We had our first appointment today and I was so blown away by the care and respect we received. I was recommended to Dr. Tsuji's office as my previous dentist Dr Gelle retired. I've been seen by every dentist in the office - Dr Tsuji, Dr Harts, and Dr Chen. Everyone in the office including receptionist Susie is so nice. They do great work. Detailed. And since no one enjoys going to the dentist - I don't dread it here! Right now during Covid Times they are making sure everyone stays healthy and safe. When you arrive you call and wait in your car. Then get called in of course in a mask. They confirm if you've been exposed to Covid and take your temp. Then you gargle hydrogen peroxide. You exit thru the front for 1 way traffic in the office. No waiting area anymore. I have some anxiety around any procedure that isn't a teeth cleaning, and she not only listened to my concerns, but she checked in with me multiple times during the process to makes sure I was comfortable and not feeling any pain. Initially I had a fine experience at Dr. Tsuji's office. I had gone in for a typical cleaning and had a normal experience. Later on this past April, a part of my tooth chipped off. I went into the office to get it addressed, and Dr. Tsuji put in a "temporary" filling. I went in a couple weeks later and Dr. Irene put in my actual filling. We thought it was fine, but I noticed there was still sensitivity and pain even in the months after the appointment. I went in yet again in mid-September to check on the filling with Dr. Tsuji due to the pain that had grown, but he said that there wasn't really anything he could do and that it could be due to any number of factors. At the time I was confused about why he didn't do anything or diagnose the issue. He instead told me that I needed to take care of my gums (again, I think that's fine and true). He then told me different things that I needed to do, which I thought was helpful but strangely off-topic and didn't directly address the issue of that tooth. By early November, I was still experiencing pain, except it got worse. I went to see my dentist back home, and he inspected the tooth, noting that the filling was indeed loose and that, surprisingly, it looked like my tooth was actually fractured and likely had been fractured for some time. I would probably need a crown at this point, which is a pretty painful procedure. I visited another dentist for a second opinion, just to confirm, and he came to the same conclusion. I am shocked. I don't blame Dr. Irene or Dr. Grant Tsuji for the filling getting loose at all. I know that there can be many factors. HOWEVER, given that my tooth was fractured (estimated ~the time of my filling at May), I'm disappointed that Dr. Tsuji did not say anything when I came in mid-September. I wish I knew earlier that I had a fractured tooth. I feel like Dr. Tsuji withheld this information from me, and now I'm experiencing pain and will likely have to go through a painful / harder procedure for that tooth when it could've been avoided altogether. I will not be going back to Dr. Tsuji's office due to his oversight, poor judgment, or withheld opinion. read more

You will not find a better dentist, period. I've had a dozen dentists due to moving around, insurance changes, etc., and nobody even comes close. Dr. Tsuji has that rare combination of skill, sharp general intelligence, and conscientiousness. He really cares about you, cares about your tooth issue, and takes no shortcut to give you the best possible medical care. This guy could have been a top doctor, race car mechanic, engineer, etc., - he is just a very smart and dedicated guy who decided at some point to be a dentist I suppose. In my case he fixed some long-standing problems, kept me advised all along with way, offered me some options and very clearly stated the +/- of each choice without trying to force one on me. After the procedure I got night and weekend calls from Dr. Tsuji himself to make sure I was recovering properly. I am so glad I found this guy. Oh, and his office staff is very organized and pleasant - another bonus. One more bonus is that, surprisingly, his fees were not the top of the scale by a long-shot. I never thought I'd be able to give a dentist 5 stars on Yelp!, but, well, here you go. read more

THOROUGH is my description of Dr. Tsuji. I've been through a few dentists in my life, but Dr. Tsuji really gives patients lots of confidence with his work and explanations. Already, he saved a molar that would've been pulled by others and amazingly, he gave me the dreaded shot in above of the front teeth and into the sinuses, withOUT any pain!!! He first massaged it and slowly inserted the needle and I didn't feel the normal pain from past dentists. Amazing! My friend, Bong Mo, moved to Sunnyvale a few years back, and is considering making the drive to Alameda to have Dr. Tsuji as his dentist! Only thing is, do they have a website??? read more

Was recommended Dr. Tsuji by a friend who swore to me seeing a dentist didn't have to be painful. True enough. Dr. Tsuji and the other dentists there are quick, as painless as they can be and when they're not let you know what to expect and are quick to apologize. And they're super gracious too... they ask, "Have you been flossing?" as if they really mean it and take your word for it when you say yes. Also, I've found them accommodating for emergencies and date changes, which is good because life generally happens unexpectedly. read more

We recently moved to Alameda and had not decided on a dentist. My 9 year-old daughter fell at school and broke one of her front teeth. The piece that broke off was very prominent and I had one hurt and upset little girl. Of course this happens around 4:00 on a Friday. I called Dr. Tsuji's office after finding them on Yelp and was told by the friendly receptionist (Susie) to bring her right in. We waited a few minutes in the lobby and they xrayed her. Waited a few more minutes and Dr. Tsuji took us in. By now I am realizing the office is closing up for the weekend but they never made a mention of it. Dr. Tsuji and two of his assistants stayed after hours on a Friday and reconstructed the tooth completely. It looks as good as new. I cannot even thank them enough and neither can my daughter. First time at this dentist and will be my last time. I would not recommend to anyone to go here. The dentist was very wierd talking about his background and started ridiculing me about my teeth and what's going to happpen if I don't take care of it properly. I didn't like how uncomfortable I was and when I tried to talk, he would talk over me when he was cleaning my teeth. He kept on making my teeth uncomfortable not being careful with the tools on my mouth and not apologizing for it. It was the worst experience I have had at the dentist. I will never want anyone to feel that way. The receptionist put clients on blast on what they need to get done and it's embarrassing and humiliating to have someone tell you what you need to get done in front of other clients. Overall, the experience was humilitating and very unsympathetic. read more

