We were excited to find a place with good reviews that was so close to our peaceful airbnb, as well as opened at a little later of an hour. We thought it was also a good sign when the parking lot was packed! Well, unfortunately this missed the mark for us. We were seated quickly, but the floors and the table were a bit of a sticky mess, and the table right in the front of the "hostess area" was covered in napkins, spilled drinks, and food all over the floor. It didn't get cleaned for what seemed like quite a while either. We eventually ordered a personal pan pizza and a burger, both of which came out separately, almost 10-15 minutes apart. My pizza came out first, but I felt incredibly guilty eating in front of my very hungry boyfriend, so I waited quite a while to be able to eat with him together, leading to my own food to start to get a bit cold. When his food finally did come out, it was a bit of a disappointment. My pizza was okay, but not incredible. The same can be said of his burger. We are big foodies, but this food felt very "snack bar average". I feel like we could have cooked the meal ourselves for the same quality at home. Our waitress was incredibly nice, but we felt bad that she seemed much more overworked than she should have been. My family and I were traveling and stopped for lunch. Everything was so good it makes me sad that we won't be able to go back unless we're in the area again! What a nasty shithole! I suppose if you enjoy flies swarming all over you at third-world-country levels, you'd find it a genuine delight here. I guess I'm picky that way, but NO THANKS. Well, I tried them and fried green tomatoes at the Grandview Restaurant in Spencer years ago. However, there's also a Grandview Diner in Beaver. Today, I jumped at the opportunity to mark another restaurant off my list. Before going, you must know that the "new" menu they have on Facebook is not the newest menu. I like to plan ahead, so I had already decided on two hot dogs and onion petals before I walked in. To my dismay, onion petals have now been replaced by a $9 onion ring tower, and that's way too much for this ol' gal to handle. Also, they raised the price of hot dogs. I scoured the new "new" menu quickly and discovered they had fried green tomatoes. That's a little treasure you don't see too often. Five slices for around $9. I thought it was a little steep for a place playing Lynyrd Skynyrd and Charlie Daniels in the background, but I do love some "maters," so I decided to give them a whirl. Side note, I have no issue with country and southern rock. However, music sets a certain ambiance for a restaurant. Those prices were a little steep for the "Devil Went Down to Georgia" vibes the diner projects. I paid around 19 bucks for a pop, one hot dog, and tomatoes. It wasn't bad food. The hot dog had a nice slaw. It was sweet, just like my mawmaw used to make. The chili had a good flavor. They only sell English dogs, by the way. I like English dogs, so that wasn't a big issue with me. Unfortunately, I wasn't a huge fan of the "maters." I thought they lacked flavor and were kind of mushy. I felt a little let down. I expected them to be better for the price and also because folks had recommended them. Would I go back? Nah. I can mark this one off the list. I kinda wish I had gone to Olive Garden, lol. Great find. Fantastic hospitality. Good burgers and onion rings. We didn't have any, but looked like there was a homemade pineapple upside down cake on the counter. Inside has about 7 tables. I stopped here on a vacation to West Virginia. I think this was the only restaurant in the area. Fairly mediocre food. I had the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich with a side salad and chips. My friend had a grilled chicken salad but it came without chicken. The staff was very friendly but new. So she struggled with some things, which is fine. Not docking points for that. Mostly docking points because of the mediocre food and the salad didn't arrive with any chicken on it (which my friend just ate it and didn't bother complaining). I looked upon YELP for guidance and was rewarded by being advised to eat at The Grandview Diner. What a breath of fresh air. Charming hostess and equally kind and welcoming wait staff. The Diner is run by three Southern Ladies who run a tight ship. Very clean and warm service prepare you for a terrific meal. I had breakfast this morning with eggs over easy ( done to perfection ) hash browns ( done to perfection ) and topped off with ...you guessed it...sausage and grits ( done to perfection ) A true find for travelers who find themselves in Beaver or Beckley West Virginia. If your Mom and Pop took over an old Subway, sprinkled a long time collection of lighthouse themed objects around the place you'd have some idea of what this place looks, feels and tastes like. Lighthouse themed weeds bringing life and character to the former corporate blandness. But sometimes, when you've got a long morning's driving in the rear view, and a long afternoon's driving ahead of you, all you want for lunch is honest food, at honest prices, just next to a gas station off the highway. I got the Philly Sandwich with fries. It tasted great, just like my mother had made it. But understand that my mother has never been to Pennsylvania, never-mind Philadelphia. I like to give detailed reviews when first trying a place. I think it helps people when wondering what they should try, but keep in mind that these are my tastebuds and my opinions. I want to first start off by saying that the best part of our experience was our waitress Chris? Kris? Sorry about the spelling. She's an absolute sweetheart and very good at her job. Due to her personality alone it led me to order more things off of the menu to taste test. So here it goes.... Smash burger- good, but they weren't smash burgers, just regular burgers not smashed. Fries were good and fresh. Ranch dressing was good I would rate it 3/5 and it is homemade. Homemade chips were good dipped in the ranch. Salads are large, but I don't care for spring mix so it wasn't for me. Potato salad had a good flavor it had bacon in it, but there were several hard potatoes that were undercooked and crunchy so that was disappointing. Pasta salad is good Cole slaw ehhh no flavor Macaroni salad was flavorless very disappointing. Mac n cheese is a white cheese sauce and it was ok. All of these sides are homemade. Ice cream next door pretty pricey- $1 for the cake cone and $3 per scoop of ice cream that isn't packed into the cone so the cone is empty inside. I got a piece of the lemon blueberry cake and it was good. All in all I would rate my experience a 5/10. Would probably go up depending on who made the sides, etc. it's definitely worth trying. They're very clean. I'll try something different next time. I paid almost $39 before tip for the grilled cheese, fries, salad, macaroni salad, potato salad, cole slaw and Mac n cheese and ranch dressings. I paid almost $15 for two regular cake cones with one scoop of ice cream on top of them and a slice of lemon blueberry cake. read more
