Why is the ground beef , that is covered in this cheesy sauce STILL red ?? At first i though I was trippin cuz ain't no wayyyyy they sold me undone pastellios. I showed a woman & when she called a tall man over he gave a smirk to the woman (didn't even acknowledge me there) & tried to make an excuse for this. They didn't offer me a refund but they offered a food item replacement, I politely declined. Found out other ppl have gotten sick from uncoo food here, other people on FB agree it looks undone. The food at Sabor is very, very good. The flavors are authentic and consistent. The food is hot and portions are spot on. Also respect to them for always having the food station nearly spotless. I pay a lot of attention to if I see dust or food stains when I come to restaurants where they serve you behind the glass- and it's always clean. The staff are efficient, I wish they were a little friendlier, especially since the community really seems to enjoy this place and support it- but they aren't unfriendly- just not particularly warm when you're there. Sometimes if you come in around 5-6 the food isn't at its best, the rice can be a bit hard and they will have run out of things, so maybe ask about it before starting your order. Overall, I'm so glad they're here and that we have a solid place to have authentic Caribbean food. read more

My first trip here, I could smell the food from the street, and it reminded me of being in my Abuela's kitchen. Folks probably thought I was crazy, standing at the entrance with my nose in the air and a giant smile on my face. As wonderful as the smells are, though, it's the delicious food that keeps me coming back again and again. Everything is served cafeteria-style -- when you walk in, you'll see glass cases filled with food on the left and straight ahead. Menu is on the far wall on big screen TVs. It's a lot to take in your first time, and it might actually be easier to pick what you want from looking at what's the cases than on the menus, which are mostly in Spanish. All the classics are here -- mofongo, arroz con gandules, sweet plantains, bacalao, beef and chicken stews, empanadas, rellenos, etc -- as well as desserts (flan coconut rice pudding) and drinks (Malta) when you get closer to the registers. My go-to order is the large meal, and goodness do they pack a LOT of food into that clamshell container -- there's typically enough food stuffed in here for two or even three meals! I get the arroz con gandules, habichuelas guisadas, y pernil (rice with pigeon peas, stewed beans, and pork). The habichuelas, which have pumpkin in them, have the most AMAZING flavor and the pork is juicy and salty perfection. When I'm looking to change things up, I add sweet plantains to the pork (sweet and salty) or get the rotisserie chicken and either the rellenos de papa o de yuca. I haven't tried the empanadas (there's just so many other yummy things on the menu to try!), but the alcapurrias are so, so good. When I'm eating in, I also get the tostones, which are made to order and take about 10 minutes. They come with a small side of traditional mayokechup. If you're a glutton for the stuff, like me, you'll want to ask for two. There are tables, chairs, and a few TVs in the dining area, but space is tight and during the lunch rush, you can't count on finding an open seat. Parking is similarly sparse -- there are three or four open spots directly next to the building, but other than that, it's street parking. The food is totally worth the chance of no parking or no seating, though. I would sit on the curb if I had to and happily enjoy my clamshell of boriquen goodness. read more

Yum yum yum! Do I really have to say more?! I love Latin food and Gran Sabor is definitely fairly priced, good stuff with a good selection! A large can easily feed 2 people or one person several meals. Last time we got 2 regular pulled pork and rice meals and 5 or 6 different empanadas for $25. The pork is anything but dry and the rice is flavorful and plentiful. The empanadas are big and they usual have multiple kinds like: chicken, beef, beef & cheese, pizza, etc. We usually opt for 'to go' but the inside is clean and has plenty of seating and a fair amount of parking. Gets busy at times but they move quickly. I could easily eat Latin food weekly. read more

