I recently dined at the Grand Buddha Bistro, and overall, it was a little disappointing. The ambiance is serene, with beautiful décor that really sets a relaxing mood. The spring rolls were flavourful and you could tell they were made fresh in house. That said, the service was a bit slow there was no dinner rush with only three other tables with customers and eventually we were the only patrons in the restaurant and we were still waiting for our food. The Pad Thai dishes looked appealing but turned out to be too salty. The Ginger beef dish had the meat overcooked and the veggies almost raw. I would have a difficult time recommending this restaurant to anyone after our experience and give yourself a little extra time to savor the evening! read more

I was staying in the hotel next door, so the location was very convenient. I called my order in and they got right on it. I was surprised to see the place completely empty when I went in to pick my order up. The hostess at the front counter was very nice and got my order to me with a smile. I got an order of Pad Thai to go. I was a bit shocked at how expensive it was. I dug in as soon as I got back to my room. The Pad Thai smelled just ok as I opened up the box. It looked tasty, but noticed it also looked pretty plain. A little bit of shredded lettuce on top of the noodles was about it for vegetables. No cilantro. A wedge of lime on the side. There was a decent amount of chicken, but teeny-tiny salad shrimp were accompanying the chicken. Hmm. The noodles were cooked just right. I couldn't really detect that savory peanut sauce I was hoping for. It was good, but quite bland overall. Definitely not worth the price in my opinion. Though I'd be willing to try something different from their menu. Their Pho sounded good. Maybe next time. read more

I was very pleasantly surprised by the Grand Buddha Bistro! Never mind the fact that my phone keeps trying to auto populate the name to Grand Budapest Hotel... however, it is good to note that the restaurant is located in one wing of the Fireside Inn. It's a pretty modern and beautifully decorated space inside the restaurant. It was very empty when I arrived at 11:30am on a Friday at lunchtime, but I was greeted warmly. I ordered a lemongrass pork vermicelli bowl ($16), and I asked if I could just get a small cup of pho broth on the side. They only charged me $1 for the broth! What a steal! The vermicelli bowl was excellent. The pickled vegetables were bold in flavor; and the pork was juicy and tasty. My only complaint was that the cucumber was cut into very large sticks, rather than julienned to be mixed into the bowl. I wish they had cut it smaller so I could actually eat it with the rest of the noodles, rather than having to munch on cucumber sticks separately. In the "culinary wasteland that is Castlegar" (as put by another Yelper), Grand Buddha Bistro is definitely an oasis. read more

Food was overpriced for what you get. I ordered shrimp salad roll which was the best dish and it was average. I ordered the ginger beef. Food was warm and not hot. Flavor was good but sauce could be thicker. My friend ordered the pho and the soup was dark and it was very salty. The portion was large so I took some to taste. Looking on Yelp for a place to eat on our first night in Castlegar BC. Reviews were good mostly but several years old. We were greeted by a hostess that was also the waitress. The menus is straight forward and concise, so with help we decided on the crispy beef veggies and rice. We also had the salad rolls with peanut sauce. The salad rolls were pretty bland , saved by the sauce. The crispy beef was exceptionally full flavored , and irresistible with sweet and savory notes, ending with a fresh citrus touch. So good. Stopped in on my way to the Castlegar airport. This has got to be some of the best Thai/Vietnamese food in the interior. We had: 1. Tom Yum Phò: A Thai-Vietnamese fusion of two of my favourite dishes. This huge bowl had lemongrassy broth and noodles done right. Plenty of seafood between the squid, prawns and surimi (imitation crab - could have done without this). Accompanied by fresh Thai basil, crunchy bean sprouts, and bright red birds-eye chilli, which you should add if you want it spicy (otherwise pretty mild). 2. Thai Green Chicken Curry: Classic preparation, great flavour and nice balance of veg (baby corn, broccoli, red peppers) and chicken. Only downside is it's very mild. The side spring role was veg filled and a bit oily, could have done without it. 3. Shrimp Salad Roll: lots of shrimp and great peanut sauce. Unfortunately, it was not rolled tight enough and as such was a bit messy. 4. Chicken Satays: nicely marinated and cooked properly. Would recommend this spot if visiting or driving through Castlegar, BC. read more

