed and unimportant. The office manager was rude, unresponsive, and refused to listen. She quickly blamed the previous office manager, who was fired for fraud, rather than taking responsibility or addressing my concerns. My teeth have been breaking for about the past 18 years, so unfortunately I've had dental work done at almost every dentist in Burleson and Crowley: Burleson Modern Dentistry, Burleson Smiles, Renfro Family Dental, Monarch Dental, Good Faith Dentistry (which was my favorite for a couple of years), Family Smiles of Burleson, Alsbury Dental, and two in Crowley that are no longer around whose names I can't remember. Out of all of them, none have come close to matching Affordable Dentist on price. That said, Burleson Smiles, Good Faith, and Affordable Dentist all had the best staff--but Affordable still comes out on top overall. This time I was treated by Dr. Maia with assistant Laura, and both were outstanding. Cassidy at the front desk also deserves special recognition. She clearly handles much more than typical receptionist duties and consistently goes above and beyond for patients. There are only two drawbacks worth mentioning: Phone service. No matter what number I call, I never seem to reach the Crowley office directly. It usually routes to an answering service that sends my call to the wrong location. The building. The facility itself isn't in the best shape. The dental equipment appears modern and well-maintained--possibly even state-of-the-art--but the building's appearance might give some people pause. Personally, it's not something I worry about. When you take cost, staff, and equipment into account--and did I mention cost?--Affordable Dentist is my clear choice. I also sent a formal written request to Aspen Dental, but I have not yet received a response. My goal has never been to avoid paying for services I actually received. I am simply asking for a fair review of the charges for services that I believe were never provided and for the documentation supporting Aspen Dental's position.
