Great service! I needed touch up paint for my new cabinets and I needed the color to be matched well. I first went to another grays paint but the match came out to dark. So I decided to try the Belmont location. They were very friendly. Helped me right away even though it was very busy in the morning. They took the other paint just in case and called me later in the day when the paint was matched. When I picked it up they not only mixed the color match perfectly but they gave me the nee quart for free. I was going to pay for it but the manager wanted to make it right even if it wasn't his store. I appreciate when a store goes out of their way to make it right. The paint was perfect and I've already used it to touch up the cabinets. Would definitely go back to this location in the future. read more

Gray's Paint is a a great place to go if you need a paint match. After some repair work was done needed to repaint a wall in our dining room. Could not find the name of the paint we had used. Went back and forth several times to Gray's looking at different paint samples before finally asking the clerk! duh! can they help? Of course said the clerk, bring in a chip about the size of a nickel give us a couple of hours and we will have your paint and we did! and they did! The paint is an exact match! My husband and I are so happy with the result! you would never know the entire one wall was repainted! Oh, when was painted, at least 15 years ago! so when great paint is used it will last a very long time! So yes, a bit pricey, but when you still love the color after so many years, yes a great value. read more

Look, if you're trying to match paint, have the code for a perfect match! Don't complain in YELP that the paint doesn't match. A Swatch or Sample is good but again not perfect...EXPECT IT!!! The reps at Greys are awesome! COVID compliant and friendly. Call on my guy Craig! He'll take the time to LISTEN on what you're trying to do. We had a closet to paint and his recommendation was perfect! We had a larger project and again asked for recommendations...dude is batting 100%!!! Again, these guys are experts. I painted walls for the first time yesterday. Mr. L and I are trying to make our home look nicer, and this time instead of guessing, we are working with a designer. She recommended we buy Benjamin Moore Aura paint from Gray's. So we did. The helpful sales guys gave me great advice. If you have a lot of paint, they will carry it out to your car for you. I wish I'd asked more questions when I initially bought the paint on Saturday, but as a novice painter, I didn't even know what to ask. Yesterday we ran out of one type of paint and were disappointed to discover that Gray's is closed on Sunday, making it impossible for us to finish our job that day. Gray's will likely be our go-to paint store from now on. Weekend warriors like us just need to remember to plan ahead so that we don't need anything on Sunday and experience "paintus interruptus," a very frustrating malady. read more

This is an update to my earlier below. Went to both Kelly Moore and Home Depot and had them color match the paint and bought paint that was MUCH closer to what I bought at Gray's (surprising to me Home Depot was closer). And I bought a quart first to make sure the color matches--which I will now do every time. I just wish it hadn't cost me $100 to learn this. And this is why I did not go back to Gray's to have them color match the paint. read more

He was professional and patient and worked with me to get the perfect colors to enhance our kitchen. We discussed eggshell vs. satin vs. semi-gloss and his recommendation for walls, trim & cabinets. The store is clean, airy & bright. They also have an amazing selection of wallpapers including the ones from the "Property Brothers" show featuring Drew & Jonathan Scott. I was trying to get a paint match order and I needed it same day. Brought in a sample of the paint I needed. Initially they said it wouldn't be ready till Mon (it was a Sat) and I asked if they could get it sooner and the manager said "midday". Ok, not ideal but went ahead and ordered. I called 2 hours later and asked if it was ready and they said no. I asked if there was anything i could do to expedite. Again - "no". Not even an explanation. Just a terse "no"! At this point i called Sherwin Williams and they told me it would take them half an hour. They said they would call when it was ready. 1pm comes and I tell my painter they haven't called yet. He says, "I bet you it's ready - probably has been for some time. They always pull crap like that!" Sure enough, I call and wouldn't you know it - it's ready! Then the person says "we tried calling and your VM was full". It was my cell phone. Apparently these guys either don't know how phones work or they don't care that they could be caught in a lie. I looked at my "recent calls" - nothing. I had my wife call and she got my VM and left one. I confirmed the number they used when i picked up the paint. I've bought a fair amount of paint from Gray's in the past though not recently. Won't be buying any more paint from them again. And I hope this review dissuades anyone else from doing so as well. Ok it takes longer and I was asking for same day - but don't just outright lie. That's not the kind of business anyone should work with. Go to Sherwin Williams - I bought some paint from them recently because of a certain color they had. Much better customer service! read more

