Recently changed ownership and they are doing a great job revitalizing the place. I've been going here for about 9 years now, first as part of a post running group hangout and now as a local watering hole. They have a rotating selection of beer on top, seasonal as well. A wide selection of wines, and chilled beers are also available. There are so chilled wine bottles and single beer cans you can buy and enjoy at the location as well. Plenty of indoor seating, and outdoor seating too. They also host live music and trivia nights! There are areas for improvement though. As I said it has new owners, but the place is old and desperately needs an interior remodel, and new outdoor seats/tables would be great as well. Food selection is also wanting - chips are the only thing on the current menu as far as I can tell. To sum it up, a great local business with new owners that deserves your support! I wish I had good things to say about this establishment, because I love supporting local businesses. I came in here once to buy a bottle of wine and was sorely disappointed by the selection of chilled wines. However, given how much it probably costs to lease space in this area, I let it slide because they probably needed room in the coolers for other items - not a big deal. Unfortunately (for me), I decided to go in and actually have a drink there today. As soon as I opened the door, my nostrils were (violently) assaulted by the stench of a high school locker room. I was hopeful that the odor would dissipate (or that I would at least grow accustomed to it), but sadly my hopes were as short-lived as the deodorant use of apparently everyone who frequents this place. For what it's worth, the employee was attentive, but passable service just isn't enough to overcome what I shall now refer to as the jock strap era (in the least affectionate way possible). read more

Located in a busy shopping center, this is a super cute spot to have some wine or beer. There's no food or anything. Met a friend here for wine and we sat on the comfy couches. I've always enjoyed shopping for beer here... their selection is good. They also have a wine tasting bar, welcomed BYO food, and had live music on the weekends before the pandemic. What I'm super happy about, though, is their customer service... responsive, really nice, and they deliver to the local area (with minimum purchase)! We aren't getting out much because of a high risk family member, and delivery is our lifeline. Yeah, we're totally okay without beer, but it makes our social isolation a little more fun when we can sit on our patio and enjoy a cool drink with each other. I absolutely adore this place. I have been a regular for over two years. It's my absolute favorite hang out spot. I've become close with all of the bartenders and the owner. So I had a little time to kill and sat at the bar. The young lady bartender seemed confused and out of it. Not only did she give me the wrong beer, she actually put her head down on her side of the bar to take a nap! I had to wake her to order another beer. The short amount of time she was awake, she would be glued to her lap top. I get the feeling that she may be the owners daughter or something, but come on, don't sleep at the wheel. There seemed to be some owner type people chatting at a table but they did not seem too interested in keeping an eye on things. Visits to P&P have been more about the place as a bar-lounge than as a retail store for its beer and wine. What makes a bar vs. lounge or both, I do not know but there is an actual bar and taps AND there is comfortable "couchy" seating to "lounge around." The beer and wine selections for sale and carry home does look to be of good quality and we have purchased beer and wine from there a few years ago, but not in quite some time so it would not be fair to include that part here. So please do stop and see the selections for yourself. And please stay for sip; you will NOT be disappointed if you linger there. You might even see the owners, and share a greeting; they are very friendly, good folken. What we can also comment on more intelligibly is the SELECTION and SIZE of the bar-lounge sitting and drinking area. My my my how you have grown P&P! Congrats! At one time there were only a couple taps and an odd self-service wine dispensing system. Back then, there were only limited couches and seats available, and a couple tables outdoors for seating when the weather is favorable. But now, ho ho ho! There is a nice long bar that seats 4-6, there are more than 5 taps of quality selections and long tables that stretch all the way to the back of the store, and more outdoor seating and the weather has been great, right?!. There is still lounge-style seating but there is more of them. Double the seating as before? Maybe. I am very excited to report that there is live music Wednesday-Friday but we have not gone recently and I am itchy to do so. Maybe this week (I hope!) With more & more and places offering live music, what separates one place from another is the selection of what you are sipping while you listen to the good tunes and of course, the quality and service of the staff. The staff there acts as if they are all family in that they all care about providing you good service as if they were part owners and not just punching a clock or getting a paycheck. When billed for in-house dining, the bill has no line for tip...not sure why since they have brought the beer to our table...in the past, we had long discussions with various employees, some who were actually related to P&P but even if not, you will find the staff good for some chattin' unless you don't want any; they won't intrude on your "date" if that is not your speed. I look forward to adding more to this review once I check out the live music (this week anyone, anyone? Beuller? ) and take a closer gander at the selections of that sweet, sweet amber. read more

