On this visit, the sun was shining, the temperature never climbed above 80 degrees, and the winding country roads were perfect with the sunroof open. By the time I arrived, it already felt like I'd left the rush of everyday life behind. I've always been fascinated by how real maple syrup is made. The kind that comes from the sap of maple trees rather than the artificially flavored syrups so many of us grew up with. While I didn't get to see the sugaring process itself, Hidden Springs Maple serves as the retail home for the family operation. Inside, the rustic barn-style shop is wonderfully nostalgic, with weathered wood, shelves lined with glass bottles and jars, and the unmistakable feeling of an old-fashioned country store. It feels less like a gift shop and more like a place where New England traditions have been carefully preserved. The young man behind the counter patiently entertained every one of my tourist-style questions, answering each with genuine enthusiasm and an obvious pride in the craft. Before making a purchase, I was invited to sample three grades of syrup--Amber Rich, Dark, and Very Dark (Robust)--a thoughtful touch that lets visitors appreciate how the flavors deepen from one variety to the next. Amber Rich was my favorite, and I happily left with a jug, along with maple cream, locally produced honey, smoked maple syrup, and a gift box of regional jams. Now comes the only real challenge: figuring out how to pack the maple jug and those glass jars for the trip home without breaking a single one. The Cuban covered all the savory/sour notes! Some of the sandwiches are already prepared in the deli case if you need a little steering. You can grab lunch for $10 or less, even if you're not a co-op member, but we ended up filling the cart while we were at it. Smaller that supermarkets but still a well stocked, this is oasis hiding just off Main Street, and better yet, this co-op has its own parking lot (car and bike). Whenever I travel, I enjoy researching and supporting local businesses. I chose this café because of its excellent reviews and was excited to visit after a hike. Unfortunately, I left feeling unwelcome and disrespected. I ordered a simple turkey wrap with vegetables and asked a few questions about unclear pricing and the gluten-free options advertised. An older woman behind the deli counter became visibly irritated, saying she couldn't help because she'd have to unpack and slice the turkey. She passed my order to another employee. Shortly afterward, I noticed her whispering to a younger employee, and both laughed while looking in my direction. Another employee later made a po Yankees comment to me after noticing my Red Sox hat. While harmless on its own, it added to an already uncomfortable atmosphere. Despite no customers visibly ahead of me, I waited nearly 30 minutes for my deli sliced turkey wrap. I never complained to anyone working there. After receiving my food, I went outside to the seating area with my two companions. The same woman approached and confronted me, accusing me of speaking disrespectfully to her employees. I was stunned because I had done nothing of the sort! She then questioned where I was from and seemed surprised when I answered New Hampshire, just across the border. What does me ordering lunch have to do with my residency? I couldn't help wondering whether my appearance or ethnicity played a role. I cannot know her motivation, but I felt singled out and humiliated. Ironically, the café displayed a rainbow flag symbolizing inclusivity, yet my experience felt anything but welcoming. My companions witnessed the confrontation and were equally shocked. To make matters worse, my poorly assembled wrap fell open before I could eat it. Given how I was treated, I felt uncomfortable eating it and honestly worried after that interaction so decided to throw it away after wasting my money and left there hungry. I also noticed another review describing a similar negative interaction. However, I DO want to acknowledge that the gentleman who handled my payment was absolutely lovely, and I appreciated his kindness. I understand employees have difficult days, but asking reasonable menu questions should never result in apparent mockery or being confronted outside. It's especially disappointing to see this behavior modeled in front of younger staff. I genuinely hope the owners take this feedback seriously. Inclusivity should be reflected not just in signage but in how every customer is treated. Hoping this just is an isolated incident because my time in Vermont was awesome and everyone else was so nice.

The steps are ancient into this very old store. The store carries a little bit of everything. Wine, local cheeses, bread and much more. The store is clean and well organized. The croissant was a bit different from a traditional croissant but it was still fluffy, flaky and delicious. Croissant paired perfectly with my latte. Service was great. There was a young lady working by herself and she was friendly. I sat in the coffee shop for an hour enjoying my coffee. Lots of tables to sit and enjoy your coffee too.
