What's that? Not beef! Not sure.
Amanda W.

Ordered through GrubHub. Did not get notice that it was done, just that it had started. Got home, 20 minutes away and found no crab rangoons. Ordered Seven Stars around the Moon which was far from being over the moon. The "beef" did not taste or look like beef. For $14.99 it didn't come with anything but rice. No egg roll. Hot and sour soup had big great chunks of tofu. Noodles had nice Smokey flavor. I will not go back.

This place is excellent. I don't care what anyone says, the flavors are on point- way better tasting than House of China and certainly Fuji. I always get the House Lo Mein special and some egg rolls and fried dumplings. Have also had the sweet and sour chicken before and it was great. Everything tastes fresh, egg rolls are always crispy, can't beat it for Chinese for me in Dubuque. Get some take out if you're craving Chinese, you won't be disappointed.

Variety of cooked sushi!

Horrible food, tasteless or too sweet. We spent over $40 on a bunch of the worst expensive Chinese food I can remember having.

House of China is a great place to enjoy Americanized style Chinese cuisine & my favorite Chinese…read morerestaurant in Dubuque! I am honestly surprised by some negative reviews because I have never had any bad food or negative experiences here ever! House of China for me represents comforting nostalgia! I grew up in Dubuque during the 90s, moved away, & recently came back to try House of China happy it is still around. The beautiful exquisite Chinese art decor, low light ambiance, & their food is exactly like it was back in the day which I love! I try crab rangoons appetizers from many different Chinese restaurants & House of China has some of the best hot freshly fried crab rangoons I have ever had as well as some amazing eggrolls!!!! I love that they serve traditional complimentary hot tea in beautiful tea cups with dinner! My husband absolutely loves their combination fried rice with beef, chicken, & shrimp. They put alot of delicious fried eggs in their fried rice but my husband and I think it makes it taste really delicious but if you are not big on eggs you may have to request less eggs. Definitely try their beef and broccoli with rice which is really great classic menu item that I often get. House of China has decent prices with lots of amazing different diverse menu options such as the egg drop soup, hot sizzling chicken, egg fou young, fried rice, etc. We have also had really great service and our waiter was really on top of making sure our water glasses were full even before it got all the way empty lol! Overall, House of China is a wonderful classic Chinese staple cuisine in Dubuque, IA!

When I moved to Wisconsin, we eventually realized there was one in Milwaukee that was related, and we made it there a couple of times, but they closed sometime after 2020, so I had missed my Yen Ching. I found myself in Dubuque with my husband looking for a different lunch option, and when I saw Yen Ching we were set on where we were headed! We parked at the curb and I could tell this location had been here for a wile as well, since the early 1980s. There was a vintage sign outside that I wish I had thought to take a picture of. The restaurant features Hunan and Mongolian dishes. Inside, the decor was very similar to what I remembered from Illinois: the hanging lamps, the decorated beams, a carved wood piece of wall art, the wood checkout counter with the glass window on the front where back in the day maybe gum and mints would have beckoned to me as a kid. We were seated right away in a booth and soon a pot of tea and cups of ice water were dropped off. The table was set with the familiar zodiac placemat, the tea cup and the soup spoon at each spot. The Mr. poured some tea and once he saw how dark it was he pushed it away. I took it, and he said "You're going to drink that motor oil?" It did look super dark, but it tasted like the familiar oolong tea. We both went with my long-time favorites: Mongolian beef, sizzling rice soup and crab rangoon. Everything was so good and familiar, but with maybe tiny adjustments. The beef with cellophane noodles had perhaps a bit more black or white pepper seasoning and white onions in addition to the green onions, the sizzling rice soup had the addition of peas and celery, and the crab rangoon (savory not sweet) was probably spot on from what I remember. The Mongolian beef was not skimpy on the beef at all. I could have put some aside to take home as the portions were more than I needed, but I was glad to be enjoying Yen Ching menu items again, so I didn't leave anything behind except for some fried rice and soup broth. Our service was good, the atmosphere was good and prices were reasonable at $25 before tip for two lunches with a soup upgrade. I'm glad that I had the opportunity to revisit an old family favorite in a different location!

The food quality and quantity won't disappoint you as each entree is distinct from another. Some Chinese dishes taste alike as the preparation and sauces don't vary much. Not the case here, all are unique and delicious. Oh , don't forget, I'm talking carry-out ! The food is even better dining in as the ambience is cozy/friendly.

The food is excellent, especially the miso ramen, which is a comforting mix of miso soup and ramen topped with two gigantic pork chashu cutlets. It's the kind of meal that reminds you of some of the best cuisine around. We also loved the pad Thai and can't wait to try the Thai basil dish and more on our next visit. The Thai iced tea was another standout - perfectly balanced, and not overly sweet like the usual versions with condensed milk. It tasted very authentic. This place is a great new find, and we'll definitely be back.

These items are my recommendation to anyone from out of town who needs a reminder that staples like these can have the smallest tweeks and make the biggest changes. I was a little sad by the pho. I was not on the same level as the Apps. The restaurant has a very nice layout but I was disappointed to see so many other families with young babies and this location did not have a changing table in the restroom. I would request a changing table if the owner sees this. As for the wait staff, our waiter was nice and prompt with our meals, but he seemed a little over whelmed and not very personable. I think my family (of 3) just caught him on a bad day.