With happy hour starting at 4:00, free wine tastings at 6:00 on Fridays, free beer tastings at 6:00 on Saturdays, and incredible live music (no cover) Wednesday through Saturday nights starting at 7:00, it's a great place to bring old friends and meet new ones, since the clientele are as friendly as Pink and Pepe and their staff. I came here to unwind a bit after getting a massage from next door and honestly I wish I had not! The lady at the front was super cold and unfriendly. Upon entering she was texting or surfing the net on her phone right at the register which is so unprofessional. Secondly when she did decide to acknowledge me she looked and me and said "yes" as if I had just walked onto her front porch and not into a business establishment, how rude! I told her that I wanted to have a drink and instead of handing me a menu she asked if I wanted beer or wine and proceeded to quickly run down the short list of wines they had. After I told her what I wanted she went and got it and brought it to the register to ring up the glass instead of asking if I wanted to start a tab and bringing the glass to where where I wanted to sit. I paid and found a seat and watched from afar as she went back to the bar area where other customers were seated by the way and proceeded to interact on her phone. One of the patrons at the bar tried to spark a conversation with her about the shirt she was wearing she quickly shut the conversation down all the while never looking up from her phone. I literally cringes as he awkwardly talked to her while she clearly had no interest in entertaining her bar guest. Within 5 minutes he had gotten up and paid his tab and left... I wonder why? At one point she came from behind the bar and sat at the high tables and proceeded to be on her phone smh you can't make this up! I'm so sad that since we've been here (some time back), so much has changed, all in one visit. For starters, they are no longer dog-friendly. That was a Huge plus over Wine Harvest (the other wino place in Kentlands). And then they don't let you leave your 6-packs in the frig while you are sitting around lounging and drinking. All of that was ok until I went to grab some Chipotle (like other fatties out there, I get hungry when I drink), and while enjoying my meal And wine, the employee (nicely) told me I could only carry out Coalfire or Hakuba. I get that they prob. don't want outside food (except for those 2 places?) but I was: (a) outside, and (b) my back was facing the street, so it's not like people would've seen me advertising Chipotle with a big sign. I saw they now carry little bites like a cheese platter, meat platter (most of which didn't look appetizing and were super overpriced). I get it though, need more business, cut down on other non-senses, but now, there's really no difference between you and others in town. Really, I'm more sad than anything because it means we prob won't be back. Wishing them the best! read more

If you love wine and beer and good hosting then this is a nice fun, relaxing place to go to. From the outside you would not think to go here except to buy some wine or beer. But the setup is very accomodating and relaxing. My girlfriend and her co-workers go here all the time as they work accross the street. They have met Pinky and Pepe as they are always there and I have to say, they are a very friendly couple. Their beer selection goes beyond what normal stores carry here in MoCo, with that being said their wine selection is just as broad. Pinky is the expert in wine as Pepe is more familiarl with the beer. On a nice sunny day or after work, this is a good place to enjoy a nice cold beverage. read more

The Grape Escape is a wonderful neighborhood beer and wine shop where you know you're safe. As a young adult female (age 22), it is invaluable to me that I feel safe when I'm going out. I have never been concerned for my safety walking into The Grape Escape. I imagine parents feel the same way for their children's safety as my girlfriends and I do for ours, and since the Kentlands is home to many families, I'm sure it's a comfort to know they can always go out together for a family night at The Grape Escape without fear of subjecting their kids to any negative or illegal commonalities. Moreover, the owners (Pinky and Pepe Rodgers) work tirelessly in various charity organizations, including recent Toys for Tots charity work. I don't think I've ever met someone with as much genuine kindness and love for all, especially in the ruthless business of restaurant ownership, as Pinky Rodgers. The Rodgers care more about the safety of their patrons than the all-mighty dollar, which speaks to their characters more than any other factor. I've enjoyed my 3 visits to Pinky & Pepe's. The place has a pretty good wine and beer collection, as well as nice ambiance (classy) and decor--I love their wine barrel tables and comfy lounge chairs! I like that they have lots of space up front and that most of the seating area is separated from their merchandise. The first night I went they had a free wine tasting; another night they had a musician that our group really enjoyed. They allow you to order in food from area restaurants (great idea!) and a self-service wine tasting machine (you pay according to what you want to sample: 1/4, 1/2, or full glass)--I love it and want one! I do however think that the sampling fees, in particular the 1/4 glass one is a little high (I think