Check-in was in the restaurant. I couldn't use my code to get into my room. Frustrating. Lady gave the new code to my sister without me even being there. Noisy fan all night. No elevators so pack lightly. Housekeeping opened my door an hour before checkout and I was still in my undies - she apologized when I asked 'what time is check out?' Water was cold for the 'jacuzzi' tub by 9 a.m. so highly disappointed. For the 2 bills I paid to stay in this place I'd give it 3 out of 5 stars. Very clean and historic.

I wasn't sure what to expect when we walked in to this hotel for dinner. It was late and most places were closed. The decor is very odd but the menu is worth the find. We ordered the crab cake. It was filled with giant chunks of fresh crab meat. The sauce on the side was very complimentary to the cake. The chicken was sous vide. The meat falls off the bone and tastes amazing. Juicy and flavorful! The dinner is also served with a loaf of bread with a side of butter. We were very pleasantly surprised!

The only reason this is a 2 instead of a 1 is because the manager gave us "what I thought" was a good rate for a 2 night stay ($250) on a Wednesday and Thursday night with a 1 day notice. Upon arrival, you're blown away. You walk into this 4 star dining room with decor that blew us away! That feeling went away within 10 minutes. As soon as you top the stairs to the second floor landing, you quickly realize that this is a just a restaurant, with beds upstairs. The immediate smell of urine was overpowering. I wrote it off as the musk you generally experience in older buildings at first, but after multiple trips through that hallway, it became apparent that the smell was definitely more like urine. Luckily the door to our room blocked the smell. I have dogs. Urine smells like urine. The room was weird (Room 205). You walk into what looks like a motel room out of a bad French movie. 1980's wallpaper, cabinetry, decor. The wood floors were very sticky. (We never walked barefoot once) The furniture was average. Heavily used and kind of dirty looking. Extremely bad water damage stains on ceiling. Loose popcorn and discoloration. The bathroom was strangely separate from the shower. The toilet-sink room had newer fixtures in it. The massive 1987 four person jacuzzi/shower room was slightly impressive, due to the skin-sheering water pressure and extraordinary air-conditioning. Careful stepping out of the tub. The marble is polished and slick as ice. On to the master-main bedroom. Complete different decor. Canopy style bed made out of fake wrought iron. The AC barely blew in that room. We slept HOT with the thermostat on 68. So did our daughter on the couch. But you could hang meat in the shower room. Explain that... haha. There were two big windows that looked out onto the balcony where they had stored a bunch of old food carts that were rusted up and some old broken patio furniture. Mix in cigarette butts and old planters. There was a 27" TV with cable in the bedroom, the living room ironically had a TV smaller than my Dell Laptop with cable. The food- I'm a chef. So I'm already a food snob before I open the menu. But I'm open minded and always hungry. The scallops w/risotto were perfect. The chicken pasta was great. The 22oz Ribeye, well, that deserves a review on its own. I eat steaks everywhere. We live in Central AR so if we want a decent price cut of beef, we'll hit the Butcher Shop. 30 bucks gets you 2 lbs of prime rib. And when I order a steak rare, I don't want medium, blue rare or well done. 130 degrees. That's it. I even told the waiter 130 degrees. It came out Medium Rare. I should have sent it back. No one would have known. We were the only patrons in the place. (8pm on a Wednesday) But I bit my lip, ate the steak, the 4 potatoes I got and a bite of broccoli. 50 bucks for a cut of meat that wasn't aged more than a few weeks. That left me pretty ticked, considering they advertise the chefs name on the sidewalk. Jeff something. The Grand Taverne Steak Sauce is a mixture of Country Bobs Steaksauce, with powdered cayenne pepper and a hint of mustard. It did not compliment the over cooked steak. The bread smelled fresh, but was microwaved. We asked for fresh bread and had a steaming loaf that scalded my hand as I cut into it, delivered within 1 minute. We didn't go to the bar. There wasn't anyone in there anyway and I didn't want to pay 14 bucks for a Bloody Mary. Overall, it's a pretty building. But that's about it. Theres a homeless mission in a church next door that shares the parking lot. The guy working there playing piano drove a green Honda that was parked in guest parking Thursday night until around 11pm. We had to wait for him to leave to park our car in the closest thing they have to handicapped accessible parking. The only other option is in the church/mission barely lit parking lot. I mentioned it to the ponytailed host/dude and he said "we don't have any handicapped spots and I can't just make him stop playing to move his car". He wasn't rude per say, but I could tell he could care less about my request. I should also mention that this establishment is not ADA friendly. No ramps to enter the building and only stairs to reach the rooms. They certainly couldn't accommodate someone who was chair bound. When we go back, we'll rent outside of town where the price drops, and just drive into town and grab a daily trolley pass. We will not revisit this establishment. *** I forgot to mention an envelope was left beside our bed to tip the cleaning staff, if we so chose ***