I asked for a large pork plate (OMG tender juicy pork to die for) & I asked for the black & yellow (saffron?) rice rather than one kind. Some girl in line told me the beef stuffed yucca was good so I got that (two, and they were!), and the server also suggested the beef & cheese empanadas (2) and the rice pudding (1). I also tried the pineapple soda. Everything was truly very good. I got a large styrofoam container & ate maybe 1/3 of the large serving of pork & rice. The set up is a little confusing at first at this cafeteria style Latin American/Puerto Rican restaurant. It's hard to tell how or what to order and the menu is in Spanish with English translations underneath on a screen behind the steam tables. Just to make sure you keep reading, lemme say this up front: the food was absolutely amazing. This is food that aunties and grandmas across the Caribbean put in front of their families. You can taste the soul and the spirit in the food. It was 5-stars, so. freaking. good. It's tucked into a neighborhood at the edge of Lancaster on a street corner where there was actually a good amount of street parking around. At first that concerned me- if there's parking, there's no one inside, right? NOPE. The place was packed and had a steady flow of neighborhood people walking in the whole time was there. When I got my food, there was only one open table for me to sit and eat! The other 9 or 10 tables were full! At lunch. On a Thursday! I had a rice platter with fried pork. There were 3 rice options, I think: white, yellow with pigeon peas and something called Arroz Primavera which was white rice with vegetables and things in it. I opted for the arroz con gandules and they heaped a huge amount into my styrofoam clamshell container. Seriously enough for like 3 people. My fried pork went on the other side of the container and the server dumped a big juicy portion of beans on top. The pork was delicious- crusty and flavorful and very well done. My only tiny complaint was that some of the fattier bits were a little more soft than I usually like my pig skin but it still tasted amazing. I also ordered a small tostones- fried plantains- which came with the typical ketchup and mayo dipping sauce. They were large, made to order (so I had to wait and someone brought them out to me) crispy and piping hot when I dove on them. I could tell these were really fresh based on the color and the texture of the plantain inside the crusty outer portion. They were also flattened fairly thin, which is the way I like them! I think next time I'm going to go with one of the stews or some pernil because it looked excellent in the steam counter. read more

I loved this place since it was a hole in the wall and now with the huge expansion and new building the atmosphere finally lives up to its food! The renovation is expertly done and very inviting. The use of materials are lux but not too high end for the neighborhood. The restaurant is clean with an assortment of buffet style displays featuring common and not so common Puerto Rican cuisine. What could use a little tweaking is the ordering procedure. Nothing has changed since they were a little 2 table restaurant. You walk up to the closed buffet display and order, trying in desperation to see the person you're working with as the glass displays are in the way and the noise level high. Continue to walk to cashier and pay. I really wish they would change this to a true pay per pound buffet to make ordering easier and also allow more variety. The meals consist of a meat, rice, and beans while the other items are al la carte. Most of the al la carte items are not listed on the menu board - labeling the display case could really increase sales, and some of the specialty items like monfongo and pasteles were available but also not listed and given that these are holiday staples in the Hispanic community should be listed prominently. The portion size is huge! If in doubt under order as the meal itself usually feeds me for about 3 meals over 2 days. I will say that's its refreshing to see a small business not only become successful but also legendary as sometimes the line goes outside and wraps around the building. My dad and I visit Lancaster very frequently, but had yet to find any decent hispanic restaurants in the city. Which is a surprise to us especially since the city is known for having a pretty big hispanic population. The restaurant is in a convenient location and it's always super clean when we visit. Make sure to get there early because their popular menu items run out, which is good because that means it's delicious and their food doesn't sit around for too long. My fave item is their empanadas, but I've had their rice, beans, pork, and beef. I would give 5 stars, but I always feel like the food lacks a bit of seasoning. This stems from me being hispanic and growing up with family members that are amazing cooks. Definitely still feel like this place is a great choice be because it's clean, super affordable, the food is tasty and fresh, and the portions are huge! read more

After going several times and trying the bland dry food, we called it quits. In fact, the last time was when we tried the potato balls and learned that the potato balls were made with fake potato flakes. It was horrible.
