Some of the vintage stores along this strip are so pretentious. You know the kind that are vintage in a really self-conscious hipster try-hard way? Those shops usually have prices just as pretentious as their shop and seem to forget that even though vintage is cool at the moment, it is at its heart pre-owned. No one wants to pay a hundred or so dollars for a dress that probably cost $20 in 1975 just because its vintage.
So the purpose of that little rant was to give you an idea of what Hobohemia is NOT. Hobohemia is a genuine, sincere vintage shop and my favourite in Paddington. No pretension, no unwelcoming staff, just beautiful old things at prices that don't make vintage more exclusive than Oscar de la Renta.
As well as clothes and accessories, Hobohemia has lots of beautiful vintage homewares and furniture. I'm always drawn to the butter jars and old golden circle crates. Hobohemia lives in an old Queenslander which only adds to its authenticity, and on their sweet little front lawn (complete with garden path) they even have some vintage garden toys and tools.
Hobohemia has the ability to transport visitors to the past, and I'm always a little bit surprised when I come back out onto Given Terrace to see traffic lights, new cars, and skyscrapers in the distance. read more