A hidden gem in, sad to say, the culinary wasteland that is Castlegar. If you rely on Yelp, you will see it located in a different place in the map from the directions provided (hopefully this will change in the future). Trust the directions; even so, you may wonder where the restaurant is when you arrive. It's hiding around the side of a nondescript hotel off the main drag. Signage is not visible from either direction. A pity. If you navigate these hurdles you are in for a treat. My pho was plentiful and excellent, not over salted like many versions but with just the right body and flavor. My spouse's massaman curry, at a reasonable $22 the most expensive thing on the menu, made me second guess my enjoyment of the pho. The peanut sauce for the tofu rice paper wraps made me contemplate intellectual property theft. As residents of nearby Nelson we're accustomed to having abundant restaurant options, but finally discovering Grand Buddha has given us a reason to go elsewhere for top-drawer, affordable food. read more

We came here during lunch during a road trip, and the tables were suitably spaced out, with hand sanitizer and a sign-in sheet at the door. The restaurant looked very clean and well taken care of, and is attached to the hotel next door. We ordered the lemongrass pork vermicelli and the vegetable vermicelli. Food came out very fresh, nicely presented, and we really enjoyed our meal. The portions are substantial. There are plenty of vegetarian options on the menu. Service was very friendly and stayed physically distanced, but staff members I saw were not wearing masks. Would definitely come back, if we are in the area again. read more

Overpriced. Ordered two pad thais at $19 a pop. Not authentic, covered in shredded iceberg lettuce - what the. The wife also said it was super salty (I didn't try myself - ordered for her and mother in law). Chicken wings - my family didn't even finish half, seemed deep fried in too much batter vs the "dusted" in potato starch as it says on the menu - more like drenched. Some of the pics other yelpers have posted look tasty so maybe we just ordered the wrong items or caught the kitchen on an off day? Otherwise I don't get all the 4 or 5 star reviews. Who would have though that there is a Chinese restaurant in Castlegar? Turns out better than burger st the pub. After a 400 miles day on the bike, beer is perfect but one may need some real food as well. Yes, there is pizza, burgers, bar food and so on. But when the 7' tall says he does not want to eat and yet finishes two big Chinese dishes, that's good food. Besides, we asked chef to make food the way he would make it for himself. This is one of those "hidden gem" spots, tucked away next to an unassuming hotel, a place where the food is delicious, the decor is spot on, and the vibe is low-key...but if you're driving fast and in a hurry, you'll miss it! On the day my boyfriend and I stopped by the Grand Buddha Bistro, it had been raining since we left Ainsworth, so we were ready for something bright-yet-warm to fill our bellies. Grand Buddha fit the bill with their wonton egg-noodle soup, in a bowl so big I think we could have gone swimming in it. The broth was simple yet flavorful, the toppings were fresh, and the wontons were chewy and delicious. Yum! Little things that are also amazing about this place: - reusable chopsticks (nice and sturdy for lifting lots O' noodles) - excellent music selection (something called "Buddha Radio" based out of Australia - check it out!) - all the IKEA furnishings (hey, it's pretty to look at, and functional at the same time!) :-) - fast and friendly service If you're passing through Castlegar en route to somewhere else, slow down and find this place. Surprisingly delicious Asian restaurant. Had the red veggie curry. It was really really good. Sooooo many veggies and super flavorful. The Brussel sprouts were some of the best I've ever had. The party I was with also ordered a delicious veggie pad Thai and beef vermicelli dishes. Everyone was super happy with their meals. Lots of veggie options and they offer tons of bubble teas... Love this place! It's a real gem in the city of Castlegar. Too bad I live in Nelson. But that doesn't stop me! The food is flavourful and well portioned. Cashew chicken salad is my fav. The pho is tasty though I wish there were more options (tripe!) and perhaps smaller sizes could be offered. The bubble tea is spot on - perfect pearls every time. And the service is gracious. I wish I knew the fellas name here. He is very attentive and friendly. You can tell he's proud of what he does.. And proud he should be! Feel free to open another location in Nelson!! read more

A friend referred me to Grand Buddha Bistro, and told me about how good the Pho is, I didn't expect it to be so good, and authentic tasting!
