You walk in and you feel right at home. You can tell that everything is made from scratch and most likely DOES come from a farm nearby. Hubs and I started with an incredibly creamy and delicious seafood chowder- studded with oodles of fresh fish, and then moved onto a Scallop Salad with bacon and other tasty morsels. So divine. Though we're not big dessert people, the Irish seem to love it and there is a huge table of desserts right in the front of the restaurant that beckons you. We caved and ordered the creamiest, most decadent and lovely lemon pie tart that I have ever had. I am pretty sure they must add cream to the filling just for fun. I mean, it's Ireland and they add cream to everything. So. good. Go here. Eat and be happy. Have dessert. You won't be sorry.

The place was small but felt newly remodeled and like all the other restaurants in Ireland so far, the staff was very nice. We had pasta (penne Bolognese) and a spicy pepper and sausage pizza. Both were good, not the best we've ever had but we were happy with our decision to go there. After we ate, we started chatting with the couple next to us. We were impressed that they managed to eat a plate of chicken wings as a starter and soup, followed by a full Irish dinner for him, and a large salad for her. They were likely equally impressed that we finished our pizza, garlic bread and most of the pasta, followed by a HUGE piece of chocolate cake and ice cream! The only negative review about this little restaurant was that the bathroom was dirty. We would still recommend, and hopefully that's a non-issue for anyone else. On paper, the proposition is difficult to quarrel with: Irish ingredients, rotisserie cooking, an attractive room, and a menu written with sufficient enthusiasm to make a hungry man begin making irresponsible decisions before the waiter has even arrived. Unfortunately, menus are promises. Dinner is where the promises are collected. And ours came due rather poorly. The food was disappointing, not catastrophically bad, which would at least have made for a more interesting story, but simply nowhere near what we expected from a restaurant built so confidently around its cooking. There is a great difference between a meal being technically edible and a meal making you pleased that you ordered it. Ours spent considerably more time in the first category. The greater disappointment, however, was the service. A restaurant can survive an imperfect plate remarkably well when the people looking after you are attentive, engaged, and interested in making the evening work. Human beings are wonderfully forgiving creatures when somebody appears to care. The reverse is also true. When the food disappoints and the service seems equally uninterested in rescuing the occasion, dinner begins to acquire the atmosphere of a contractual obligation. You eat because you have ordered. You wait because apparently that is now your occupation. And eventually you pay because international law still frowns upon simply wandering away. That was roughly the trajectory of our evening. What makes it particularly unfortunate is that The SpitJack has all the ingredients of a restaurant I should have liked. The concept is appealing. The setting works. The menu creates expectations. There is clearly an idea behind the place. But an idea does not cook dinner, and a concept cannot look after a table. Execution must eventually enter the proceedings. Ours apparently had the evening off. This was not an angry experience so much as a disappointing one. I have eaten terrible meals that became wonderful stories. This was not terrible enough to become folklore. It was merely expensive in the currency that matters most when travelling: an evening. Perhaps we caught them on the wrong night. Every restaurant is entitled to one, and the overwhelmingly positive reputation of the place suggests plenty of diners have had a very different experience. We can only review the evening we were actually served. And ours was two stars. One for the promising concept. The other for reminding me that expectations, like soufflés and political careers, are surprisingly easy things to collapse. Would I return? Possibly, but only because Mark Twain understood an important principle of life: "sometimes a man deserves a second chance." Dinner, however, should not require a third.

I ordered the Avo on Sourdough & my husband ordered scrambled egg. My husband was disappointed with his portion as well, he was given one slice of toast with his eggs, it would have been great if he got 2 or 3 slices, for the price we were paying. At the end, we went to pay, we were told to pay together. I looked at the receipt when we got home and they had overcharged us. I have tried to contact them about it, but there was no answer. I hope to contact them again & I hope they do answer. I would recommend the food here, but the service can be quite slow, some of the staff are friendly, where others are not & you might get overcharged (make sure to check your receipt before leaving).

Called there today and two large cups of coffee and two scones came to €13.20, each item costing €3.30. We had been aiming for lunch but came a bit too early and so settled for coffee and scones (with butter and jam, no cream). Lunch might have better from the point of view of value as the prices look reasonable. It is quite a small room, seating for maybe 25. Service is fine and friendly. The coffee was excellent and so too was the scone though it was a fair bit smaller than those, of similar quality, served in places such as Nash 19, Greene's and The Hawthorn on the Lough.