I feel like every time I go, I'm getting a free dental course and learning exactly what's going on. In fact, I'm so pleased I have my family & friends going there too. During any procedures they often check to make sure I'm not feeling pain so the verbal & non verbal communication is excellent. Dr. Tsuji is the best dentist I have ever had. He is right on top of the profession, with the most advanced equipment. I broke off a piece of a bicuspid and he restored the tooth by computer. Yep, that's right. By computer. A digital image created the required half-crown, he pressed a button and the crown was made in 8 minutes! Absolutely amazing. I thought that thing in the hall was a printer ... it was actually a milling machine to make that half-crown. He put it right in, drilled down a high spot, and I walked away with a new tooth. I had no idea technology like that existed. I'm used to waiting weeks for a crown to be made. He was recommended by a friend. The first time I saw him, I had to have a tooth pulled. Other dentists in the past said there would have to be a surgical extraction. Dr. Tsuji said he would try to pull it, giving the odds at 60-40. He pulled it -- painlessly -- no problem. Those hands really knew what they were doing. I was amazed. He is very professional, and quite friendly. I'm still amazed. His staff is the best I've encountered. read more

New Alameda resident here. The office is around the corner from my place and they could accommodate me that week so it was an easy decision. Basically, they're very straight forward about everything. Really thorough explanations about what's happening in your mouth. And the cleanings I've had so far were relatively painless. From what I can gather, the pricing is more or less on par with what one should expect from a good dentist. So even though it's pricey [with my insurance], I guess I can't really complain. In the end, I would recommend this place without any reservations. read more

He did replaced a filling for me this morning, on the recommendation of Dr Takeoka (same facility). Both are professional and courteous, as are the rest of the staff. Dr. Takeoka showed me the crack in the old filling and had me buy off on it needing replacement during a cleaning a couple weeks ago. The lady at the front desk is pretty quirky, but runs a tight ship. She's quick to suggest her family's sushi restaurant (on Park), which seems oddly appropriate after a dentist visit. The filling was painless, amazingly fast and my bite is good. I'll update if there are problems with the insurance filing or anything, but I'm a happy customer. read more

Started with a toothache on Christmas night 2011, going on vacation the next afternoon. I was scrambling to find a dentist to see me the next day, as I knew the dentist I was seeing isn't open on Mondays. My cousin suggested Dr. Tsuji to me, as she had gone there for an emergency root canal. I called the office number and they listed Dr. Tsuji's cell number to text in case of emergencies. I sent out a text detailing the situation I was in and desperate to see a dentist. I received a phone call within the hour from Dr. Tsuji himself!!! He told me he was going to check in the morning what appointments were available and follow up. About 7am, Dr. Tsuji called and said there was an 8am appointment. Dr. Hatta did my emergency root canal and showed me the x-ray. I had gone to my regular dentist 1.5 months ago for a cleaning. The x-ray showed a cavity that had gone all the way down to the nerve of my tooth! How can my x-rays from my previous dentist go from no cavities to needing an emergency root canal within 1.5 months. Dr. Hata thinks they drilled and forgot to fill the tooth. She finished my root canal and since I was leaving for LA that afternoon, she assured me that if I were having any issues to give her a call. She would give me information of colleagues who were located in LA in case I needed to have a follow up. I've stayed with Dr. Tsuji and Dr. Hata since that day. I needed a lot of work done and my teeth and gums were not healthy. You would think my old dentist would have said something to me, but not a word. It took some time but I was able to graduate from getting a cleaning and checkup every 4 months to every 6 months. Normally people hate going to the dentist. I love going to my dentist. Suzy and the rest of the staff are amazing!!! I look forward to my appointments every 6 months =) read more

It is hard to get excited about laying down under a bright fluorescent light with your mouth pried open, but Dr. Tsuji and his staff are as good as it gets! Dr. Tsuji is very friendly, gentle, and straightforward. He is the kind of dentist who remembers the little things, not just with teeth, but the random tidbits of your life, exchanged between the scaling and polishing of those pearly crunchers. I actually look forward to going to the dentist now because of Dr. Tsuji and his sweet staff. His office manager, Susie, and his assistant Mei are fun to talk to, they feel like friends. Like most people, I've always had a hard time going to the dentist. I just got a filling from Dr. Tsuji, and the overall experience was almost fun. The office staff are nice, and the assistant, Mei, is pleasantly chatty. A lot of Japanese-speaking patients come in because Dr. Tsuji speaks Japanese and teaches dentistry here and in Japan. For me it's plus to have the opportunity to use Japanese a little, but he's American born and keeps the feel casual and friendly. He and Mei had a good rapport with me and each other, and it was done before I knew it. He's very quick and skilled, and inspires trust without effort. read more
