To our surprise the waitress brought out a drink said "this is the only size we have" and we drank it. Little did we know, it was full price - $13. Never were we told that the special was out or that they couldn't honor it. So I felt really misled by this. In fact, as we left the same sign was out front. The food was good tho. I had barria tacos and they were good. The service was spotty. Other than feeling misled, our drinks came out at random times and our food was delivered oddly too. The restaurant was not super busy and the waitress didn't have too many tables, so it was just odd to me. I asked for take out utensils, as we were in a local hotel and had to remind the server twice for them. Will we be back? Probably not.

Our server barely understood English, and even simple questions turned into a whole situation. I asked FOUR separate times whether the spicy salsa was free. I literally said, "If it's free, I'll take it. If not, never mind." The server kept saying yes, it was free... so we ate it. Then the check comes out with a $3.99 charge for the salsa When I asked why it was charged after being told multiple times it was free, the server still kept saying "free" while staring at the receipt. At that point I had to ask for the manager because we were clearly not communicating. The manager said there was a "language barrier issue," BUT because we already ate it, we still had to pay for it. That part honestly blew my mind. If I asked about the price four times before ordering, clearly the whole point was that I didn't want it if it cost extra What made it worse was the attitude. The server never apologized once and the manager acted super confident like this was somehow normal. And honestly... the food wasn't even worth the drama. Everything was ridiculously salty, and the salsa tasted like someone mixed it with water. Cool interior. Terrible experience. Definitely not coming back.

When we walked in we could smell the food, it smelled like fresh Mexican food. We ordered three chicken tamales for appetizer and they were okay, a little bit dry. For entrees we order chimichangas, one chicken and one beef, and street tacos al pastor. Every single thing was delicious. The refried beans and cheese that came with the chimichangas were SO GOOD! The tacos al pastor came with yellow rice, beans, and pico de gallo - the carne al pastor was very good and the pico de gallo was FRESH! We had a Pacifico and a Modelo to go with the food Our server, Lupita, was very friendly. The prices were affordable. The ambiance was very Mexican, the colors, the lamps, the cacti, Chichen Itza murals on the walls...Love it!

This Papi's looks good, but tastes only "ok"…read more We were tired on a Sunday early-evening, (Jun 2026), and the staff of the Big Papi's location in Hagerstown seemed unmotivated, maybe worn out from towards the end of their day. We got a birria taco, a rockfish taco, a vegetarian burrito, and a guacamole. The fresh-made guac was quite good! Creamy, fresh, and generous. The Birria taco was good. Flavorful and tender and generous. But inexplicably they did not include a side of consommé sauce for dipping. Lots-of-sauce is a key part of a messy juicy birria taco. That would have just been a disappointment. But the fried rockfish taco, meh. It tasted fresh, but it tasted like something had burned in the oil. The fish seemed too chewy, overdone. The coating was overly-hard. The bean and rice burrito was also meh. The dull rice seemed too chewy, either overdone or cooked until it was too dry. And there were only a small amount of black beans, and no added veggies, so there was little flavor. Overall, we were disappointed in the Big Papi's location in Hagerstown. For over $35, we only liked $8 of the food. What was good, was very good. Maybe they were just having a bad evening. We might try Big Papi's again, but probably not this location.