We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the cuisine on a weeknight offseason, when we were practically the only diners in the lobby of the Grand Hotel. It bills itself as the oldest and largest hotel in town, but what drew us was the view of the chef wearing a toque, seen from the street through a picture window. I had the Arkansas "hawg" pork chop with scalloped potatoes, carrots and asparagus ($22). The chop was huge, tender and flavorful, with a red wine sauce and Dijon mustard provided at my request. It could not have been better. I recommend avoiding the frozen items on the menu including Walleye and scallops; the waitress knew what was frozen. Seeing your meal cooked in an open-air kitchen in front of you, and having such a flavorful pork chop made it worth every penny. There are not many restaurants open in Eureka Springs in the middle of winter, but I would eat here again even if dozens of alternatives had been available.

The aforementioned excellent half duck.

If I could, I would give this place 4.5 stars. Short version: great food, somewhat joyless atmosphere. I had the half duckling which was immaculately plated and tasted wonderful. The accompanying sweet cabbage and rice added texture and additional flavor. Big thumbs up here. For dessert , I had the goat cheese cheesecake. Fantastic, and it was not too heavy. Overall, this is a higher-end restaurant, and the quality of the food justifies the price. What bothered me a bit was the somewhat dark, slightly overly stuffy feel of the place. To be fair, the clientele this place wants might demand that sort of feel. But for me, this place is turning out gorgeous, great tasting food, and it seems a bit of a shame that the vibe of the place lacks the joy the diner gets when enjoying her/his dinner.

Beware of Tyler, the tyrant psychotic sociopath owner of The Palace Bath House!…read more I visited the Palace Hotel and Bath House expecting peace and relaxation. Instead, I walked out shaking, humiliated, and in tears -- an experience I will never forget for all the wrong reasons. The mineral bath area consists of small cubicles with no ceilings, something I was never told. I didn't hear or see anyone else, so I genuinely believed I was alone. While in the bath I was trying to meditate but then someone started playing very distracting music that interrupted my meditation and I asked politely for the music to be turned off when someone changed it to something distracting. I made normal, reasonable requests -- a towel, a time extension -- nothing out of the ordinary for a spa. When I went upstairs afterward, everything changed instantly. The owner, Tyler (appeared to be in her 40s -50s had shoulder length completely gray hair) approached me out of nowhere and told me she was "astonished by my behavior" and that I was "the rudest person" she had ever had as a customer. I was stunned. I had no idea what she was talking about. She accused me of "yelling" and "ruining the experience" for others -- even though I had spoken calmly and had no idea the entire facility shared open acoustics. I immediately apologized, over and over, because I felt horrible. I was crying, shaking, and trying to explain that I truly believed I was alone. Instead of listening, she doubled down. She told me I was "blacklisted" and needed to leave. Meanwhile, other patrons -- the very people she claimed I had disturbed -- came to comfort me. They told me I had done nothing wrong. They hugged me. They reassured me. They told me her reaction was completely out of proportion. I ended up having a panic attack from the shock and humiliation. My entire day was ruined. Days later, I am still shaken. When I tried to call to request a refund, I discovered my number had been blocked. No conversation. No explanation. No willingness to resolve anything. I have never in my life been treated the way I was treated at this business. I left feeling berated, belittled, and publicly humiliated for something I didn't even know I had done wrong. The lack of sound privacy, the aggressive confrontation, the refusal to communicate afterward -- all of it paints a very clear picture. Bottom-line, BEWARE of The Palace Hotel and Bath House and the tyrant psychotic sociopath who runs this establishment, TYLER! My experience was emotionally devastating, and no guest or human in general deserves to be treated this way. Consider yourself warned.

Of course, when I chose to visit Eureka Springs, I had to experience the last remaining original…read morebath houses in Eureka Springs. I got the works; the steam cabinet, a mineral bath, and a massage. I was so relaxed by the end of it I could barely walk or think straight. I even fell asleep during the massage! Only downside for a more modern customer is that the spa layout is completely original. There are no sound barrier walls or anything. The walls and doors aren't floor to ceiling, so one can hear toilets flushing, tubs draining, etc. But it's great for feeling transported back to the old holistic, homeopathic ways.
