There are dozens of cliched stories about instrument makers; crazed violent, passionate, romantic types who have no time for most people, and often have unorthodox methods and theories behind making the perfect instrument.
Ilga Grawert ticks a couple of these boxes; in description, he is romantic, and he does have very particular ideas regarding violin making. He believes that a lot people give up on learning violin because the set up is wrong. Each violin must be set up according to the individual who plays it. He claims that establishing a trustful relationship between student and violinmaker is of utmost importance because the violinmaker will an integral role in deciding whether a student will continue or give up violin.
Grawert was raised by a violinmaker, and decided to take on an apprenticeship in Bremen, Germany when he was 15. He's been in the business for more than 25 years and obviously prides himself on what he does.
His shop is only open by appointment or by chance (as it reads on his website). He manufactures the violins in the shop ('Italian tradition, German precision' is his catchphrase), often working in his shop's front window, sells all sorts of bowed stringed instruments, does repairs and restorations, and has a large listing of music teachers in Brisbane if you're looking for some professional guidance.
I could go to Allan's Music, or some other such place to get a violin fixed, but I won't, simply because I know that Grawert's exists. Just the fact that I'd get to talk about to a man who has given their life to the violin is just far too irresistible to refuse. read more