My wife went in for two gallons of mixed paint. One of the cans was left only partially sealed. It leaked in the box the clerk packed it in, and when removed from the box, the can opened up and spilled more paint out. Paint leaked and spilled on the driveway, porch, hardwood floors, a table, and two chairs-- and all over my wife's hands and arms. I called the manager of the store to report what happened, and his response and tone conveyed that he couldn't have cared less. He made no apology whatsoever for the mistake, and simply grumbled something about send him a bill for professional cleanup. Call in a cleaning professional? The paint needed to be cleaned up immediately before it dried! We cleaned it up ourselves, which took over two hours. You would think that securing the tops of paint cans before they leave the store would be a priority in a paint shop, or if a mistake like this happened, that the manager would go out of his way to apologize and offer-- at a minimum-- to replace the can of spilled paint. Not at this shop. We will never set foot in Gray's Paint store again. read more

As an interior designer, I purchase A LOT of paint samples therefore spend A LOT of time waiting for formulas to get mixed. I've begun calling in paint orders, have an account and always offer to pay up front to save time. When I called today the guy who I spoke with was condescending and rude about accommodating me. When I showed up to pick up the paint he was passive aggressive. I told him we all have choices and I come here because it's closest to my home. I told him I thought he was rude on the phone and rude in person and that I would not be returning to this branch. This all happened with the manager standing within earshot and not saying a word. This saddens be because I don't like having these types of encounters with people. Not nice to industry professionals and just plain bad customer service. Go to the Burlingame branch- they are always DELIGHTFUL. read more

I wouldn't do a project without a consult first from the guys at Gray's San Mateo. End of story. I see some of the customer service complaints here and I want to lend a different point of view. They are excruciatingly professional but they aren't necessarily proactively friendly. By that I mean, smiling, invitational, "have a nice day" kinda guys. But they know their stuff, execute on promises, go the extra mile to match old paints (I have many formulas which are now not available so matching is difficult with new paint bases), and they've accommodated my every wish. Including cracking jokes with me. Early mornings are very busy with painting contractors picking up orders and I try not to go in until after 9AM on weekdays. That small consideration for them has yielded many considerations back to me as a painting housewife. I go back to my first sentence. I wouldn't do a painting project without reviewing the medium I'm working with and my goals with the guys at Gray's. Period. read more

I love Mr. Gray and I love the Redwood City store. San Mateo is a big step down. I was in there last week working on a paint color match. Not a one of the 3 or 4 guys in there asked if they could help. They were all chatting with each other. I am no prude, but being professional does matter, and the language they were using would be better suited for a bar when you talk candidly with your mates over a few beers. Big turn off. Who wants to ask a guy saying "f...." every other word for help with colors? When I do ask for help they are brief, act annoyed that I interrupted their chatting, but they do tear themselves away long enough to give good advice. They do seem to know their product. They just need "house training" to be more professional and client oriented. You can only lurk behind that big desk with your sports shows for so long. Paint quality excellent. read more