it was $2.50); I wish there was a way you could allow customers 1 free sample (even if it is 1/8 of a glass) of 1-2 of the bottles and then let them purchase more samples. This is especially so when you consider that most area wine tastings are $5-10 for a full list of 8+ wines. The owners/staff were also very friendly, considerate, knowledgeable, and unlike some wine bars also unpretentious--this is always a big plus in my book. Really enjoy stopping here. (And will even more after seeing that they allow puppies in the outside areas!) This place really is one of those community places (similar to the Starbucks on Saturday morning) where you see a number of the same people there time after time. The only downside is that they are so popular that it is really difficult to get in on the weekend. (any chance for an expansion soon?) The weekly tastings (ussually on Friday) are a great way to try a new wine! Pinky and Pepe have built up a number of relationships with other local businesses and will often host events like the Wegmans Thanksgiving Tasting, charity auctions, or encourage buying local chocolates, or having food delivered from a local restaurant. Both owners are great to talk to and the wine reps are knowledgable about not even their own wine, but also other ones that are sold at the shop. (We've been known to ask for something and they will take you to what they think is the best for you rather than pushing their own wines.) This is such a cute little gem tucked away in Kentlands and I'm so glad we found it. They always have something going on..live bands, wine tastings, open mic nights etc..and have a fantastic selection of wine and beer -whatever tickles your fancy. You are able to order take out or delivery from any of the restaurants in Kentlands to go with your drinks but they also have a small menu of cheese and meat platters. The crowd seems to be regular and everyone knows everyone which really gives the spot a homely feeling that we all love and adore. We cannot say enough positive things about The Grape Escape! The beer and wine selections are diverse and reasonably priced, they offer acoustic music Wednesday - Saturday (and it's not so loud that you can't hold a conversation with friends), they welcome dogs, and they allow you to bring in outside food to enjoy! Coal Fire across the parking lot will even deliver!! The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and as you relax in the comfy chairs and sofas, you sort of forget that you're in a store because the front of the store has more of a living room feel about it. And there are plenty of tall tables and chairs toward the back of the store, as well as a nice, small bar area. So, there are seating options for almost any kind of patron. The owners, Pinky & Pepe, are charming, extremely generous local folks who give a tremendous amount of community support to organizations such as the Manna Food Bank, the National Alzheimer's Association, the City of Gaithersburg's Holiday Giving Program, Operation Second Chance, and Toys for Tots. We really liked this aspect of their business. As for some of the negative reviews we see here... we have heard from several people that a competitor in the neighborhood paid them in free wine to post scathing reviews of the Grape Escape here on Yelp. Pretty pathetic. In our humble opinion, the Grape Escape provides our community and local musicians with a warm and welcoming neighborhood environment in which to meet and greet. I have always loved these people since I met them a short 2 months ago. But today, their staff went above and beyond! I come to visit after work and relax before going home. They're always friendly, remember your orders, and always make you smile. Well, I had to call an Uber home, since I don't drive, and my phone died. It also never showed up. So, one of the guys there at the bar whom I had been talking with works there, and so did another. They saw me waiting outside, knowing my phone had died and no one had a charger, and the one gentleman (I didn't catch his name), came outside and called one again for me. And put into his account. It was my first time really using the service myself and had no real idea how it worked. He not only called them, but put it on his account. He was so amazingly sweet! I need to make sure to pay him back! And as for Pinky and Pepe, you couldn't find a more sweet and amazing couple. There are two ways to look at it this place. 1) A beer & wine store where you pay more than you would elsewhere. 2) A drinking spot with an amazing selection where you pay a ton less than you would at any bar. Incredibly impressed by the exceptional contactless customer service I just received this week from Diana and the staff at Grape Escape! I needed to gift a nice bottle of wine to a Kentlands resident celebrating a milestone birthday and I needed to do it fast, BUT...I live in Frederick. I didn't have time to call with kids running around so I filled out the inquiry form on their website during kiddos nap time. Diana, the owner, got back to me within an hour or so. We quickly ping-ponged emails, due to her amazing responsiveness, and by the end of the day the order was confirmed for next day delivery. They called me for payment and even sent me a quick message when it was delivered so I could coordinate an eCard to be sent along with the gift. I mean, what more could you ask for in regards to great service??? Not to mention, I heard you can order your Cava Grill from next door and enjoy it there at GE while sipping on your favorite beverage - not sure if that's still the case with the pandemic but I love wine and I love Cava so it's a no-lose situation.
