If you wish to journey from Sydney to Melbourne overland, one way of doing it is by coach, which is what I did. I have never forgotten it, although some details are blurred. It require crossing the 'Great Divide' - desert.
It takes around twelvish hours or so to travel by road from Sydney to Melbourne. Twelve long hours during which time you can end up wishing to die. A few things seem worse than death, I had some of those experiences, and this is the least dreadful.
Most of us know that a blisteringly hot desert is dangerous to be in, but how many remember that the same desert can drop well below freezing at night? No one told me about the desert, so I didn't think about the night!
I hopped on the coach in Sydney, which was pretty full. After a while the bloke next to me fell asleep on my shoulder, and after a short quandary, I used his head as a pillow.
After a while the bus got emptier, and my pillow left the coach. Some other bloke sat beside me, and sizing him up, I moved to an empty seat, as the prospect of his slumbering was less, er, acceptable.
Lovely scenery. Oh wow, more of Oz, hey this is great. But the light began to fade, so I tried to doze again. Something woke me up! I did! I was cold and I'd put my sleeping bag in the 'hold'. Drat. Huddle up, knees under chin. After a while I began to shake, ooer. I noticed the older man on the other side of the aisle looking pale and, well, cold. My brain began a debate; German part said, sit next to him, keep each other warm. English culture said;can't do that, I don't know him on and on this argument went and achieved nothing.
Hey, if ever you're in the desert at night, don't worry about how much you know someone or not! Share your warmth, for Pete's sake!
So, I arrived, stiff with cold, in Melbourne. I've worried about that man ever since. read more