Ok, clearly I need to step in here as it has been a loooonng time since anyone wrote a review. I love these guys! Whenever I waltz in with some swatch or picture or "inspiration piece" that requires I pick one perfect paint color from a million options, these guys are ready, willing and patient. Believe me, I am fodder for eye rolling (which they have every right to do when I leave) but they never do. Craig and James in particular are always helpful, clearly know their products and always accurately point me in the right direction. They have saved me tons of time and money. I love this paint shop, *especially* Andy who is super knowledgeable and helpful with paints! We had to get our door restained and Andy helped out with a special tinted varnish. Without being asked, he offered to give us a sample of the color on maple (which they had on hand), showed me what varying numbers of coats would yield and how they contrasted against another product. When our first round of color didn't go as I hoped (the color ended up being too orange for our tastes), Andy provided a great solution (adding a varnish of a different color), all while being mindful of our labor cost constraints, etc. He was clear and explaining how multiple (too many) layers could affect the durability of the door and was just amazing overall! The staff is patient with the silly "I need paint?" Customer and will do their best to pick your brain to help solve your paint problems and guide you to what you need. I've been frequenting this store for 14 years. Some people change out throw pillows. I swap paint colors. Think about it; two gallons of paint can revitalize any room for at least a couple of years but that $30 throw pillow you bought at TJ Maxx is going to make you vow to not shop on low blood sugar ever again about a minute and a half after you bought it. I've used Sherman Williams, Behr (poor you standing in line all weekend waiting for someone to help you), and Kelly Moore, and nothing matches Benjamin Moore paint. The others are either like painting with water, soup, offer no wipeability (yes, it is a word in my world where teenage boys are constantly beating the holy hell out of my walls), or are not fade resistant--paint a room with giant windows and doors that face south and give it three months. As for customer service, I adore all of these guys. Don't be afraid to ask questions. They can coach you through any scenario. Do not walk in acting like a Diva who thinks she's at Neiman's Paint. Tell them you have no freaking clue what you're doing and they'll offer advice. This crew is experienced. Ask for their help and you'll get it. Don't be intimidated. Like Craig (the manager) told me long ago, it's just paint. There is no saving lives here. Know what I mean? read more

I did buy a gallon of paint before I went back for more the first employee told me that the eggshell is one step up from flat. this must be the great example that the employees in San mateo do not know what they are talking about. I know what I ordered buy the employee was still stoned from the night before and was wrong in making up the paint. I know now why he put it in the box before I could see it. My mistake for trusting him.... I was more upset at the attitude and rudeness of the employee ... HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE, and I work in customer service myself. I walked in and despite there being two people standing behind the front desk chatting no one greeted me. I looked at paint samples for about ten minutes and no one asked me if I needed help. Whenever I looked over at the front desk one of the men would smirk at me and turn away, continuing to talk to his coworker. The one other customer in the store looked as angry as me, and it seemed as though he was waiting on the men to do something for him so I just left. The men behind the desk looked happy to see me go. I would recommend this place to no one unless they want to be treated like dirt for trying to give a small business a sale! read more

WORST customer service by none other than the manager. Gave him basic dimension of room, just needed one wall wallpapered. He orders enough for only a quarter of one wall to be wallpapered. When I called him out on this he became extremely angry, rude and totally unprofessional. Blamed me saying that I was insistent I only buy one roll- really dude- I was insistent on only getting a quarter of a wall wallpapered and having to wait weeks to get more ordered? It's your business to know square footage and if you don't - you should at least know ballpark figures. I called back again to reorder- asking basic question on roll amount- again he launches into angry reply about giving exact square footage numbers - although he couldn't order the right amount in the first place. It has the best customer service and alot of contractors go there because of the quality of paint and cheap prices though it not like its crowded with them or anything this is the fastest paint store your not at the counter and someone is helping you already. Common courtesy lacking from employees. I am surprised and disappointed. I called with only 8 minutes until closing, saying I was a passing Hillsdale and asked if it was possible for a paint be mixed. Was informed that was only possible if I had an account. I said "Fair enough," and that as I was close, I would try and get there. I arrived in the parking lot at 5pm - at front door at 5:01pm. The store was literally lights off, locked and closed. Employees at the back door. Those are their hours and I truly don't have any issue with that...what I took umbrage to was the staff's "Okay..." when a simple reminder to me, as a prospective customer that 5pm firm was closing and that would allow them no time whatsoever to grab my primer and sample, and I would have totally understood. Fairs fair! However, hoping to pick up my paint last minute, and having experience that many stores can slide 10 mins to ring up a sale, I gave it a try, rather than just continuing to Orchard Supply. To allow me to continue to the store, without a polite reminder that arriving at 5pm wouldn't work, I find smarmy and disrespectful. read more
