You know what you're getting when you buy a typewriter here versus Ebay or Etsy. You get to try it out and if you have any questions they will be answered. I upgraded from a 1940s Remington Rand to a perfectly restored 1936 Royal Model-O. It's not cheap to get a vintage typewriter in perfect condition but it costs the same as buying one online and then having to pay to get it restored. Gramercy Typewriter is the best way to go. If you read through these reviews you get a sense for what your experience will be regardless if you are buying a vintage typewriter or having one repaired. My 15 year old daughter who is an aspiring writer begged me for a typewriter and I couldn't figure out why she would prefer to use one instead of the MacBook we got her for Christmas. She did a lot of research and found an antique shop in Rhode Island that we were going to pass in an upcoming weekend and she also found Gramercy. I was trying to lead her down the antique route because I thought it would be cheaper. We visited the antique shop in RI and they had about 5 or 6 older looking typewriters- but I immediately realized I didn't know what to look for. So while we were there I called Gramercy to see if they had any words of wisdom. Understand- I was not a customer in any way. Jay spoke to me about what I was looking at based on my descriptions. He did not tell me what to do and said he would be happy to give me an estimate to refurbish whatever I bought. His initial estimate was at least 150 to 250 depending on what it needed and could be higher or he would tell me it is not worth fixing. After I hung up with Jay we decided to visit Gramercy before we spend $100 on something that can't be repaired. The following weekend we were able to get to Manhattan. Jay was a pleasure to work with in person as well. They had a large (20-30) selection of vintage fully reconditioned typewriters in perfect working order. After a very short time we narrowed our search to a couple of older Royals. We ended up purchasing a 1941 Royal Quiet Deluxe portable in black or a very dark grey. It looks brand new and functions that way as well. Jay sat with my daughter and took the time to explain all the buttons and switches with her. While we were there Jay also took the time to explain what some of the other models were as these were the same as we had looked at the week before in the antique shop. He even went through a checklist for me of what to look for when buying a vintage typewriter. What a fabulous experience. This is truly a gem of a spot in the greatest city. People like Jay are hard to find in today's retail world. We were truly transported back to the prewar era in what we purchased and his whole shop. read more

I can not say enough POSITIVE and WONDERFUL things about this store, this gentleman and this craftsman. He's an artist! This is place is a New York GEM and an incredible rare place of craftsmanship. I'm a producer and actor and I had a very old typewriter that I used in my first Off Broadway show of True West by Sam Shepard back in 2005. Long story short, it was an old type writer that I purchased back in 2005 and it was built in 1937. I think I spent $100 back then, which was a lot of money for me as a young actor. Anyhow the typewriter is very dear to me and it got ruined because of the storm Sandy. I took it to this man and he absolutely polished it and made it brand new. I took my 1920's Royal here for a full refurbishment and I'm so glad I did. These guys are great and really are a taste of old time, good customer service. They're personable, they called when they said they would, and the work took exactly as long as they said it would. When I picked it up the younger guy talked me through everything they'd done and even showed me a few things I didn't know how to do. If you know nothing about your typewriter then he'll gladly teach you everything. My only complaint is that I had to take it back shortly after for a small adjustment. These things happen with stuff like this so I don't think it was a big deal. They sell lots of typewriters too. Some beautiful looking old machines which are worth a look even if you have no plans to buy. Overall then I can certainly recommend this business. read more

If there were a way to give these folks a sixth star, I absolutely would. I brought in a typewriter I bought on Etsy that just wouldn't work. I called up the store and just based on the conversation, they were able to tell me the main problem with the typewriter. They fixed it quickly, but unfortunately that revealed some deeper problems with the machine that were likely caused by damage in shipping. What I appreciate most is that Jay kept me fully informed of his progress with the repairs and always let me decide how to proceed once given all the information. They take real pride in their work and won't take your money or send a product out the door until they're absolutely certain they can stand by their work. They're also just genuinely nice people who are enthusiastic about typewriters, and are truly a pleasure to chat with. He let me test drive three different typwriters, and although it's been many years since I've had my hands on one, once I had that beautiful typewriter with that lovely cursive font typing the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy brown dog, I knew I had found my bestest, most favoritest kind of word processor... They're not helpful and friendly because they want to upsell you, or because they're feigning it, they're genuinely helpful and friendly. I took in a printer to get serviced and they checked it out for free. The printer wasn't salvageable (which confirmed my suspicions, I work in tech and troubleshooted it myself also). They didn't even want me to come pick it up, they were going to dispose of it for me. If and when I buy I another printer, i'll be sure to purchase their (discounted!) toner. read more

I would like to give this store the highest of my esteem,for this establishment exceeded my expectations. I first went in a month ago. Cassy in the front greeted me and we talked about typewriters for 10 minutes. This inspired me to bring my typewriter from home, to let them take a look at it. The owner, Jay, said it was in great condition and told me that it didn't need a clean up. That right there is integrity. He had also found a case for the typewriter. I had been looking for 7 years. On top of that Cassy gave me the original manual while Jay fixed a part of the machine that has never worked while I have owned it. I just bought a Royal Quiet Deluxe typewriter off eBay and needed the ribbon fixed, quiet inexpensive at $10 and got the machine cleaned for $20. This place is pretty old school and the walls are line with old typewriters that others sold back. I took my Royal Safari typewriter to them a couple of weeks ago. I've had it for 40 years and used it off and on throughout that time. Over time, the typewriter became caked with dust and gunk, the keys were sticking together and the letters were not coming out right. The repairman at Gramercy cleaned and oiled it from top to bottom and it now works as good as the day I got it. They also got done with it ahead of schedule and charged a fair price for the work. read more

I hate to give a bad review of Gramercy, as a business that has been repairing typewriters for as long as Gramercy has and manages to still be there in our computer digital age is generally to be commended. That said, if anything my machine, a Corona Silent was not better after having it "repaired" and arguable was worse off - decals further worn off, to which one of the store technicians, Andrew, told me he found machines looked better that way. Seriously? This is the response to a customer after you've rubbed off antique decals that can't be replaced? Is that how a typewriter is restored? Then while I had a new platen put in, the machine is worse off than when I originally brought it in: grinding sound on occasion when returning the carriage and carriage skipping a few spaces when typing, neither of which was fixed. When I brought in the typewriter the skipping might've been attributed to individual typing - but not after I got it back. Was that worth $300? I don't think so and what was a joy to type on is utter frustration. Sad and disappointing for both my typewriter and for Gramercy as I feel they really dropped the ball here. read more
