This little gem near Okemo is a must if you're in the area. People come from all over to stock up on their smoked pork products. Many friends say it's the best bacon ever. It's a little dusty and amusingly hokey but whoever their buyer is, they sure know how to stock the shelves with everything from patè, local beers & cheeses, organic lip balm, California wines, and KUHL outdoor gear, to elderberry cough syrup. Serious Sandwiches, frozen prepared foods, and everything in between.

If you are anywhere within 30 miles of mountain roads away you owe it to yourself to get some of the best food anywhere. The sandwiches are unbelievable, and the have a huge selection of Everything. Top quality and super friendly. Almost forgot to mention it's a museum also.

Stop by here on your way to Okemo! Get one of their elite deli sandwiches for your lunch on the slopes. They have the freshest ingredients and load you up with thick slices of meat. They have everything a general store would have in a small New England town. Their meat selection is something to be admired. You will pay a premium but you can't get anything close within 100 miles and your supermarkets will not compare. The store also has antiques, guns, ammo, and a whole bunch of other things for surviving in the woods I guess so the place itself is worth the visit.

Reuben. For some reason they didn't put Russian dressing on it. Tasty but missing an essential ingredient.

A market with all food necessities and a deli, fish and meat market. Surprisingly large and well stocked. They even sell alcohol with surprisingly good prices on whiskey. Be warned, the deli has tasty sandwiches, but service was slow, especially for hot sandwiches. I ordered a Reuben and they served up seven other sandwiches before I got mine. I really thought they forgot about me because sandwich staff barely acknowledged patrons.

Proctorsville is a cute, little, and relatively empty town; so we were surprised to see so many cars parked outside Singleton's. We knew we had to make a stop! This store is a one-stop shop for so many things: your groceries, your clothes, your guns and ammo, your liquor, your hunting gear... I'd really be surprised if there was something that wasn't in this store. The prices were pretty competitive, too! We found a somewhat uncommon rye whiskey for an unbeatable price. The decor includes lots of old guns along the top of the wall, which was a little surprising at first, but it adds to the historic charm.

#3 Singletons Smokehouse: Smoked ham, smoked turkey, smoked bacon, cheddar, lettuce and maple mustard on wheat. The bacon is quite good.

Oh yeah. This place is special. Just be careful if you put Singleton's into your GPS. There are two of them. Being a tourist, and unfamiliar with the geography of the area, I accidentally found myself at this location instead of the Hartford spot. No big deal. It's vacation. So it was just a chance to do a little more exploring. I was told to get a sandwich. The problem was that I wasn't told which sandwich to get. And they have 24 signature sandwiches, so it took me a while to get through the menu and decide. Some people love Boar's Head meats. I'm not one of them. Actually, I have lots of feels when it comes to sandwiches. Wraps rub me the wrong way. Most sandwich shop tomatoes are terrible. In the end, I went with the #3 Singleton's Smokehouse. Because while all of the sandwiches were their "signature sandwiches" this is the one that bears the name. Plus it's filled with three smoked meats, cheddar, and maple mustard. Oh yeah, and no tomato. It was wonderful. It came wrapped in wax paper, and I was able to eat it in the shade at one of the picnic tables outside. Really, I wolfed it down. I was supposed to be in Woodstock, so I had to head off. But not without picking up a couple incredible four packs of Vermont craft beer, and a bag of ice for the cooler. Seriously, the beer in this state is amazing. And I couldn't resist a small pack of their beef jerky. You never know when you might need a power snack. It was tasty, if on the tougher side. But they don't call it jerky for nothing.

He was beyond friendly & wanted to make sure our questions were answered. The freezers are conveniently labeled so that you can find the products you desire. Love that they bring in various vendors, including Fossil Farms (NJ) but also some local NH products. There are also other products, such as dressings, marinades, seasonings, etc. for sale. The store is small but very clean. Taking a left onto route 4 is a challenge but still worth a visit. The prices are extremely fair! There is also a rewards program where you can get $ off for every so many points. We signed up that very day & already have 58 points. For example, you earn $5 off for 50 points, or $10 for 100 points etc. Worth it to me! Jason said they are currently working on a new location in Epsom at the circle. It will have a different name & more of a butcher shop. He plans to keep The Healthy Buffalo open for another year, depending on inventory & how sales go with the new location.

In truth, mass produced inhumanely raised pork that most Americans lavish over, just does not do it for me. Over the last couple years as I have started to eat better quality protein and less carbs, I have become more of a bacon fan. I usually buy Applegate Farms uncured sunday bacon (expensive!), which I think is really good (cool tip from Jacques Pépin that makes bacon even better: http://youtu.be/tNYL9mLAFyY). I have not had Flying Pigs bacon yet, only their eggs, so this five star review is based on their eggs only. When I try their bacon I will do an update. But from what I gather online, they treat their pigs nicely...well, until they kill them. Getting back to the eggs. The eggs are are delicious and very FRESH. You can tell by looking at the white part, it is well formed and firm. The yolks are darker too. Life is too short not to eat pasture raised eggs (that said, they still get a good % of their diet from grain and soy). "Cage Free" means nothing! These are not organic eggs, but in this context I'm not sure what that means or how significant that is. Also, last week they were selling a dozen for $3.50 which is a great value. Much better than the $8 or now $10 egg place a few stalls down! In my opinion, these are the best eggs at the Union Square Greenmarket when taking into account quality and value.

This was a great suggestion. I selected the House Roast Beef sandwich ($13) - with lettuce, tomato, Vermont cheddar, and garlic aioli, served on a kaiser roll. The roast beef was rare, juicy and the other ingredients helped to make it a hardy and delicious sandwich. My wife had the Veggie Lover's Delight ($12) - with roasted red and yellow peppers, red onion, lettuce, tomato, and cucumber, served on sourdough bread with a goat cheese and pesto spread. Their refrigerator cases had the makings for a simple picnic to an extravagant spread -- and everything in between. It's called the Village Butcher because it also is a butcher shop in addition to selling sandwiches. There is no inside seating, but there is plenty of outdoor tables. This is the kind of place you wouldn't discover on your own, but it makes for a great lunch spot.

We got there pretty early and were the only ones in the store, and we do have to say that the service here is impeccable. We were greeted with such genuine warmth and kindness, and the young man helping us could not have been more hospitable. Unfortunately, there's a pretty limited selection for breakfast items, but we were happy to score a spinach-cheddar turnover that had just come out of the oven. It was BEYOND--so good with a healthy amount of spinach and flaky, not greasy puff pastry shell. We salute you! (Last year we had a mushroom turnover that was equally impressive despite not being straight out of the oven.) The egg & cheese breakfast sandwich was a little more dull in comparison--still good, but could have used more seasoning and pizzazz. Anyway, we think it's probably better to come here for lunch to get a heartier meal because sandwiches seem to be their thing. We're looking forward to trying one on our next visit. Either way, a great place worth visiting if you're in Woodstock.
